Recording of songs by Mikis Theodorakis sung by Maria Farantouri, including "Καρτέρεμα/Karterema", "Αυγή/Avgi", "Πράσινη μέρα/ Prasini mera", "Συλλείτουργο/Sillitourgo", and "Το νερό/To nero". At around 22 minutes and 21 seconds there is a recording of a discussion about the aims and philosophies of PASOK, as well as contemporary Greek politics among Toronto chapter PASOK members.

Publications, Greek language and culture education in Toronto

File consists of a booklet promoting the Modern Greek Language Programme at University of Toronto, an analysis of the Greek language curriculum for public schools by the Greek Community of Metropolitan Toronto, ΝΕΟΙ ΟΡΙΖΟΝΤΕΣ (an educational review), and a booklet from the Lyceum of Folklore Studies.

Promotional materials and ephemera

Series consists of promotional materials and ephemera relating to Toronto Greek-Canadian community political and cultural events organized or attended by George Papadatos during his time in Toronto.  Series includes materials relating to the coffee house scene in Toronto; concert tours featuring Greek musicians, for which Papadatos acted as promoter; political events by various pro-democracy groups such as PAK, EAM and Rigas Fereos; theatrical events; exhibitions and cultural festivals (such as The Images of Greece festival, organized by Papadatos); as well as Annual Dances and sporting events. Materials include posters, event tickets, invitations, flyers and programmes. Some items of ephemera can also be found in 2014-044/001(05), 2014-044/001(10) and 2014-044/001(12).

Programmes for theatrical productions

File consists of theatre programmes including the Greek Student Theatre production of Toromeiko in Toronto, May 1976 (first performed in Montreal, 1973), a Toronto performance of an adaptation of Gogol’s The Diary of a Madman in Greek (1979), and ΕΝΑΣ ΕΛΛΗΝ ΣΤΗΝΟΝ ΤΑΒΛΑ a theatrical satire about the Greek Community (Toronto, 1983).

Professional and personal records

Series primarily consists of George Papadatos’ professional records pertaining to his various activities as an engaged member of the Toronto Greek-Canadian cultural and political community, including materials relating to his involvement with organizations such as the Greek-Canadian Cultural Association, the Greek-Canadian Cultural Workshop of Toronto, the Greek Community of Metropolitan Toronto, the Greek-Canadian Democratic Organization and the Hellenic Canadian Organization, amongst others. Series also includes records relating to Papadatos teaching career at Scarborough College (University of Toronto), employment assisting new Greek immigrants at Eastminster Community Services and activities performed as a music promoter and as owner of the Trojan Horse café. Series includes correspondence, legal and business documents, reports, meeting minutes and agenda, news clippings, scrapbooks, writing and research materials such as journal articles, papers, newsletters, proposals, government and education-related documents, pamphlets and brochures. While consisting predominantly of collected ephemera, file 2014-044/001(04) also contains a number of professional records relating to political organizing.  Very few personal records are included, however the series does contain some records relating to Papadatos’ immigrant status and employment. Other items relating to personal events such as invitations to his birthday party and to a farewell event prior to his return to Greece in 1984 can be found in 2014-044/001(02) and 2014-044/001(06).

Posters for political and cultural events

File consists of various posters relating to Greek cultural and political events, predominantly musical performances (many at coffee houses such as The Trojan Horse, Lyra and Esperides), but also including theatrical performances, events organized by political organizations, such as EAM, and exhibitions. Some of the posters have annotations overleaf (which appear to be event set lists or table plans). Includes posters for musicians such as Manos Loizos, the Companeros, Marcelo Puente (poster is inscribed to George Papadatos) and Maria Farantouri (the concert tour of North America presented by Sotos Kappas). File also includes poster advertising Papadatos’ weekly newspaper, Metanastis, a reproduction of a political poster featuring a quote by Aggelos Sikelianos and posters for the 1980 University of Toronto event “Images of Modern Greece”, organized by Papadatos.

Photostatic reproductions related to Greek anti-dictatorship movement

File consists of reproductions of illustrations, articles and posters (some with handwritten annotations in Greek) related to the Greek anti-dictatorship movement in New York and Canada, collected by George Papadatos for various uses in the Toronto Greek community. For example, see 2014-044/001(01) for a reproduction of the “Down with junta” image incorporated in a concert programme cover.

Photographs of political demonstrations, PAK events and other Toronto Greek community events

File consists of photographic prints of Toronto political demonstrations organized by PAK and other anti-dictatorship groups and relating to peace and democracy in Greece, including the July 17, 1982 demonstration at Toronto City Hall (relating to the invasion of Cyprus). File also includes photographs of other Greek community events and activities in Toronto, such as parades, dinners, dances, sporting events and concerts. File also includes some photocopies

Series consists of photographs of, by or collected by George Papadatos and pertain to events held by the Toronto Greek-Canadian community during the 1970s TO 1990s, such as musical performances, dances, the Toronto coffee house scene, political meetings and rallies, parades. Some photographs relating to the Trojan Horse coffee house can also be found in the scrapbook in 2014-044/001(10).

Poster-sized photographic print of George Papadatos and friend Michalis Theoridis during a visit to Athens. The photograph was taken in the basement wine cellar and gathering place known as “Erasmias Place.” Theoridis was a prominent figure in anti-Junta activities in Toronto. He was a journalist, as well as a frequent performer of spoken word material in the Toronto Greek-Canadian community including venues such as the Danforth Music Hall.

Photograph album: community events

File consists of photographic prints of various Toronto Greek community events including dinners, dances, musical performances, political events (attendees include Bob Rae and Lynn McDonald), a film crew at a Greek print shop, the entrance to the LYRA Coffee House and other Danforth locations. Includes images of George Papadatos speaking on stage at what appears to be an event celebrating publication of his anthology of music and poetry: Anthologio antistasiakēs technēs. File also includes a photograph of politician Bob Rae signed to “The readers of “EVDOMADA” and the people of Broadview.”

Periodicals

Series consists of Greek language newspapers, magazines and journals accumulated by George Papadatos primarily during his time in Canada and relating to his work as a journalist and editor as well as to his interest in politics and his position as an active member of the Greek Canadian community cultural and political scene. The majority of the newspapers in the series were produced by and for the Greek Canadian community in Toronto and include a number of political and satirical publications as well as ones providing local news. Series includes issues of the newspaper Metanastis (The Immigrant), owned and produced by Papadatos, as well as Ta Nea, to which he contributed articles and served as editor for a time. A number of the newspapers in the collection were published by Deca printing house (owned by Dimitrius Aivalis) who played an important role in the Toronto Greek Canadian community as printer of many publications and ephemera relating to cultural and political, anti-dictatorship, events. Series also includes a variety of publications relating to the Greek diaspora across Canada and globally, including a few English-language publications that contain articles relating to Greek politics and culture, particularly items relating to the Trojan Horse coffee house.
