The fonds consists of records that document Mistry's career as a writer, including financial records, personal and professional correspondence, publicity files, first editions and translations of his published works, notes, drafts and galleys of his short stories, travel essays and novels, including "Tales from Firozsha Baag," "Such a Long Journey," "A Fine Balance," and "Family Matters." It also includes records documenting his work with his literary agent and publishers, his selection to the Oprah Book Club, the burning and banning of "Such a Long Journey" at the University of Mumbai in September 2010, Mistry's involvement with literary festivals and awards, his investiture into the Order of Canada, and his support of organizations devoted to literacy, humanitarianism, and writers.

Accrual to the Rohinton Mistry fonds

The accession consists of literary papers including personal and professional correspondence, short stories, travel essays and manuscripts, photographs from filming the movie adaptation of “Such a Long Journey,” and photographs from award ceremonies and convocations for several honorary doctorate degrees. Included are records pertaining to Mistry’s investiture in the Order of Canada, research material, financial records, and contributions to journals and literary periodicals plus short stories, essays, excerpts published in various anthologies, and bound galley proofs written by other authors requesting testimonials.

Correspondence

The series consists of personal and professional correspondence including copies of letters received by Mistry from Leone Rook, John Metcalfe, Graeme Gibson, Alberto Manguel, Craig Stephenson, John Irving, Jane and Tony Urquhart, Pico Iyer, Louis de Berniers, Mavis Gallant, Greg Hollingshead, Michael Ondaatje, Greg Gatenby, David Staines and Steven Heighton among others and, in many cases, copies of letters written by Mistry himself.

Financial Records

Consists of royalty statements, letters of permission, contracts, correspondence with agents and other material that documents financial transactions related to the sales and marketing of Mistry's work.

Awards, reading tours and promotional material

The series consists of correspondence, invitations, travel schedules, clippings and promotional material related to the publication of Mistry's work and to reading tours associated with it including his selection to the "Oprah Book Club". Series also includes material pertaining to the awards and nominations he received for his books.

File consists of a magazine with an article by Rohinton Mistry, "Once upon a time in Bombay" (pp. 24-33). The "Editor's note" on p. 3 refers to Mistry as "A new strength in travel writing."

Toronto

File consists of a magazine with a brief article by Ellen Vanstone with accompanying photograph identifying Rohinton Mistry as part of "The Next Wave" (p. 31).

Manuscripts and correspondence on digital media

File consists of digital media containing manuscripts of novels, stories and essays plus personal and professional correspondence. Manuscripts and drafts included for “A Fine Balance” and “Family Matters.”

File consists of a reading from Such a Long Journey, read by Sugith Varudhers and produced by Sandra Rabinovitch.

Photographs : various events

File consists of photographs from events such as the Commonwealth Prize, Booker Prize, Giller Prize and a PEN Canada. Included are photographs from a reading at St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai during a research trip to India, and travel photographs from Paris and Venice.

Booker at bedtime

File consists of a reading from Such a Long Journey, read by Emma Fielding and produced by David Hunter.

Correspondence

File consists of communications with the CBC, the Book Channel, World Economic Forum, IMPAC Award, Commonwealth Foundation, Irish Times, and publishers in Denmark, Brazil, Spain, Germany, and France, as well as requests for blurbs for books soon to be published.

Mother Teresa and Sisters of Charity

File consists of three copies of a photograph of Mother Teresa with Sisters of Charity, taken at Mother House, Calcutta, India. One copy signed by the photographer, Peter Canclini, who sent the posters to Mistry as a fan of “A Fine Balance.”

Saturday Night

File consists of a magazine with an article by Rohinton Mistry, "Edinburgh or bust" (pp. 39-41).

Photographs : Giller, Booker, book tours

File consists of photographs and correspondence from book prize ceremonies including the Giller Prize in 1999 and 2000, the Booker Prize in 2002, a book tour in Germany, Switzerland, etc., and others. Included is a photograph from an authors’ farewell lunch for Avie Bennett.

Giller Prize for A Fine Balance

File consists of a programme for the prize gala, newspaper clippings, and promotional material such as posters and book bags bearing Rohinton Mistry's image.

File consists of publicity and book signing requests, as well as publicity for the Emblem Edition of “A Fine Balance,” invitations for readings, and requests for articles and interviews. Included are typeset pages from “Tales from Firozsha Baag” with edits by Mistry and the publisher.

File consists of itineraries and receipts for travel to events including the Commonwealth Writers Prize, the Booker Prize, Edinburgh Book Festival, and book tours in the United States, Norway, Denmark, the United Kingdom, Netherlands, and Spain.
