“Far Cry” (Requited) : 1st assembly

File consists of a draft of York’s novel “Far cry” in assembly form. The assembly is created by cutting out and taping typescript scenes together to form long scrolls of writing. The assembly has been flattened to facilitate access but some pieces of paper have become detached from their original position within the text. The title “Requited” was used on drafts before publication.

Among the earlier writings represented in this series can be found copies of essays, articles and plays written by Sherman during his years in the Creative Writing Program at York University as well as typescript copies and clippings of several of his articles and reviews which have appeared in The Globe and Mail, The Toronto Star, Books in Canada and other publications.

It includes articles on Downs View, the home of John Perkins Bull, which was the namesake of the Downsview area. Information on other historical landmarks such as the George Jackson House, Elia Church, Elia Post Office, Downsview United Church, Rowntree Farm (later the Oakdale Golf and Country Club), Downsview Airforce Base, Beth Am Synagogue, Boakes Grove and Downsview Park are also included in this research file.

Studies in the Research Relationship between York University and the Jane-Finch Neighbourhood

File consists of research papers, university blog posts and press statements that examine the relationship and partnership between York University and residents of the Jane and Finch neighbourhood. It includes the blog posts "Jane-Finch youth building bridges to university with 'transformative site' art installation at York U" (September 10, 2001), "Students from Jane/Finch high schools complete university courses" (January 20, 2016), and "York U unveils spectacular Inuit soccer player sculpture" (June 24, 2016). It includes York University's School of Social Work press release titled "Statement in condemnation of racist political speech: Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti's recent attack on Jane and Finch community members" (September 27, 2018). The fonds consists of records that document Mistry's career as a writer, including financial records, personal and professional correspondence, publicity files, first editions and translations of his published works, notes, drafts and galleys of his short stories, travel essays and novels, including "Tales from Firozsha Baag," "Such a Long Journey," "A Fine Balance," and "Family Matters." It also includes records documenting his work with his literary agent and publishers, his selection to the Oprah Book Club, the burning and banning of "Such a Long Journey" at the University of Mumbai in September 2010, Mistry's involvement with literary festivals and awards, his investiture into the Order of Canada, and his support of organizations devoted to literacy, humanitarianism, and writers.

Collection contains digital and analogue home movies submitted to and digitized by Home Made Visible, a nation-wide project by the Regent Park Film Festival. The project collected movies from visible minority families and Indigenous peoples in Canada. Footage consists of everyday life including children playing and family trips, and celebrations including birthdays and holidays.
