It includes the books “Law and the Woman in Ontario” (1971) by the Ontario Women’s Bureau of the Department of Labour; “Working Women in Ontario” (c. 1971) by Katherine Eastham for the Ontario Department of Labour; “Women in Canada: –in Society – in Public Life – in the NDP” (c. 1970s) and “women in the labour force: 1970 facts and figures” (1971) by the Women’s Bureau, Canada Department of Labour. These books explore the changing landscape of the Canadian workforce and society as more women sought employment and equal pay for equal work. The book “Women in Canada: –in Society – in Public Life – in the NDP” in particular, is presented as a call to action for women to become more active in Canadian politics and government.

File also includes papers and correspondence relating to a series of Waffle Women’s Conferences held across Southern Ontario, which covered socialist strategies to organize women in the workplace to fight for equal pay for equal work, how to canvas and win elections in major Canadian ridings, and Rozzi Doctorow and Diane Mossman’s Waffle conference paper ‘A Socalist Strategy for Women’s Liberation.’ One letter by Julie Bass, Susan Kent and Ellie Prepas describes a rift between the three women and Donna McCoombs and Roz Doctorow, two of the organizers for the St. Catherines, Ontario conference. File also includes includes the ‘Submission by the Canadian Labour Congress to the Royal Commission on the Status of Women’ (1968) and Waffle Women’s responses to the Commission’s findings.

Waffle Women's Group

File consists of the Waffle Women’s Group’s notes, newspaper clippings, photocopied chapters of socialist and feminist texts, recommended reading lists and correspondence. It includes photocopies of Robert H. McNeal’s article ‘Women in the Russian Radical Movement’ in the Journal of Social History, volume 5 (1971); Muriel Schien and Carol Lopate’s article ‘On Engels and the Liberation of Women’ in Liberation volume 16, no. 9 (1972); and Eleanor Burke Leacock’s ‘Introduction to Engels “Family.”’ File also includes letters from the Office of the Prime Minister (Pierre Elliot Trudeau), the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada (John N. Turner), and the Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources (J. J. Greene), whose assistants and deputies answered Prepas’ letters regarding the issue of abortion in the Criminal Code of Canada. File also includes a statement from the Ontario Women’s Abortion Law Repeal Coalition regarding the actions that had already been taken (up to 1971) to change the Criminal Code on abortion and called for more women and organizations to join the coalition.

Toronto Waffle Women's Group

File consists of meeting agendas and conference schedules organized by the Toronto Waffle Women’s Group. File includes three copies of the position paper ‘Appendage or Essential Part of the Waffle Movement for an Independent Socialist Canada,’ where members of the Toronto Waffle Women’s Group conducted a self-examination of the issues within their group, its effectiveness and its place within the Waffle Movement. One copy of this paper includes the handwritten words ‘alienation function group participation.’ File also includes the itinerary and invitation to attend the 1973 Canadian dates of an international festival of films made by women titled ‘Women & Film.’

North Metro Waffle Women's Liberation Group

File consists of meeting minutes, correspondence, action proposals, event notices, notes, contact information, invoices and receipts, memos, and newspaper clippings related to the North Metro Waffle Women’s Liberation Group’s causes of changing abortion laws and equal pay for equal work. File also includes correspondence with Grace MacInnis, Member of Parliament for Vancouver-Kingsway, who put forward Bill C-165 in the House of Commons for abortion law reform in 1970. MacInnis provided the Women’s Liberation Group with details on the bill, the House of Commons debate report from the 3rd Session of the 28th Parliament (September 1971), excerpts of Commons Debates that included the previous Bill C-55 and earlier mentions of Bill C-165, and other responses where she voiced her support for the group’s efforts to take action on the issue of abortion. File also includes correspondence and newspaper clippings related to the Manitoba Minister of Transportation and Public Works Joe Borowski’s opposition to the Mount Carmel Clinic’s abortion services in Winnipeg. File also includes Prepas’ essay ‘Women in the Labour Force” and the lyrics to the song “The Women’s Fight,” which accompanies the agenda for the founding meeting of the North Metro Waffle Women’s Liberation Group on November 25, 1971.

Toronto Metro Waffles - North Metro, York Metro and East Metro, 1973

File consists of meeting agendas, minutes, event flyers, newsletters, research papers, reports, newspaper clippings correspondence, and member’s lists related to the North Metro Waffle, York Waffle and East Waffle. Central issues for the North Metro Waffle in 1973 included the Government of Canada’s plans for Arctic Resource Development, which included plans to build the Mackenzie Valley pipeline,the international monetary crisis, inflation, and strikes at Artistic Woodwork in Toronto, Ontario and Dare Food factories in Kitchener, Ontario. Prepas was part of the Waffle Arctic Research Group and presented her findings alongside Pat Deutscher in an article titled ‘Issues surrounding Arctic Resource Development.’ Other Toronto Metro Waffle groups also joined efforts to halt the construction of the Mackenzie Valley Pipeline, as indicated by letters distributed to North Metro Waffle and East Metro Waffle. File also includes York Waffle invitations to study sessions and workshops.

North Metro Waffle, 1971-1972

File consists of meeting minutes, contact information of North Metro Waffle members, press statements regarding strike actions, posters in support for Texpack workers, forms for joining protests, position papers, newspaper clippings, event information sheets, and correspondence. Position papers include the following written by John Smart: ‘Waffle and anti-Waffle: Two Election Strategies for the NDP in Ontario’ (1971), ‘The Waffle, the federal election and Ottawa South’ (1971); the following written by Hans Modlich: ‘Whichway for Waffle?’ (c. 1971); the following by Mary Ann Code, Robin Endres, Larry Hoffman, Rose-Marie Larsson, Marjaleena Repo, Satu Repo and Gary Teeple: ‘The Waffle, the NDP, and the Independent Socialists in the Waffle’ (c. 1971); the following by Ed Bazylinski, Kelly Crichton, Gord Laxer, Dominique Pagnini, Jack Quarter, Dan Sunstrum, Sandra Principe, Bill Temple, and Mel Watkins: ‘A Strategy for the Waffle’ (c. 1971); the following by Dawn Aspinall, Len Choptiany, Danny Drache, John Lang and Neil Keller: ‘The Waffle and the NDP: Disappearing from Within’ (c. 1971); the following by Lukin Robinson and Richard Comber: ‘Statement on the Relationship between the Waffle Group and the NDP’ (c. 1971); the following by Krista Maeots: ‘A Socialist Strategy for the Waffle’ (c. 1971); the following by Jackie Larkin and Steve Penner: ‘Some Further Thoughts, Or Let a Hundred Flowers Bloom!’ (c. 1971); and the following by Ellie Prepas and Naomi Lyons: ‘Organization in the Toronto Waffle and the North Metro Experience’ (c. 1971). Meeting minutes and press releases in this file point to a crisis between the Ontario New Democratic Party (ONDP) and the Waffle Movement, with the former calling for the latter’s expulsion from the ONDP caucus. After the ONDP’s decision in 1972 to expel the Waffle from the party, members of the Waffle who still held NDP party membership were called upon to attend the London Conference organized by the Waffle Movement to submit deciding votes for the Waffle’s next steps, which included five options: one, dissolution; two, retain member status within the ONDP by adopting the Riverdale Resolution; three, cease to be a political party, but carry on political work for an Independent Socialist Canada outside of the ONDP; four, set up a new political party; and five, continue the Waffle’s functions unchanged and challenge the party expulsions at the next provincial NDP convention. File also includes notes on forming candidacies at the federal level around Waffle members who held NDP membership, which included Prepas. File also includes ‘The Waffle Manifesto,’ Prepas’ ONDP membership card for 1971, and a letter from Barry Weisleder addressed to all members of the North Metro Toronto NDP-Waffle Steering Committee regarding his objections to the arrangement of allowing only four panelists with near-uniform opinions on the Waffle’s options to speak in a conference where a decisive vote was to take place.

Trinity Riding - Newspaper Clippings

File consists of newspaper clippings and correspondence related to the 1972 Canadian Federal Election. It includes articles on Prepas’ nomination as the New Democratic Party Candiate for Trinity Riding and articles on other NDP candidates, the fringe party Action Canada, other political parties and issues important to that year’s elections, which included the auto industry, bilingualism and Canada’s place on the world stage. The clippings also include Prepas’ letter to the editor of the Toronto Star, titled ‘Elections are near – and Ottawa has rediscovered its senior citizens.’ File also includes a letter and envelope from Ben Sugarman, a disabled war veteran who operated a newspaper clipping service from his home, regarding donations to assist in his continued work.

Trinity Riding - Contact Information

File consists of contact information, correspondence and New Democratic Party membership slips from Prepas’ 1972 campaign for the Trinity Federal Riding. A majority of contacts included electors from the Trinity Riding, with a small number of contacts from the Dovercourt riding and the academic community within the Faculty of Environmental Studies at York University. File also includes a letter to Waffle membership regarding canvassing in St. Andrew-St. Patrick (for candidate Dan Heap) and Dovercourt (for Steve Penner) and accompanying contact information for Penner’s campaign and other ridings with NDP candiates, such as Downsview and Sheppard-Bayview.

Trinity Riding – Finances, Meetings, Strategy, Correspondence

File consists of contact information, correspondence, financial statements, press releases and meeting minutes. File also includes blank forms from Prepas’ participation in the Trinity Riding Public Forum. File also includes Prepas’ notes on canvassing in her riding and communications with the Ontario New Democratic Party (ONDP). A booklet containing the crest of the University of Waterloo includes Prepas’ handwritten notes on the Trinity Riding’s voter concerns and contact information for meeting and calling potential voters. Donation slips for Prepas’ campaign and addresses of potential donors is also included in the file.

Trinity Riding - Literature, pre-nomination expenses, notices sent out

File consists of election campaign ephemera, instructions for election canvassers in the Trinity federal riding in the pre-nomination stage, an information sheet explaining Prepas’ platform, written in Italian, a voters list from a previous Ontario provincial election, Prepas’ winning nomination within the New Democratic Party (NDP) for the Trinity riding candidacy, Prepas’ personal statements to Trinity voters regarding election issues. File also includes financial calculations and invoices for campaign materials at the pre-nomination stage, in addition to drafts of information sheets and statements eventually distributed by Prepas’ canvassers.

File consists of newspaper clippings, public statements, and handwritten research notes regarding election issues, strategy and the platforms of other federal political parties. It includes a letter to NDP members regarding Mel Watkins (Parkdale riding, Toronto) and John Smart (Ottawa Centre)’s respective nominations for candidacy in the New Democratic Party (NDP) in the 1972 Canadian Federal Election; a statement regarding the construction of the Spadina subway station; a statement from the Public Service Alliance of Canada regarding the introduction and processes involved in bringing bilingualism into the public service of Canada, a Saturday Night magazine article regarding the firearms industry in Canada and Canada’s relationship with the United States military and Prepas’ research notes on unemployment and housing, issues that were important to her campaign in Trinity riding. File also includes a large map showing the boundaries of the Trinity federal riding.

Advance for Independence and Socialism Vol. 1, nos. 1-3

File consists of the Ontario Waffle’s internal discussion journal, Advance for Independence and Socialism, volume 1, issue numbers 1 to 3. The first issue provides an editorial introduction and two discussion papers by Bela Egyed and Jim Laxer. The second and third issues expand on social issues and socialism in Ontario, while also discussing party issues within the Ontario Waffle. File also includes one copy of ‘A Letter of Resignation to All Ontario Wafflers’ written by members of the West Metro Waffle and two draft copies of the discussion paper ‘Reply to West Metro “Letter of Resignation”’ by Lake, Hull, Wells and Van Eenooghe. The latter paper was featured in Advance Volume 1, number 3.

Energy Crisis

File consists of newspaper clippings, pamphlets, press releases and meeting summaries related to the Energy Crisis of 1973, a Waffle project jointly addressed by the Ontario Waffle and the Saskatchewan Waffle. The Energy Crisis of 1973, also known as the 1973 Oil Crisis, was an embargo on oil placed by the member nations of the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC) on nations that supported Israel during the Yom Kippur War, which included Canada. File also includes a newsletter regarding a resources rally co-hosted by the York, North Metro and East Metro Waffle groups to support Waffle events relating to the Energy Crisis.

Kraft Boycott

File consists of a press release with a call for action for a boycott of Kraft Foods (Kraftco) in 1972. Norma Taylor, the Saskatchewan coordinator of the Kraft Boycott summarizes the company’s impact that the large American company has had on the Canadian dairy industry and the lack of support that government commissions provided to Canadian farmers.

Canadian Universities

File consists of two copies of a discussion brief titled ‘Quebec and Education’ and the article ‘Nationalism and the Canadian University’ from the Canuck newspaper volume 1, issue number 1 published by the National Canadianization Committee. The discussion brief calls for individuals to join the National Canadianization committee in urging the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) to add the issues of Quebec sovereignty and Canadian material into the curriculum, in addition to addressing unemployment, United States imperialism and publishing issues in Canada to the AUCC’s agenda at their next meeting. The Canuck article describes the rise of a new Nationalist movement in Canadian universities and the driving forces of the movement, which include unemployment, competition from American and foreign students and graduates and a lack of support from Canadian government bodies.

Mackenzie Valley Pipeline - Speech

File consists of two drafts of Prepas’ speech regarding the Mackenzie Valley Pipeline. In her speech, Prepas outlines the impact that building the pipeline will have on Canadian jobs, resources, trade and environment.

Foreign Ownership

File consists of newspaper clippings relating to efforts to limit the sale of Canadian companies to larger corporations in the United States of America. It includes Trade Minister Jean-Luc Pepin’s explanation of the need for a bill to screen foreign takeovers of Canadian companies, discussion from Toronto Star writers regarding unemployment numbers in Canada and United States President Richard Nixon’s visit to Canada. The clipping titled ‘What Trudeau expects from Nixon’ is somewhat illegible due to the presence of fingerprints across the page. File also includes a handwritten reminder to provide bus transport for Pat Kay and Doris Jantyi.

Auto Pact

File consists of meeting minutes, notes and newspaper articles regarding the Auto Pact agreement between Canada and the United States of America (US). It includes copies of Jim Laxter’s articles for the Last Post titled ‘Lament for an Industry’ and ‘Canada’s resources: the piecemeal surrender,’ which talk about the decline of manufacturing in Canada and the dangers posed by the agreements like the Auto Pact to the Canadian automobile manufacturing industry, amongst other resources being traded or sold to the US. It also includes Prepas’ drafts of speeches on topics such as foreign ownership of Canadian companies, the need for Canada to be an ‘independent nation,’ the history of the automobile manufacturing industry in Canada, women in the workforce, unemployment, and the 1972 Canadian Federal Election and her notes on United States President Richard Nixon’s 1972 visit to Canada. It also includes a draft and printed copy of Mel Watkin’s profile on the history of the Waffle Movement’s development within the New Democratic Party (NDP) and Jim Laxter’s candidacy for leadership of the NDP. File also includes Prepas’ drafted table of the percentages of workers working for Canadian domestic, partly-American, American and foreign firms and brief notes on the Vietnam War.

Auto Pact

File consists of information sheets, newspaper clippings, correspondence, reports, handwritten notes, press statements, news bulletins, contact information, and union proposals related to the Auto Pact Agreement of 1965 and its impacts on the Canadian automobile and aeronautics industries. It includes 12 pages of proposed resolutions put forward by the United Auto Workers Unions of Ontario (UAW) and addressed to the Office and Professional Employees International Union, Local 343 (OPEIU343) and the relevant government bodies for issues that highlighted women’s roles within workers’ unions, the Auto Pact, medical coverage for workers, full-time employment, autonomy for the Canadian branch of the UAW (an international union), and regulation regarding working hours. It also includes a report presented by Dennis McDermott, Vice-President and Director for the Canadian branch of the UAW to the UAW council, in which he describes the state of the Canadian auto and aeronautics industry in the 7 years since the Auto Pact and criticizes the Waffle group’s stance on nationalizing the auto industry and the Waffle group’s call for workers to seize control of plants that have been shut down, citing the lack of direction from the group after calling for socialist revolution. File also includes Michael Gurstein’s report on the ‘Canadian Auto-parts and Automotive Industry,’ prepared for the York Reseaerch Group. Gurstein’s report includes backgrounding information regarding the auto industry from its founding in the early 1900s to the signing of the pact in 1965 and what the Auto Pact means in the present and for the future of the industry and Canada’s economy. Gurstein’s finidngs are based on data from government publications, statistics and industry publications, which can be found in the appendix of his report.

NDP-Waffle Educational File - Texpak Strike

File consists of press releases, newspaper clippings and protest ephemera. A backgrounding document composed by the Canadian Textile and Chemical Union explains that the Texpack strike in Brantford, Ontario was organized to demand higher pay for its workers (most of whom were women), to oppose the layoff decision undertaken by the company after its acquisition by the American Hospital Supply Corporation, and the unethical sale of Second World War-era United States Army bandages, which could not be verified to be sterile, onto the Canadian market with an intention to be used by industrial workers. The backgrounding document also argues that the root cause of Texpack’s situation was the acquisition of Canadian factories by American corporations, which operated the factories as branch plants to the detriment of Canadian workers when corporate cut backs were deemed necessary. File includes a Waffle press release indicating the movement’s support and attendance at the Texpack strike. File also includes two notices of a public conference to be held regarding the Texpack strike and three copies of the Canadian Textile & Chemical Union Bulletin’s October 1971 Texpack Strike Issue. File also includes a large sticker with the words ‘I Don’t Buy Dare Cookies!’ in reference to one of the major food manufacturers where another largely female workforce also decided to go on strike, influenced by the impact of the Texpack strike and a booklet of blank Ontario Waffle donation cheques.

Resources and De-Industrialization Campaign Committee

File consists of meeting minutes, reports, proposed resolutions, and correspondence relating to the work of the Ontario Waffle’s Provincial Resources and De-industrialization Campaign Committee. This committee focused on two central issues: the Mackenzie Valley Pipeline and the regional manufacturing economies within Ontario. The Resource and De-industrialization committee was tasked with stimulating the creation of localized campaign committees by each member’s local Waffle group. It conducted research on both the proposed pipeline’s environmental and indigenous traditional territory impacts and the working conditions within Eastern Ontario factories. Minutes from an emergency meeting of the Ottawa Waffle indicate that there was disagreement in how much money was to be raised and spent for Toronto rallies against the Mackenzie Valley Pipeline (a resources issue), the hiring of an organizer for the rallies and the lack of attention being given to issues of de-industrialization issues in Ontario. File also includes Prepas’ letter indicating her resignation from the Resources and De-industrialization committee in March 1973. File also includes a press release featuring the heading ‘Songs and speeches to deal with resources and jobs at Waffle meeting Tuesday night’ (April 19, 1973). File also includes a poster and event schedule for the ‘Waffle South-Western Ontario Campaign ‘73.’

File includes event information on two Waffle events surrounding the Chilean Coup that overthrew President Salvador Allende. File also includes the proposal of the Constitutional Committee on the ‘Constitution of the Ontario Waffle Movement for an Independent Socialist Canada’ and their recommendations for by-laws within the movement. File also includes agendas, meeting minutes in anticipation of and after the Waffle Convention of 1973.

File includes a Waffle Movement card with an illustrated Canadian flag background dated 1973, pamphlets for the Ontario Waffle Convention ‘73 and ‘Canadian Politics in Historical Perspective,’ a lecture series organized by the Toronto Waffle Educational Commitee, with lecturers that included Caroline Brown, Lorne Brown, John Hutcheson, Jim Laxer, his father Robert Laxer, Stanley Ryerson, Mel Watkins and Reg Whitaker. File includes statements made by the Ontario Waffle regarding the United States’ tariff on Canadian tires in 1973 and newspaper clippings of a public letter from Maxwell W. Ward, President of Wardair Canada Limited regarding a strike within the airline and an article on Ford Motor Company’s move to Brazil for manufacturing. File also includes ‘Ontario Waffle Resolutions’ reached after the Ontario Waffle Provincial Council Meeting between March 31st and April 1st, 1973 with the booklet signed by James Bay. File also includes Graham L Kay’s resignation from the Waffle movement in 1973, an article written about Karleton Armstrong, council minutes, resolutions and labour policy passed by the Ontario Waffle at the movement’s council meeting between July 14 and 15, 1973.

File consists of the Ontario Waffle Movement’s 1973 meeting minutes, newsletters, pamphlets, notes, membership reports and financial reports, correspondence, lecture schedules, a busbill, and an order form for the Ontario Waffle Newspaper. File also includes a proposal to form a Provincial Publicity Committee to consolidate publicity efforts across all groups within Ontario, two annotated bibliographies with books recommended by John D. Smart and Barry G.T. Mills to explain the core tenets of the Waffle, and guidelines for the establishment of the Ontario Waffle newspaper. A letter received from Smart includes a request for Prepas to write about the Mackenzie Valley pipeline. File also includes Prepas’ Waffle Movement membership card for 1973, which features the ‘Waffle Manifesto’ on the back of the card.

File consists of the Ontario Waffle Movement’s 1972 meeting minutes, membership reports, financial reports, memos, newsletters, notes, event schedules, correspondence, suggested reading lists, forms for membership application, calendars, and transmittals, information booklets, membership processing procedures, a draft organizational policy, and a list of instructions for political canvassers. John D. Smart, a co-founder of the Waffle movement, is the primary author of letters received by Prepas. The letters discuss updates and plans for Waffle groups across Canada, the state of the NDP party at the provincial and federal level, and Smart’s administrative duties.

Waffle 1974

File consists of correspondence, event information sheets, forms, handwritten notes, pamphlets, a magazine and a discussion journal. File includes letters to supporters to renew their Waffle membership, event information sheets for Waffle workshops focused on ‘Building the Waffle,’ and a description of the committees within the Ontario Waffle. File also includes the Ontario Waffle’s internal discussion journal ‘Advance: For Independence and Socialism’ (1974), two copies of the magazine ‘North Country’ (1974), and a pamphlet titled ‘The Economics of Canadian Politics Today’ (1974).

Waffle 1972-1973

File consists of newspaper clippings, event information, news releases, statements,memos, correspondence, meeting minutes and agendas relating to the establishment of the Waffler Movement for an Independent and Socialist Canada, after the formal departure of the group from the New Democratic Party caucus. File includes the newsletter Waffle News, PRO TEM issue number 3 with ‘An interview with James Laxer’(1972) and the O. A. P. O. Newsletter with a press release on the throne speech and guaranteed adequate income (G.A.I.). It also includes memos and activity updates from the Kingston Waffle and Ottawa Waffle and other Waffle groups across Ontario, alongside agendas for Waffle conferences in London, Ontario. It also includes the Waffle’s 1972 Federal Election coverage and Waffle co-founder John Smart’s perspective of the Waffle Council Meeting in 1972. It also includes a press release regarding the resignations of Bruce Kidd, James Laxer and Krista Maeots of Toronto and John Smart (Ottawa Centre) from their positions on the executive of the Ontario New Democratic Party and a statement on the Waffle’s own political campaign during the 1972 federal election, where the group decided not to run a candidate, but instead campaign to highlight issues and areas of the country the Liberals, Conservatives and NDP ignored in their platforms.
