Biographical history

Edward Arthur Beder (1895-1978), political activist and author, was born in London, England in 1895 and subsequently emigrated to Canada where he established himself in business. In 1932, he became involved with the founders of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF), at a time when he was writing for the 'Canadian forum'. He served as chairman of the Organization Committee for Ontario, organized the CCF Club in Toronto and other parts of the province and served as Vice-President of the first Ontario Provincial Council of the CCF. Beder also served as Secretary of the Canadian League Against War and Fascism and was Secretary of the Socialist Party of Canada (Ontario Section). Beder also lectured for the Workers' Education Alliance.

S 1: Manuscripts, 1921-1970. Consists of several subseries:
S 1A. Political and economic works. Contains typescripts, many with revisions and corrections in pencil, including 'Economic consequences of price fixing,' (1942) which was submitted as a thesis to the New School of Social Research, 'The missing political party,' which was published in 1972, and other unpublished titles
S 1B. Novels. Contains handwritten and typescript of unpublished titles, including 'No heroes at all,' and 'Full rhyme and reason,'.
S 1C. Plays. Includes 'Greatest playwright in the world,' and 'It happens every day,'.
S 1D. Teleplays. Includes several from 1962.
S 1E. Poetry, contains notes and drafts of poems, written over the period, 1923-1967.
S 1F. Short stories. Contains typescripts with corrections for a dozen short stories written between 1921-1970.
S 1G. Character sketches, drafts.
S 1H. Book reviews. Includes over thirty drafts of reviews written in the period, 1943-1947, as well as newsclippings and notes for reviews.
S 1I. Articles. Includes drafts and galley proofs for six articles published in the 'Canadian forum,' (1938-1946), as well as over one hundred drafts of unpublished articles on economic and political topics, 1930-1972.

S 2. Correspondence, 1923-1972. Contains Beder's correspondence with political allies, literary publishers and other writers, and extensive 'letters to the editor,'.

S 3. Membership lists. Contains an undated set of membership lists for unidentified groups.

S 4. Socialist Party of Canada, undated. Contains a 'Statement of principles of the Social Party of Canada'.

S 5. League for Social Reconstruction, 1933. Contains membership lists, manifesto, bibliography and a copy of the League's brief to the Royal Commission on Dominion-Provincial Relations (Rowell-Sirois).

S 6. Canadian League Against War and Fascism, 1934-1937. Contains notes and typescripts of articles and reports for the League, handbills and announcements, as well as printed copies of minutes of the National Bureau, 1935-1937.

S 7. Project outlines, 1935-1936. Includes material on an election campaign in the Toronto riding of Davenport, 1935 (federal), and plans for the establishment of a newspaper, 1936.

S 8. Lecture notes and abstracts, 1934-1965. Contains lecture notes taken by Beder at the New School for Social Research, abstracts from the IRI Regional Planning Conference in 1934, notes for a series of lectures on Marx, and notes for the International Teach-In in 1965.

S 9. Notes, 1935-1946. Contains notes for speeches, and notes on an African trip taken in 1939.

S 10. Printed material, 1930-1972. Contains CCF literature (pamphlets, manifestos, reports), material from the New Democratic Party and its Waffle wing as well as several government publications.

S 11. Newspaper clippings, 1921-1972. Contains clippings ordered into broad subjects, including general economic and social issues, the Spanish Revolution and Russia, World War II, international relations, and political topics (including the CCF, League for Social Reconstruction, etc).
