      <note>
        <p>Earle James Beattie, journalist, teacher and author, was born in 1916. He was a professor in the Social Science Department at Atkinson College. He played an important role in establishing the journalism school at Ryerson Polytechnical Institute in Toronto and taught at University of Western Ontario in London, Ont. He wrote many articles in Maclean's and Chatelaine, and published Canada's Billion Dollar Pension Scandal (1985). He died in 1992.</p>
