Contracts

File consists of originals and copies of contracts and releases, copies of book title pages, correspondence and notes pertaining to publications written by Powe, including “Expresso ‘67”, “Killing Ground”, “Last Days of the American Empire”, “The Aberhart Summer”, “The Ice Eaters”, stage rights for “The Aberhart Summer” and “Aldershot 1945”.

Correspondence : 50th wedding anniversary

File consists of letters from Jean Chretien, Joseph Volpe, Romeo LeBlanc, and John Godfrey, sent to Powe and his wife, Alys, on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary. Also included is an invitation to an 50th anniversary party.

Correspondence with Don Gutteridge

File consists of two letters exchanged between Powe and Gutteridge regarding their respective books, “The Aberhart Summer” and “Bewilderment”.

Diefendollars

File consists of several versions of “Diefendollars”, novelty dollar bills worth 91 or 92.5 cents, produced by the Liberal Party of Canada and used as campaign propaganda.

File consists of Powe’s University of Alberta’s BA and MA diplomas, as well as a University of Alberta Bachelor of Education diploma belonging to his father-in-law, Godfrey Brady.

File pertains to Powe’s involvement with this Liberal riding association. Records are copies of two letters from Powe to MP John Godfrey and a letter from Godfrey to Powe.

Draft writing

File consists of mostly handwritten, unidentified drafts by Powe, notes, and newspaper clippings. Included in the file is a document entitled “The working methods of an author: preface prepared by Pierre Berton as an introduction to his papers deposited with McMaster University Archives” (Jan. 1990).

Edmonton travel file

File pertains to Powe’s travels with his wife, Alys, to Alberta and British Columbia in August 1992. Included in the file is correspondence, itineraries, brochures and facsimiles.

Family and travel photographs

File consists of photographs of Powe as a teenager, Powe’s parents, Wilbur and Lillian, in their yard, as well as photographs of scenery in Banff, Victoria, Vancouver, Seattle, and the Columbia Ice Fields in Alberta.

File consists of photographs taken by Powe while in Ghana during independence celebrations in 1957. Photographs include images of individuals, buildings, natural scenery, and large gatherings of people. Some photographs in this file were taken in Canada.

File pertains to a 2004 book review written by Powe for the Literary Review of Canada. Records include review drafts, a copies of the published review, printed copies of e-mail exchanged with editors Bronwyn Drainier and Robin Roger, notes, newspaper clippings, and an invoice. Included is a letter from B.W. Powe regarding an introduction to Robin Roger.

File pertains to Powe’s research for and writing of a history of the Norwich Union Life Insurance Company. Records include a photograph of Powe in front of the company’s building, newspaper clippings, and typescript notes from interviews with executives and managers.

File consists of correspondence, notes, newspaper clippings, magazine articles, and an unpublished manuscript by Powe entitled “The Mountie Takes a Dive” (Oct. 1970).
