File also includes correspondence with Grace MacInnis, Member of Parliament for Vancouver-Kingsway, who put forward Bill C-165 in the House of Commons for abortion law reform in 1970. MacInnis provided the Women’s Liberation Group with details on the bill, the House of Commons debate report from the 3rd Session of the 28th Parliament (September 1971), excerpts of Commons Debates that included the previous Bill C-55 and earlier mentions of Bill C-165, and other responses where she voiced her support for the group’s efforts to take action on the issue of abortion. File also includes correspondence and newspaper clippings related to the Manitoba Minister of Transportation and Public Works Joe Borowski’s opposition to the Mount Carmel Clinic’s abortion services in Winnipeg. File also includes Prepas’ essay ‘Women in the Labour Force” and the lyrics to the song “The Women’s Fight,” which accompanies the agenda for the founding meeting of the North Metro Waffle Women’s Liberation Group on November 25, 1971.

Central issues for the North Metro Waffle in 1973 included the Government of Canada’s plans for Arctic Resource Development, which included plans to build the Mackenzie Valley pipeline,the international monetary crisis, inflation, and strikes at Artistic Woodwork in Toronto, Ontario and Dare Food factories in Kitchener, Ontario. Prepas was part of the Waffle Arctic Research Group and presented her findings alongside Pat Deutscher in an article titled ‘Issues surrounding Arctic Resource Development.’ Other Toronto Metro Waffle groups also joined efforts to halt the construction of the Mackenzie Valley Pipeline, as indicated by letters distributed to North Metro Waffle and East Metro Waffle. File also includes York Waffle invitations to study sessions and workshops.

After the ONDP’s decision in 1972 to expel the Waffle from the party, members of the Waffle who still held NDP party membership were called upon to attend the London Conference organized by the Waffle Movement to submit deciding votes for the Waffle’s next steps, which included five options: one, dissolution; two, retain member status within the ONDP by adopting the Riverdale Resolution; three, cease to be a political party, but carry on political work for an Independent Socialist Canada outside of the ONDP; four, set up a new political party; and five, continue the Waffle’s functions unchanged and challenge the party expulsions at the next provincial NDP convention. File also includes notes on forming candidacies at the federal level around Waffle members who held NDP membership, which included Prepas. File also includes ‘The Waffle Manifesto,’ Prepas’ ONDP membership card for 1971, and a letter from Barry Weisleder addressed to all members of the North Metro Toronto NDP-Waffle Steering Committee regarding his objections to the arrangement of allowing only four panelists with near-uniform opinions on the Waffle’s options to speak in a conference where a decisive vote was to take place.

It includes articles on Prepas’ nomination as the New Democratic Party Candiate for Trinity Riding and articles on other NDP candidates, the fringe party Action Canada, other political parties and issues important to that year’s elections, which included the auto industry, bilingualism and Canada’s place on the world stage. The clippings also include Prepas’ letter to the editor of the Toronto Star, titled ‘Elections are near – and Ottawa has rediscovered its senior citizens.’ File also includes a letter and envelope from Ben Sugarman, a disabled war veteran who operated a newspaper clipping service from his home, regarding donations to assist in his continued work.

A majority of contacts included electors from the Trinity Riding, with a small number of contacts from the Dovercourt riding and the academic community within the Faculty of Environmental Studies at York University. File also includes a letter to Waffle membership regarding canvassing in St. Andrew-St. Patrick (for candidate Dan Heap) and Dovercourt (for Steve Penner) and accompanying contact information for Penner’s campaign and other ridings with NDP candiates, such as Downsview and Sheppard-Bayview.

The Energy Crisis of 1973, also known as the 1973 Oil Crisis, was an embargo on oil placed by the member nations of the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC) on nations that supported Israel during the Yom Kippur War, which included Canada. File also includes a newsletter regarding a resources rally co-hosted by the York, North Metro and East Metro Waffle groups to support Waffle events relating to the Energy Crisis.

Norma Taylor, the Saskatchewan coordinator of the Kraft Boycott summarizes the company’s impact that the large American company has had on the Canadian dairy industry and the lack of support that government commissions provided to Canadian farmers.

File consists of two copies of a discussion brief titled ‘Quebec and Education’ and the article ‘Nationalism and the Canadian University’ from the Canuck newspaper volume 1, issue number 1 published by the National Canadianization Committee. The discussion brief calls for individuals to join the National Canadianization committee in urging the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) to add the issues of Quebec sovereignty and Canadian material into the curriculum, in addition to addressing unemployment, United States imperialism and publishing issues in Canada to the AUCC’s agenda at their next meeting. The Canuck article describes the rise of a new Nationalist movement in Canadian universities and the driving forces of the movement, which include unemployment, competition from American and foreign students and graduates and a lack of support from Canadian government bodies.

It also includes a report presented by Dennis McDermott, Vice-President and Director for the Canadian branch of the UAW to the UAW council, in which he describes the state of the Canadian auto and aeronautics industry in the 7 years since the Auto Pact and criticizes the Waffle group’s stance on nationalizing the auto industry and the Waffle group’s call for workers to seize control of plants that have been shut down, citing the lack of direction from the group after calling for socialist revolution. File also includes Michael Gurstein’s report on the ‘Canadian Auto-parts and Automotive Industry,’ prepared for the York Reseaerch Group. Gurstein’s report includes backgrounding information regarding the auto industry from its founding in the early 1900s to the signing of the pact in 1965 and what the Auto Pact means in the present and for the future of the industry and Canada’s economy. Gurstein’s finidngs are based on data from government publications, statistics and industry publications, which can be found in the appendix of his report.

A backgrounding document composed by the Canadian Textile and Chemical Union explains that the Texpack strike in Brantford, Ontario was organized to demand higher pay for its workers (most of whom were women), to oppose the layoff decision undertaken by the company after its acquisition by the American Hospital Supply Corporation, and the unethical sale of Second World War-era United States Army bandages, which could not be verified to be sterile, onto the Canadian market with an intention to be used by industrial workers. The backgrounding document also argues that the root cause of Texpack’s situation was the acquisition of Canadian factories by American corporations, which operated the factories as branch plants to the detriment of Canadian workers when corporate cut backs were deemed necessary. File includes a Waffle press release indicating the movement’s support and attendance at the Texpack strike. File also includes two notices of a public conference to be held regarding the Texpack strike and three copies of the Canadian Textile & Chemical Union Bulletin’s October 1971 Texpack Strike Issue. File also includes a large sticker with the words ‘I Don’t Buy Dare Cookies!’ in reference to one of the major food manufacturers where another largely female workforce also decided to go on strike, influenced by the impact of the Texpack strike and a booklet of blank Ontario Waffle donation cheques.

This committee focused on two central issues: the Mackenzie Valley Pipeline and the regional manufacturing economies within Ontario. The Resource and De-industrialization committee was tasked with stimulating the creation of localized campaign committees by each member’s local Waffle group. It conducted research on both the proposed pipeline’s environmental and indigenous traditional territory impacts and the working conditions within Eastern Ontario factories. Minutes from an emergency meeting of the Ottawa Waffle indicate that there was disagreement in how much money was to be raised and spent for Toronto rallies against the Mackenzie Valley Pipeline (a resources issue), the hiring of an organizer for the rallies and the lack of attention being given to issues of de-industrialization issues in Ontario. File also includes Prepas’ letter indicating her resignation from the Resources and De-industrialization committee in March 1973. File also includes a press release featuring the heading ‘Songs and speeches to deal with resources and jobs at Waffle meeting Tuesday night’ (April 19, 1973). File also includes a poster and event schedule for the ‘Waffle South-Western Ontario Campaign ‘73.’

File includes statements made by the Ontario Waffle regarding the United States’ tariff on Canadian tires in 1973 and newspaper clippings of a public letter from Maxwell W. Ward, President of Wardair Canada Limited regarding a strike within the airline and an article on Ford Motor Company’s move to Brazil for manufacturing. File also includes ‘Ontario Waffle Resolutions’ reached after the Ontario Waffle Provincial Council Meeting between March 31st and April 1st, 1973 with the booklet signed by James Bay. File also includes Graham L Kay’s resignation from the Waffle movement in 1973, an article written about Karleton Armstrong, council minutes, resolutions and labour policy passed by the Ontario Waffle at the movement’s council meeting between July 14 and 15, 1973.

File also includes a proposal to form a Provincial Publicity Committee to consolidate publicity efforts across all groups within Ontario, two annotated bibliographies with books recommended by John D. Smart and Barry G.T. Mills to explain the core tenets of the Waffle, and guidelines for the establishment of the Ontario Waffle newspaper. A letter received from Smart includes a request for Prepas to write about the Mackenzie Valley pipeline. File also includes Prepas’ Waffle Movement membership card for 1973, which features the ‘Waffle Manifesto’ on the back of the card.

File consists of the Ontario Waffle Movement’s 1972 meeting minutes, membership reports, financial reports, memos, newsletters, notes, event schedules, correspondence, suggested reading lists, forms for membership application, calendars, and transmittals, information booklets, membership processing procedures, a draft organizational policy, and a list of instructions for political canvassers. John D. Smart, a co-founder of the Waffle movement, is the primary author of letters received by Prepas. The letters discuss updates and plans for Waffle groups across Canada, the state of the NDP party at the provincial and federal level, and Smart’s administrative duties.

File includes letters to supporters to renew their Waffle membership, event information sheets for Waffle workshops focused on ‘Building the Waffle,’ and a description of the committees within the Ontario Waffle. File includes the newsletter Waffle News, PRO TEM issue number 3 with ‘An interview with James Laxer’(1972) and the O. A. P. O. Newsletter with a press release on the throne speech and guaranteed adequate income (G.A.I.). It also includes memos and activity updates from the Kingston Waffle and Ottawa Waffle and other Waffle groups across Ontario, alongside agendas for Waffle conferences in London, Ontario. It also includes the Waffle’s 1972 Federal Election coverage and Waffle co-founder John Smart’s perspective of the Waffle Council Meeting in 1972. It also includes a press release regarding the resignations of Bruce Kidd, James Laxer and Krista Maeots of Toronto and John Smart (Ottawa Centre) from their positions on the executive of the Ontario New Democratic Party and a statement on the Waffle’s own political campaign during the 1972 federal election, where the group decided not to run a candidate, but instead campaign to highlight issues and areas of the country the Liberals, Conservatives and NDP ignored in their platforms.
