Recording of a discussion among Greek Community of Toronto members around a legal matter, as well as live recordings from two community events, one for the Kastorian Society and the other welcoming a new parish priest to Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church.

Greek Canadian community associations – Toronto event programmes

File consists of programmes for events organized by the Greek Community of Metropolitan Toronto, Inc., The Canadian Arcadian Association, the Order of Ahepa and the Sanga Association of Toronto and includes commemorative events and conventions, including the 29th Convention of Greece, USA and Canada.

Greek anti-dictatorship movement and Greek-Canadian democratic organizations. Ephemera and other records.

File predominantly consists of ephemera for political events organized by pro-democracy groups, such as protests and rallies related to the Greek military dictatorship; events for visits to Toronto by Andreas Papandreou (including Greek Freedom Week at York University, 1972); NDP events; Greek political organizing in Canada; and local political organizations in Toronto such as the Association (later Committee) for Restoration of Democracy in Greece, the Greek-Canadian Democratic Association, the Democratic Organization of Cypriots as well as student organizations. Materials include event tickets, a logo for PAK Toronto, posters, flyers, and pamphlets and a photocopy of a membership card (1967-1968) for the Association for Restoration of Democracy in Greece. The file also includes other non-ephemeral materials such as scanned and transcribed political speeches; constitutions, position statements and by laws; meeting minutes and correspondence relating to organizations including the American Committee for Democracy and Freedom in Greece (New York City, NY) and the Greek Canadian Democratic Organization (including notes from their founding assembly, held at the King Edward Hotel Nov 2, 1975; a copy of a congratulatory note to PASOK on its victory in the 1981 Greek elections; a flyer for their women’s club evening of protest; flyer for a meeting against price increases; and a document relating to their proclamation of OXI day). File also includes a letter from Berlin, 24 May 1970, addressed to Greek Anti-Dictatorship Committees Abroad/Rigas Feraios wishing success for its newly formed council and a document outlining the internal rules of the committee of Restoration of Democracy in Greece “Rigas Feraios”.

Festival programmes

File consists of programmes for two Greek Film Festivals (in Toronto and Thessaloniki, 1983) and the Panhellenic Organization of Canada Wine Festival (1974)

File consists of two flyers advertising events hosted by George Papadatos in collaboration with the Greek Canadian History Project , drawing upon his archival holdings.

File consists of two copies of Der Spiegel with cover story entitled Griechenland: Anatomie einer Diktatur (September 30, 1968)

Correspondence. Greek Canadian Cultural Workshop of Toronto, concert promotion and other Toronto cultural events

File consists of correspondence and other records created or received by George Papadatos in the course of his work in various roles for the Greek-Canadian Cultural Workshop of Toronto, particularly relating to planning of performances in Toronto by visiting musicians such as Maria Fantouri in 1980 (notably a sold out event that drew over 4,000 people), Christos Leontis and Los Companeros. File also includes discussion for a Month of Greek Culture planned for May 1983 (an event that did not come to fruition). Records relating to the Greek-Canadian Cultural Workshop of Toronto and related musical performances include their constitution, contracts and other legal and business documentation. Records relating to the musical group Los Companeros include logistics, song translations and a poem composed by Papadatos, entitled “Of What Use”. File also includes some items of ephemera.

Correspondence. Community organizing, journalism and education

File consists of records relating to Papadatos’ work with Greek Immigrants at Eastminster Community Services, as well as to his career as a journalist and teacher. File includes letters of appreciation and other employment-related correspondence, including invitations to speak at university events (particularly relating to the Athens Polytechnic 1973). It also includes minutes from the first editorial committee meeting for Papadatos’ newspaper Metanastis (Voice of the Immigrant) and an item relating to an effort to create a union for Greek Media of Toronto. It includes records relating to the Greek-Canadian Cultural Association (including their Constitution) and the Greek Community of Metropolitan Toronto (including a number of records relating to the organization’s 1982 elections), as well as records relating to the organization of cultural events at Scarborough College and the University of Toronto. The final item in the file is an invitation to a farewell event for Papadatos ahead of his return to Greece.

Concert programmes

File consists of programmes for musical performances including George Dalaras’ first major concert tour in North America (1983), Το ΤΡΙΟ ΣΥΚΑΛΥ, a musical group from Cyprus, and a concert of Greek folklore and popular music organized by the Hellenic-Canadian Music Society of Ontario (1982).

Community event photographs

File consists of photographic prints of community events such as meetings, dances, musical performances. File includes photographs of George Papadatos conducting interviews at events.

Commercial CDs and DVDs

File consists of four commercially produced CDs (some of which appear to be promotional copies, distributed by newspapers such as Ta Nea) and one commercial DVD. The discs’ content mostly relates to the Polytechnic Uprising. One is a CD of music. There is also a chronicle of the military Junta 1965-1974.

Collected ephemera – cultural and political events

File consists of printed ephemera, posters, flyers, circulating letters and press releases related to Papadatos' activities as a political activist, music promoter and member of the Greek diaspora in Toronto during the 1970s and early 1980s. Includes items relating to a wide variety of events, such as flyers for a Greek Canadian Cultural Association meeting to discuss insurance, pensions and by-laws governing Greece and Canada; for an event at the Greek Community Centre (speaker Peter Belegris) commemorating 30 years since the death of Aggelos Sikelianos (speaker Peter Belegris); and for student Greek association events at Scarborough College and York University. A number of items have hand-written notes, set-lists etc overleaf.

Coffee house event ephemera – Trojan Horse, Lyra, Esperides and Titania Music Hall

File contains posters, flyers, tickets and event programmes for various cultural performances and political events and includes the founding meeting of the Greek NDP Committee (Lynn McDonald, M.P.), a meeting at Lyra to celebrate OXI Day, an event for Greek writer Kostas Varnalis,and events at Lyra and Titania celebrating 39 years of EAM-ELAS (Papadatos was the speaker at the Lyra event). Also includes materials relating to a screening of “The Age of the Sea” at Titania; a theatrical performance of “Intermeria” (also at Titania, April 7, 1984); an experimental reading of a play by P. Belegris; and a presentation of Sikelianos (Trojan Horse, March 9, 1980). Some of the items have notes and set lists on verso and some relate to photographs in the Papadatos fonds e.g. of visiting dancers from Trikala. File also includes an invitation to an event at Lyra celebrating George Papadatos’ birthday.

Canadian federal and provincial government reports on multiculturalism and immigration

File consists of symposium report from the final event held to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Multiculturalism policy and program in Canada as well as a newsclipping interleaved (“Canadian Smugness on rights criticized”, Globe and Mail, Nov. 13, 1968) and federal and provincial government publications relating to immigration statistics

Consists of collection of photographic slides documenting George Papadatos' activities as a journalist, scholar, student activist, political organizer, music promoter and performer in Toronto during the 1970s and 1980s.
