Performances, concerts, exams

The series consists of programmes, pamphlets and notes for examinations, concerts and single performances, for the Faculty of Music, the Banff Centre, Dalhousie University musical auditorium, Royal Conservatory performance night, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Modern Library, Teatro Alla Scala, the New Music Concerts and others.

Programmes, reports, catalogues

The series consists of vocal and instrument catalogues from manufacturers and music publishers, Faculty of Music programmes, calendars, and related material.

Programmes of musical concerts

The series consists of programmes for concerts and recitals in several venues, as well as those for the University of Toronto, Faculty of Music concerts, Massey Hall, the Royal Alexandra Theatre, the Metropolitan Opera House (New York), and others.

Biographical material

The series consists of Vinci's personal documents and correspondence related to his education and immigration to the United States as Ernst Wreszynski. Also includes newspaper clippings about Vinci and biographical sketches ready for publication. Later accessions include personal and family correspondence between Vinci and his wife, and Vinci and his parents and parents-in-law, and other relatives during the 1930s as they tried to escape Germany. There is some correspondence regarding Vinci's efforts to sponsor his sister-in-law and niece after the Second World War.

Photographs

The series consists of personal photographs of Vinci and family and friends. Also included are photographs of Vinci and students at Banff and several unidentified photographs.

Scrapbooks

The series consists of scrapbooks, arranged by subject and organized chronologically, for recitals and opera (1945-1977); additional scrapbooks are arranged alphabetically by subject (literature, war, world events).

Faculty of Music, University of Toronto

The series consists of notes on teaching methods employed at the school, registration cards, staff lists, examination and marking schemes, attendance lists and alumni membership lists.

Letters and reports

The series consists of reports and correspondence with the Banff School, music festivals, the Royal Conservatory, and related bodies.

Diaries and memoranda

The series consists of Ernesto Vinci's diaries for the period (incomplete), as well as memoranda, address books and related material.

Correspondence

The series consists of Ernesto Vinci's general professional correspondence with the editors of publications, broadcasters, publishers, festivals, governments and schools, and associations. There are also birthday and greeting cards to Vinci. Later accessions include some personal correspondence between Vinci and his wife, and friends.

Series consists of a series of photographic prints, news clippings and printed illustrations of individuals whose likeness was published in the Toronto Telegram. This could include birth, death, marriage, graduation announcements, as well as individuals documented by the newspaper at local events, celebrations, and political, social and organizational activities. Individuals can be ordinary citizens, celebrities, politicians, criminals, socialites, scientists, military personnel, nurses and medical staff, social workers, members of fraternal organizations, clergy and religious, social activists, protesters and others.

Toronto Telegram photographic prints

Series consists of approximately 466, 500 photographic prints created or accumulated by staff at the Toronto Telegram. The largest volume of prints are under the subjects "United States" (ca. 7.2 metres of prints), "Ships) (ca. 5 metres), "England" (ca. 4 metres) and "Canada" (ca. 3.6 metres). Certain subjects have been arranged outside the general subject organization of the prints such as "Personalities" (15 metres); "Personalities/politicians" (ca. 4 metres); "Armed forces personnel" (ca. 8 metres) largely of the World War II era, provably used in reports of missing/wounded/killed in action. As well, there are photographs of groups of servicemen, again largely World War II era. Finally, there is a group of photographs of personalities who were associated with the Toronto Telegram, predominantly from the period after Bassett bought the newspaper (post 1952). The series also includes many photographic images purchased from wire services for the purposes of illustrating national and international stories.

Toronto Telegram photographic negatives

Series consists of approximately 833,500 photographic negatives, the majority of which are black and white 35mm.
The negatives are arranged by subject heading, although there are more subject headings here than in the print series, and tend to be local in nature. Negatives for photographs of personalities have been separated out of the main arrangement.

Toronto Telegram scrapbooks and clippings

Series consists of scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, and printed materials. The scrapbooks are of three types. The fist is a collection of large scrapbooks, approximately 220 in total, that consists of copies of the Toronto Telegram and it's predecessor, The Evening Telegram. These scrapbooks are divided into several categories of material: "Advertising and promotion", "Circulation and Carriers", "Clubs", "Contests", "Events", "Daily and Weekly Features" (such as "schooner Days by C.H.J. Snider); "General Clippings", "News Features" (which include royal visits); "Outdoor Activities"; photo albums of high profile personalities such as royalty and politicians; "Sports", "Theatre and Opera", as wella s feature columns and programs run by the The Globe and Mail and The Toronto Star.
The second group is a collection of scrapbooks and editorials and contests of the Telegram and its rivals, The Toronto Star and The Toronto Globe and Mail. The scrapbooks consists of Toronto Telegram editorians (1962-1967), Globe & Mail editorials (1961-1970) and Toronto Star editorials (1940-1968). There are also indexes to Star editorials, scrapbooks concerning the Star's Santa Claus Fund (1923-1960) and the Star's Fresh Air Fund.
Finally, there are two moderately sized collections of scrapbooks. The first consists of four books, covering the Toronto Transit Commission (1950-1970), and the second covers the canals of the St.Lawrence River (1910-1939).

The newspaper clippings are divided into two broad areas: Personalities, and Subjects. These consists of clippings from the Telegram arranged alphabetically by personality name, including such people as Winston Churchill, Henry Fort, Mitchell Hepburn, and Nellie McClung; and subjects, ranging from Abortion to Medicine and Australia to Japan. Both groups of files are complete only to the letter "M" (the remaining files do not appear to have been transferred to the archives).
The printed material consists of accompanying material removed from the files of photoprints from the 1987-001 accession. It contains information about the subjects of the photos they were separated from and are cross-referenced with those print files.

Moving Image records

Series consists of video tape cassettes of the company's performances, rehearsals, television broadcasts, and an interview (performances and commercials). Included are performances of La valse, Bella, Hot house, Inching, Triptych, Memento, Ces plaisirs, Totem, and others. The videos come in half-inch and three-quarter inch VHS format, and half-inch Beta max format.

Graphic materials

Series consists of promotional photographs in black & white and colour, negatives, contact sheets, as well as personal photographs of Grossman and others. For the most part the photographs are related to performances of the Grossman Company.

Administrative and fundraising

Series consists of general correspondence with and information about other dance companies, etc. Included in the series are fundraising records, such as records of donations, corporate and foundation sponsorships and appeals, material from the Board of Director's Fundraising committee, samples of appeal letters, and related material.

Performance files

Series consists of material relating to individual venues and to larger tours, including contracts, applications for touring grants from the Canada Council, travel budgets, and other material.

Grant application files

Series consists of grant applications to the Canada Council, the Ontario Arts Council, the Metropolitan Toronto Arts Council, and the Toronto Arts Council, including general applications, funding for tours, targeted grants (Development workshops, Teacher training, Promotional video, specific purchases of equipment, etc). As well, there are applications for funds to the Ministry of Culture and Communications (Ontario) for tour monies, management development, money from the Half Back promotion, and applications for grants from the department of External Affairs (Canada) for offshore tours, the Department of Communications (Canada) for specific purcahses and related material.

Clipping files

Series consists of reviews, previews, and photographs of Danny Grossman Dance Company as well as notices of the Paul Taylor Dance Company and the Toronto Dance Theatre, two companies in which Grossman was a dancer prior to 1975.

Public engagement

Series contains documents generated from performances, including educational initiatives, performed primarily in Toronto and tours across Canada and the north-eastern United States. Also, includes work by other choreographers produced by the company. Series consists of programming targeting primary and secondary schools in the form of curricula, teaching materials, educational marketing kits, feedback forms. Majority of records refer to Noondance and Curriculum in Motion educational initiatives.

Documents include itineraries, newspaper clippings, correspondence, programs, press releases, grant applications, contracts, feedback/participant surveys, and lobby displays. Few choreographic notations appear in this series (those that appear are in the Benesh Movement Notation (BWN) style).

Additional material related to the company's public engagement can be found in the correspondence and organisational records series. Aside from lobby displays, research and creative material used to develop repertoires do not appear in this series.

Correspondence

Series primarily consists of letters, cards, and printed emails written to Danny Grossman on a personal nature from industry professionals and friends, family, mentors, and former company members. Some files are subject files containing only photos, newspaper clippings and/or works created by the individual.

Business correspondence is located in this series include letters of support, thanks, and congratulations for the company. Some letters written on behalf of the company are primarily letters of recommendation for dancers. Additional business correspondence is located in the organisation records series.

Organisational records

Series consists of records pertaining to administrative operations including development (correspondence, donor and marketing research, and grant applications), promotional material (programs, newspaper clippings, announcements, newsletters, magazine articles, press releases), and activism in the dance community through professional associations, government councils, and conferences (correspondence, transcripts, and speeches).

Additional business correspondence is located in the correspondence series. The public engagement series contains documents generated from organising to tours and documents from grants that funded specific repertoires.

Personal files

Series consists of date calendars (1965-1987), address books, honourary degrees, curriculum vitae, miscellaneous notes and personal items.

Notebooks, sketchbooks and day planners

Series consists of notebooks, day planners and sketchbooks created and/or used by Crosbie, as well as a number of calendars and an address book. The notebooks in this series include a variety of writing, including general notes, lists, notes pertaining to Crosbie’s writing projects and PhD research, as well as personal writing and drawings. Some items in this series contain loose ephemeral items, notes, letters, and photographs.

Writing and production files

The series consists of correspondence, research material, notes, contracts, and manuscript and typescript drafts of Sherman's plays including "A Place Like Pamela," "Three in the Back, Two in the Head," "The League of Nathans," "Patience," "To Cry is Not So," "What the Russian's Say," "Field," "The Merchant of Showboat," "Quirt," "Reading Hebron," "The Retreat" and "It's All True," "An Acre of Time," "The Brothers Karamazov," "The Message," and others. It also includes copies of scripts containing revisions made during the production of his plays, correspondence and financial records related to these productions, and programs and reviews of the rehearsals and performances of these works. The series also includes correspondence, story ideas and outlines, proposals, research material, contracts, and typescript draft scripts for radio and television programmes including "P.M.O.", "National Affairs", "The Hard Wood," "Graf," "ReGenesis," "Afghanada," "Rosendorf Quartet," "Galileo," "Badlands," "After the Orchard," "Between Two Worlds," "Jonestown," "Murdoch Mysteries," "Zone of Separation," "Wrecking Ball," "Abbatoir," "Flashpoint," "Mind," "Last Hope," "The Rules," "Invectus," "Spadina," "Colder in the Suburbs," "Ronde-et-vous," "Blueprint," and "The Public Health," among others. The records pertaining to the production "Bloodletting and miraculous cures," based on the critically-acclaimed novel by Vincent Lam, are particularly comprehensive and include drafts, notes, correspondence, research files, and digital recordings of dailies, director's, producer's, and various other cuts of individual episodes. Among the earlier writings represented in this series can be found copies of essays, articles and plays written by Sherman during his years in the Creative Writing Program at York University as well as typescript copies and clippings of several of his articles and reviews which have appeared in The Globe and Mail, The Toronto Star, Books in Canada and other publications.

Series consists of home videos documenting everyday life of the donor's Chinese-Russian family including footage of four RCMP weddings and a dinner, Christmas, Chinese New Year, and children playing with toys.

Series consists of an Iranian-Canadian family's home video of a father and daughter visiting Iran and includes footage of Shiraz, the Takht-e Lamshid, Isfahan, the Great Mosque (Shah Mosque), and Naghsh-e Jahan Square.

Series consists of a home movie filmed in Winnipeg documenting a Hong Kong-Chinese family's Red Packet (hóngbāo) ceremony taking place at Mr Wong’s 70th birthday celebration in 2002.

Series consists of digitized home movies documenting an Indian family in Canada communicating via video letters to family in India. Video letters include Indian nursery rhymes, biryani songs, and footage of children practicing Urdu and memorizing the Quran in Arabic.

Project and donor contributed description follows: "In the Javeed family’s apartment in Scarborough ON, two boys aged between 3 and 7 create a video letters to their grandmother who resides overseas in India. Both boys are born and live in Canada. The videos document shifts in communication technologies, at a time prior to the use of communication apps like WhatsApp, used to keep in touch with family. Scarborough was quite diverse by the early 2000s, and the boys generally felt connected to their peers, although their mother remembers they had experienced racism and some issues at school. She attests that they grew up differently than she did as a first generation immigrant, wherein she felt like an outsider in Toronto in the early eighties. The family had a lot of discussions as they were growing up about these issues, and ensured the boys were familiar with current affairs."

Accession consists of digitized home movies from an Indian family in Canada documenting family members visiting Canada. Project and donor contributed description follows: "Sometime between 1987 and 1988, it's the summer season and the Jabbar family welcomes uncles and aunts over for a visit to Canada, staying at their apartment in Scarborough, ON. Family was always welcome at the Jabbar household and they are happy and willing to stay for weeks at a time despite the small space. The footage shows how multigenerational the gatherings are, which included S's grandmother who recently came to live with the family."

The series consists of the administrative files of 'What', including financial statements and budgets, records of expenses, contracts, advertising information, clippings, correspondence, press releases and other material related to the ongoing operation of the magazine; submissions which includes typescript copies of stories sent to 'What', story ideas, writers' invoices, 'What' guidelines and writer's files which are a series of files arranged alphabetically which contain correspondence, stories and clippings pertaining to particular authors.

Lo family videos

Series consists of home movies pertaining the everyday of a Chinese family in Regina including footage of family visiting from Macau in the wintertime, children playing and receiving Christmas presents, the family picking fruits and vegetables in the backyard.

Series consists of home videos documenting her friends and Guyanese family in Toronto and overseas, including the Mahaica Market in Guyana.

Series consists of photographic prints and negatives, with some accompanying textual records, created or compiled by Luigi Nasato over the course of his life and career as an artist. Primarily includes photographs of works of art, some of which were created by Nasato himself, as well as family and travel photographs. Series consists of materials pertaining to the artistic life and career of Luigi Nasato. Includes drawings, sketches, paintings, technical drawings, art objects, and other material created or compiled by Nasato, including extensive artwork related to his role as a mosaicist for various churches in and around Toronto, Ontario. Series also includes: notes on art history and artistic technique created by Nasato as both a student and professional artist; product catalogues and price lists; invoices and other financial documents; and other material.

Biographical and administrative records

Series consists of biographical and administrative records pertaining to the life and achievements of Luigi Nasato. Includes: plaques and certificates; birth, marriage, citizenship, immigration and other governmental records; communion and educational documents; biographical statements and resumes; personal and professional correspondence; clippings and articles about Nasato and kin; Nasato's obituary; and other material.

Women's Legal Education and Action Fund (LEAF) files

Series consists of records created and accumulated by Marilou McPhedran through her association with the Women's Legal Education and Action Fund (LEAF), a national organization promoting legal equality for women in Canada, founded in 1985. The records in this series date from the early 1980s to the mid-2000s and pertain to McPhedran's work as a LEAF co-founder, as a member and chair of the board of directors of the LEAF Foundation, and as a member and chair of the LEAF board of directors. These records are predominantly LEAF administrative files, files relating to various fundraising efforts of the LEAF Foundation, and resource materials for LEAF-related legal cases. Files include notes, correspondence, notebooks, memoranda, draft documents, agendas, minutes, financial statements, grant applications, magazine articles, newsletters, news releases, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, and photographs. Many of the files in this series were created and accumulated by former LEAF president Susan Tanner.

Women's College Hospital files

Series consists of records created and accumulated by Marilou McPhedran during and after her tenure as corporate director of women's health partnerships at Women's College Hospital from 1994 to 1996. The records in this series pertain predominantly to a reproductive technologies project focused on provision of access to methotrexate, a non-surgical aborticant, and to health-related conferences attended by McPhedran. Files include correspondence, conference materials, memoranda, newspaper clippings, notices, reports, brochures, and electronic documents.

University of Waterloo and Pragma Council files

Records in this series pertain to Marilou McPhedran's association with the University of Waterloo and her two terms, in 1994 and 2000, as Planner-in-Residence at the University of Waterloo's School of Planning. These records predominantly document McPhedran's work at the University of Waterloo during the fall of 2000, when she taught a seminar course titled "Building healthy communities : local to global human rights." Also included in this series are records pertaining to conferences of the Pragma Council, with which McPhedran became involved through her association with the University of Waterloo. Files in this series include notes, course materials, correspondence, conference materials, memoranda, newspaper clippings, journal articles, a student paper, and a CD-ROM.

T-shirts and buttons

Series consists of t-shirts and buttons accumulated by Marilou McPhedran and pertaining to her activities, associations and interests, particularly women's rights. Included in this series are t-shirts produced by the Women's Legal Education Action Fund (LEAF), Healthy City Toronto, and the National Action Committee on the Status of Women. The buttons in this series are personal, made using family photographs, and protest/organizational buttons.

Task Force on the Sexual Abuse of Patients files

Series consists of records created and used by Marilou McPhedran while serving as chairperson of two task forces on the subject of sexual abuse of patients by physicians. The first of these independent task forces was commissioned by the College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1990 and included members Harvey Armstrong, Rachel Edney, Pat Marshall, Roz Roach and coordinators Briar Long and Bonnie Homeniuk. The records in this series pertain to task force hearings and meetings and document the process of preparing the task force's preliminary and final reports. These records include McPhedran's resource materials and first-person testimonies submitted to the task force. Also included in this series are records created when the task force was reconvened in 2000 to review the impact of the Regulated Health Professions Act. Files in this series consist of reports, correspondence, memoranda, legal documents, notes, newspaper clippings, financial statements, academic papers, photographs, electronic documents, and video cassettes.

Subject files

Series consists of a variety of records created and accumulated by Marilou McPhedran. These records reflect the scope of McPhedran's political, professional and research interests and activities. Subjects covered in this series include constitutional reform, women's health (national and international), feminism, family violence, sexual abuse, and workplace discrimination/harassment. Also documented in this series is McPhedran's participation in conferences, political campaigns and committee work. Records pertaining to some of McPhedran's contractual employment, articles written and her biographical information are also part of this series. Files in this series include notes, conference materials, brochures and pamphlets, journal articles, correspondence, newspaper clippings, memoranda, reports, CVs, electronic documents, and photographs.

Speeches and speaking engagement files

Series consists of records pertaining to Marilou McPhedran's speaking engagements and speeches given by McPhedran at conferences and other events in Canada between 1984 and 2005. These records reflect the scope of McPhedran's areas of interest and knowledge, including topics involving constitutional issues, women's health and legal rights, and sexual abuse and harassment. Files in this series include correspondence, transcripts of speeches, pamphlets, conference materials, newspaper clippings and magazine articles, notes, memoranda, brochures, a photograph, an audio cassette and a video recording.

Sexual abuse prevention guide files

Series consists of records created and used by Marilou McPhedran in the preparation of her 2004 book, "Preventing sexual abuse of patients : a legal guide for health professionals," co-authored with Wendy Sutton. These records document the research and writing undertaken for the completion of the book, as well as details of their publishing agreement with Butterworths, the book's publication and speaking events at which McPhedran and Sutton spoke on topics pertaining to the book. Files in this series include drafts, manuscripts, correspondence, journal articles, newspaper clippings, computer disks, video cassettes, and photographs.

Posters and certificates

Series consists of posters and certificates accumulated by Marilou McPhedran from the mid-1980s to the mid-2000s. These items pertain to events in which she participated or events held by organizations with which she was involved, including LEAF, the International Women's Rights Project, and the Task Force on the Sexual Abuse of Patients, as well as items related to McPhedran's interests, such as international women's rights. Also included in this series are McPhedran's 1985 Order of Canada certificate and her 2004 Master of Laws diploma.

Photographs and memorabilia

Series consists of photographs and personal memorabilia accumulated by and pertaining to Marilou McPhedran. The photographs in this series are predominantly commissioned portraits of McPhedran used for publication and biographical materials, but also include photographs taken at special events. Memorabilia in this series consists of autographed copies of books written by McPhedran's friends and colleagues.

Ontario Medical Association v. Marilou McPhedran

Series consists of records pertaining to a libel lawsuit brought against Marilou McPhedran by the Ontario Medical Association (OMA) regarding a 2001 article titled "First, do no harm", written by McPhedran for the "Globe and Mail" newspaper. These records document the court appeal of Dr. Anil Mussani, who was found guilty of the sexual abuse of a patient by the College of Physicians and Surgeons, and the OMA's role as intervenor, the nature of McPhedran's response to the lawsuit, and negotiations for the settlement of the case. Included in the series are research and preparatory materials for the lawsuit, some pertaining to McPhedran's work as chair of the Task Force on the Sexual Abuse of Patients, which she headed in 1991 and 2000. The records in this series include legal documents and transcripts; reports; journal, magazine and newspaper articles; correspondence and memoranda.

National Network on Environments and Women's Health files

Series consists of records created and accumulated by Marilou McPhedran while executive coordinator of York University's National Network on Environments and Women's Health (NNEWH) from 2001 to 2003. The records in this series document McPhedran's participation in a number of NNEWH's initiatives, particularly the preparation of a report titled "Rural and remote women's health : research and policy directions" and the organization of conferences, focus groups and research pertaining to that project. Also included in this series are records pertaining to McPhedran's administrative work for NNEWH and her management of work plans, budgets, and personnel. Some of these records relate to McPhedran's departure from NNEWH in 2003. Files in this series include reports, pamphlets, journal articles, correspondence, financial statements, memoranda, minutes, work plans, agendas, newspaper clippings, conference materials, and presentation slides (paper version).

Metropolitan Toronto Action Committee on Violence Against Women and Children files

Series consists of records created and accumulated by Marilou McPhedran relating to METRAC, its mandate and its activities. Records in this series document a number of METRAC's projects in the 1990s, including its involvement with the May-Iles inquest and other legal cases, public safety audits for the Royal Bank and the Toronto Transit Commission, an Ontario Women's Justice Network project, and the production of METRAC publications on stalking and domestic violence. Also included in this series are McPhedran's subject files regarding violence against women and children, METRAC administrative files, and files pertaining to meetings of METRAC's board of directors, on which McPhedran served as a member and/or chair during this period. Files in this series consist of correspondence, minutes, budgets, reports, agendas, financial statements, legal documents, memoranda, newspaper and magazine articles, journal articles, handbooks and pamphlets, notes, mission statements, and work plans.

Master of Laws files

Series consists of records created by Marilou McPhedran during her completion of a part-time LL.M degree in Comparative Constitutional Law through the Professional Development Program at Osgoode Hall Law School, which she began in 2002 and completed in 2004. The records in this series document McPhedran's participation in and written work for a number of courses, including: Aboriginal Peoples and the Canadian Constitution (GS LAW 6727); Constitutional Law and the Charter (GS LAW 6640); Federalism and Institutions of Government (GS LAW 6721); and Freedom of Expression and the Press (GS LAW 6722). Also documented in this series is a trip taken by McPhedran to South Africa to attend a conference on constitutional law. Records in this series include correspondence, conference materials, papers, notes, course outlines, essays, drafts, presentation notes, pamphlets and brochures, and newspaper articles.

Mary Jane Mossman and the Institute for Feminist Legal Studies files

Series consists of files created and accumulated by Marilou McPhedran pertaining to an Ontario Human Rights complaint filed against Osgoode Hall Law School and York University Dean Harry Arthurs and the resulting formation of the Institute for Feminist Legal Research at York University. McPhedran was one of more than 100 lawyers, law students and legal academics who were signatories of this complaint, which charged systemic discrimination against women after Osgoode Hall Law School did not promote Professor Mary Jane Mossman to the position of dean. Liberty Health files

Series consists of records created and accumulated by Marilou McPhedran as a consultant to Liberty Health, a supplementary health care provider, from 1996 to 1997. The records in this series document Liberty Health's plans to transition from a not-for-profit corporation to a marketing and sales-driven organization and pertain to McPhedran's work to design and coordinate internal and external working groups to facilitate this process. Also documented in this series is McPhedran's involvement with the Liberty Health-sponsored 1996 Health Matters Expo. The files in this series consist of agendas, memoranda, correspondence, speaking notes, transcripts, draft documents, briefing notes, presentation slides (paper version), press releases, magazine articles, receipts and invoices, executive summaries, and newsletters.

International Women's Rights Project files

Series consists of records pertaining to Marilou McPhedran's involvement with the International Women's Rights Project (IWRP), founded in 1998 and initially based at the Centre for Refugee Studies at York University. The records in this series document McPhedran's work as founding director to fulfill the project's mandate, which was to strengthen the capacity of women's non-government organizations through research and activism to influence the implementation of international human rights standards. These records reflect IWRP's initial primary focus on the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) Impact Study and Report, but also document projects that emerged from the CEDAW project, including initiatives regarding women's rights in Afghanistan and a project with the Kharvik Centre for Women's Studies in the Ukraine. Records in this series span the period of McPhedran's involvement with IWRP as founder, director and co-director, both at York University and at the Centre for Global Studies at the University of Victoria, from 1998 to 2005. Records in this series include reports, correspondence, papers, newsletters, notes, memoranda, journal articles, photographs, fact sheets, grant proposals, notebooks, budgets, electronic records, audio cassettes, and grant proposals.

Homewood Health Care files

Series consists of records created and accumulated by Marilou McPhedran in her capacity as a consultant to Homewood Health Care, a company providing behavioural, addiction and psychiatric services. The records in this series pertain to McPhedran's contract with Homewood, her participation in company meetings and a roundtable for Homewood employees based on a paper titled "Quest for empathy: human health in the post-deficit society." Files in this series include research notes, correspondence, memoranda, briefing notes, draft documents, reports, pamphlets, presentation slides (paper format), annual reports, invoices, conference materials, and journal articles.

Healthy City files

Series consists of records created and accumulated by McPhedran during and after her term as Corporate Director of the City of Toronto's Healthy City office, from 1991 to 1994. The records in this series pertain to some of the operations and activities of Healthy City, an initiative begun by the City of Toronto in 1989 with a focus on social equity, urban ecological management and the internal activities of the Corporation of the City of Toronto. McPhedran's role as Corporate Director included community development and organizational development through outreach and advocacy, research and policy analysis. These records document in particular McPhedran's work on the 1991 State of the City Report, related conferences, committee work, and research relating to the Healthy City mandate. Some records in this series were created and used after her term as Corporate Director ended, as she remained involved with Healthy City initiatives and the Healthy Communities movement throughout the 1990s. Included in this series are files consisting of notes, correspondence, minutes, memoranda, pamphlets, newsletters, reports, newspaper and magazine clippings, notices, flyers, journal articles, and conference materials.

Global College (University of Winnipeg) files

Series consists of records created and accumulated by McPhedran during her tenure as Principal of the University of Winnipeg’s Global College (2008-2012) and as a faculty member at Global College. Records in this series document her involvement with the work of the College, including special events and conferences, include audiovisual materials, conference materials, photographs, a transcript and correspondence.

Gerstein Centre files

Series consists of records created and accumulated by Marilou McPhedran, pertaining to the operations and functions of the Gerstein Centre, a City of Toronto resource centre for individuals with mental health problems for which McPhedran served as a founding director and board member. The records in this series document a variety of administrative issues, including the formation of the centre, meetings of its board of directors, and the 1990 re-opening of the centre at 100 Charles St. E. The files in this series consist of correspondence, draft documents, minutes, memoranda, budgets, bylaws, reports, newspaper and magazine clippings, and notebooks.

Day planners of Marilou McPhedran

Series consists of day planners maintained by Marilou McPhedran, spanning a 30-year period from 1973 to 2003. These records document McPhedran's scholastic, professional and personal activities, as they record course schedules, examinations, appointments and telephone numbers. Some day planners include photographs of McPhedran and her children taped in the covers, notes, and other loose items. Day planners for the years 1974, 1981, 1982 and 1984 are missing from this series. A note by McPhedran at the end of the 2003 day planner states that it will be her last because of a switch to an electronic Blackberry organizer.

Charter of Rights Education Fund files

Series consists of records created and accumulated by Marilou McPhedran pertaining to the organization and functions of the Charter of Rights Education Fund, which was created to review Ontario legislation for sex discrimination and to ensure compliance with the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. These records document the activities of the fund's committee (including fundraising), its financial resources, Charter Study Days, and audits of government statutes. McPhedran was a co-founder of the fund and member of the finance committee in 1982 and 1983. The files in this series consist of correspondence, grant applications, reports, notes, memoranda, agendas, minutes, and financial statements.

Canadian Women's Foundation files

Series consists of records created and accumulated by Marilou McPhedran relating to her involvement with the creation the Canadian Women's Foundation, founded to distribute funds to programs and projects assisting the self-reliance and economic independence of girls and women. The records in this series document the activities of the foundation in its first two years, particularly its board meetings and fundraising efforts to secure support from individuals, organizations and institutions, as well as McPhedran's work as interim director of the foundation in 1990. These records include correspondence, memoranda, minutes, questionnaires, notes, contracts, news releases, and invoices. Some records in this series were created by McPhedran's assistant for this project, Vicki Armstrong.

Canadian Firearms Program Advisory Committee files

Series consists of records accumulated by Marilou McPhedran pertaining to the work of the Program Advisory Committee of the Canadian Firearms Program, formed in February 2003, on which McPhedran served as a member until its disbandment in 2005. The records in this series document the general activities of the committee, particularly its quarterly meetings held in Ottawa, Ontario. Also included in this series are records pertaining to the Coalition for Gun Control, with which McPhedran was associated prior to and during her time on the Program Advisory Committee. These records include correspondence, reports, government documents, agendas, notes, news releases, fact sheets, briefs, newspaper clippings, and presentation slides (paper version).

Asian Development Bank project files

Series consists of records created and accumulated by Marilou McPhedran while employed as an international consultant for Cowater International, hired to conduct a study and prepare a final report about the work of the Asian Development Bank's RETA 6008: Gender and Governance Issues in Local Government project. The records in this series document McPhedran's contract negotiations with Cowater; her preliminary research; her travel to the Philippines, Nepal, Pakistan and Bangladesh; but primarily her work with Asian Development Bank staff to prepare the final report. The files in this series include correspondence, reports, drafts, contracts, notes, notebooks, programmes, presentation slides (paper copy), financial documents, and outlines.

Series consists of draft and published copies of articles, reports and book chapters written or co-written by Marilou McPhedran. The records in this series reflect the scope of McPhedran's research and professional interests, which includes women's health, the sexual abuse of patients, women and the law, and international development.

Ad Hoc Committee of Canadian Women on the Constitution files

Series consists of records created and accumulated by Marilou McPhedran pertaining to the activities of the Ad Hoc Committee of Canadian Women on the Constitution, a national non-profit organization of Canadian women's groups and individuals formed in January 1981 to ensure equality rights for women were included in the new Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Records in this series document McPhedran's involvement as co-founder, organizer and participant with the committee and its activities, including the National Workshop on the Charter in 1981; Conference of Canadian Women and the Constitution in 1982; Critical Perspectives on the Constitution in 1983; and the National Symposium on Equality Rights in 1985. Also documented in this series is the committee's re-emergence in the late 1980s and early 1990s to challenge constitutional amendments proposed in the Meech Lake and Charlottetown Accords, and to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Ad Hoc Committee in 2006, commemorated with a conference, the Canadian Forum on Women's Activism. Accession consists of home videos documenting Azada Rahi's participation in the Junior Toronto Raptors Dance Pak including rehearsals and performances at the YTV Achievement Awards.

Project and donor(s) contributed description follows: "Around 1994, 9-year old Azada Rahi living in a nearby co-op auditioned at the Cabbagetown Youth Centre to be part of the junior Toronto Raptors Dance Pak. The choreographer was Clarence Ford, who auditioned kids, teens and young adults from all over the city, and ran the Pak once the crew was established. He was a delight to work with, was extremely kind, and was great at keeping so many young people organized and focused.

For Azada, the years she spent in the Pak, encountering Canadian athletes and entertainers were "fun and weird". These tapes are the sole recordings of her dancing that she has had access to. Looking back at the footage proved surprisingly, hilarious, and a chance to reflect on herself as an uninhibited young dancer."

Series consists of recordings pertaining to Doob’s research and scholarship interest in medieval studies, dance, and medicine. Series contains interview transcripts and notes, manuscripts, notes, drafts and publications, lectures, grant applications, research-related photographs, and reference material including dance programmes.

A significant portion of the series pertains to the National Ballet of Canada including research material for over thirty repertoires; interview material with Rudolf Nureyev, Celia Franca, Karen Kain, Erik Bruhn, James Kudelka, Rex Harrington, Dominique Dumais, and Glen Tetley; and the manuscripts of Karen Kain and Rex Harrington’s autobiography drafts.

Series also includes the draft manuscript of ‘Nebauchadnezzar’s Children: Conventions of Madness in Middle English Literature,’ and research material related to labyrinths in the middle ages and Chaucer.

Education and professorial files

Series primarily consists of teaching material including her lecture notes, syllabi, student assignments, course readings, reference material, and course evaluations. Material also contains reports, newsletters, agenda packages, and correspondence pertaining to her administrative roles at York University and a small amount of personal memorabilia and ephemera from her undergraduate and graduate studies.

Series consists of files related primarily to Norquay and her family. Records include her grandfather's notes for his Saturday Night Debating Society activities, her father's Sunday Bible talks, letters to and from her husband, parents and grandparents, records pertaining to Norquay's military service during and after World War II (Canadian Women's Army Corps), a scrapbook created by Norquay as a child, dance cards, some photographs, Norquay's creative writing notes and drafts of her family memoirs, diplomas, family genealogical clippings, Norquay's husband's Chelan Mission Field notes as a new United Church minister, correspondence with friends and admirers, and miscellaneous memorabilia.

Stormy Weather : The Music of Harold Arlen

Series consists of production notes, narration scripts, correspondence, production stills and original film and audio elements for the 2002 performance special “Stormy Weather : The Music of Harold Arlen”. Directed by Larry Weinstein, the 78 minute long celebration of the American popular composer
Harold Arlen (1905-1986) features highly stylized performances of songs such as “Stormy Weather”; “Over the Rainbow”‚ “Paper Moon”‚ and “Get Happy” by the likes of Debbie Harry, Sandra Bernhard, David Johansen, Hawksley Workman and Rufus Wainwright. Interwoven throughout the program is a dramatic treatment of Arlen’s life (Paul Soles playing the role), filled with public success and great personal sadness. Co-produced by Rhombus, BBC, SBS-TV Australia, and others. Material includes numerous contact sheets of each performance set, with artist approvals, as well as original 24 track masters of each performance.

Red Violin

Series consists of scripts, multilingual translations, media coverage reports, photographs and the central prop for “The Red Violin”, arguably, Rhombus’ most ambitious and successful production to date. Written by Don McKellar and directed by Francois Girard, The Red Violin features scenes in French, English, Mandarin, Italian and German, requiring significant translation and subtitling.
Filmed on location in Chicheley Hall and Oxford in England, China, Cremona, Italy, Vienna, Austria and Montreal, the film traces the life and travels of the famous ‘red violin’, from its creation in 17th century Italy by the master Nicolo Bussotti (Carlo Cecchi), through it’s exodus from an 18th century Austrian monastery to 19th century Oxford, Cultural Revolution-era China to a Montreal auction house, where an appraiser (Samuel L. Jackson) and conservator (Don McKellar) try to establish its authenticity and provenance.
The film features actors Jean-Luc Bideau, Jason Flemyng, Sylvia Chang, Julian Richings and Colm Feore. Violin solos used in the musical score were performed by Joshua Bell.

The Red Violin received significant critical acclaim. The film swept the 1999 Genie Awards, picking up trophies for art direction (Francois Séguin), cinematography (Alain Dostie), costume design (Renée April), musical score, sound (Claude La Haye, Jocelyn Caron, Bernard Gariépy Strobl, Hans Peter Strobl), best screenplay (Don McKellar and Francois Girard), direction (Froncois Girard) and best motion picture. For the Jutra Awards of 1999, the film also took awards in the areas of art direction, best cinematography, editing (Gaétan Huot), best supporting actor (Colm Feore) score, sound, screenplay, direction, and best film.

It also won the 2000 Oscar for best original musical score (John Corigliano).

Slings and Arrows

Series consists of scripts, production documentation, props, set designs, promotional material and original film and audio elements (including episode masters, original film and dialogue overdubs) of the Rhombus-produced television series “Slings & Arrows”. Early drafts of scripts by Susan Coyen, Bob Martin and Mark Mckinney refer to the project as “St. Ratford” and “Shakespeareville”. Other writing credits are attributed to Tecca Crosby and Sean Reycraft for Season 3 of the production.
Directed by Peter Wellington, the plot revolved around “legendary theatrical madman” Geoffrey Tennant (Paul Gross) who returns to the New Burbage Theatre Festival (a thinly veiled Stratford Festival) to assume the Artistic Directorship after the sudden death of his mentor Oliver Welles (Stephen Ouimette). Geoffrey is haunted by Oliver throughout all three seasons of Slings & Arrows in which he stages and directs Hamlet, Macbeth and King Lear. Also starring Martha Burns as Geoffrey’s former flame/problematic lead actress Ellen Fanshaw and Mark McKinney as the festival’s scheming General Manager Richard Smith-Jones. Also stars Geraint Wyn Davies, William Hutt, Colm Feore, Sarah Polley, Rachel McAdams, Luke Kirby, Sean Cullen and Don McKellar.
Each season featured a musical number sung written by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison by actors Michael Polley and Graham Harley.
Slings & Arrows was broadcast in Canada on Movie Central and The Movie Network channels in 2003, 2005 and 2006. It was later broadcast on the Sundance Channel in the United States.
The production received Gemini Awards for the best dramatic series and best writing in a dramatic series in 2006 and 2007, best direction in a dramatic series for Peter Wellington in 2006, and acting awards for Paul Gross (2004 and 2007), Martha Burns (2006), Susan Coyne (2006), Rachel McAdams (2004), Mark McKinney (2006) and Stephen Ouimette (2007). The series also received awards from the Writers Guild of Canada Awarded for best drama series in 2004, 2006 and 2007 and awards from the Directors Guild of Canada for picture editing (2006 and 2007), sound editing (2004) and outstanding television series drama (2006).

Saddest Music in the World

Series consists of scripts, correspondence, production notes, original film and audio elements, promotional material and props from the 2003 film “The Saddest Music in the World”. Directed by Guy Maddin, The Saddest Music in the World was co-written by Guy Maddin and George Toles based on the original screenplay by Kazuo Ishiguro. Maddin adapted the screenplay to suit his early twentieth century film aesthetic of grainy black and white photography and slightly out-of-sync sound. The film features a number of film formats and techniques, with black and white 16 and 8mm original film negatives and some colour film imitating early Technicolor.

Described by some critics as a ‘sort-of’ musical, the film is set in Depression-era Winnipeg, with beer baroness, Lady Port-Huntly (Isabella Rossellini) hosting a competition to determine the saddest music in the world (in hopes of increasing her profits). With the tagline “If you’re sad, and like beer, I’m your lady”, the film centers on the men of the Kent family who confront the secrets of their past while locked in the competition for the prize of $25,000.Younger brother Chester (Mark McKinney), the cynical and failed Broadway producer, is ready to mesmerize his former lover with American bravado, assisted by his nymphomaniac amnesic muse, Narcissa (Maria de Medeiros). Older brother Roderick (Ross McMillan), a cellist returning from post-war Serbia, is inconsolable over the disappearance of his beloved wife. Their despairing but patriotic father Fyodor (David Fox) is tormented with guilt over the accidental amputation of the legs of his one true love, Lady Port-Huntly.

Co-produced by Rhombus and Buffalo Gal Pictures, the film won the Directors Guild of Canada’s outstanding achievement in production design (Mathew Davies) and the Genies for costume design (Meg McMillan), editing (David Wharnsby) and original musical score (Christopher Dedrick) in 2004. Guy Maddin also received the Film Discovery Jury Award for best director from the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival the same year. Maddin and and Toles received the Chlotrudis Award for best adapted screenplay in 2005.

Perfect Pie

Series consists of scripts, production binders, correspondence, production stills and all the major film elements of the feature film, including original footage, release prints (one for the India Film Festival), interpositives, optical sound tracks and trims. Directed by Barbara Willis Sweete, the film covers the course of a weekend’s reunion between two estranged ‘best friends’ : a bright and popular beauty who married her high school sweetheart and became a farm wife and a sensitive ugly-duckling who fled her alcoholic mother and recreated herself to become an opera diva. Together they decipher the fragmented memories of a horrifying event that separated them as children and kept them apart. Co-produced by Rhombus and Odeon Films.

Ravel’s Brain

Series consists of research notes, photographs, correspondence, production notes, film and audio elements of the documentary “Ravel’s Brain”. Written and directed by Larry Weinstein, “Ravel’s Brain” is described as a “musical/visual tone poem” exploring the final five years of composer Maurice Ravel (1875- 1937), who due to the degenerative brain conditions of aphasia and apraxia, was
able to produce music but not write it down or perform it. The project was initiated in early 1998 by Weinstein but was not completed until 2000, due to resistance from the Ravel estate.

Featuring the performances of the WDR (Sinfonieorchester des Westdeutschen Rundfunks) Symphony Orchestra and Radio Choir of Cologne, the film features interviews with Ravel’s colleagues, archival footage of his home in Montfort- l’Amaruy and his birthplace of Basque Ciboure. The bulk of the work was filmed on location in Marrakesh, a source of inspiration to Ravel.

The documentary featured staged dramatic scenes in which Thierry Costa played Maurice Ravel, Richard Cowan as Dr. Clovis Vincent and Jacques Dewitt as
Léon Leyritz. Some elements of the film may be reused from an earlier Rhombus production “Ravel”.

The project received three Gemini awards in 2002, best picture editing in a comedy, variety or performing arts program (for David New) and best sound in the same category (for Lou Solakofski, Peter Cook, Goro Koyama, David McCallum, and Jane Tattersall) and best production design (for Ambre Fernandez). It also received awards for best direction at Toronto’s Hot Docs festival and other international documentary film festivals.

Mozartballs

Series consists of scripts, interview scripts, research material and original film and audio elements of a “light-hearted tribute” to Mozart. Directed by Larry Weinstein, the project was also known during production as “Mozart Balls” and “Mozart Lives!”. The documentary interviews eccentric and unique individuals, including a retired Swiss school teacher, an ex-pop musician in Oklahoma who believes her body is inhabited by Mozart’s spirit, an Austrian astronaut who carried a score of “The Magic Flute” and a chocolate Mozartkugein into space
and a computer genius whose software has created a new Mozart cello concerto. Produced by Rhombus Media.

Long Day’s Journey Into Night

Series consists of photographic stills and six large-scale mounted photographs used for the promotion of the 1996 televised production of Eugene O’Neill’s play “Long Day’s Journey Into Night” (part of the television series ‘Great Performances’). Directed by David Wellington, the Pulitzer Prize-winning classic unfolds over the course of a day while the Tyrone family confronts their haunting secrets. James Tyrone, the master of the house is played by William Hutt, while Edmund, the consumptive son is played by Tom McCamus. Morphine-addicted mother Mary is played by Martha Henry while Jamie, the elder alcoholic son is played by Peter Donaldson. Martha Burns appears as Cathleen. Coproduced by Rhombus, CBC and Bravo! Television.

Marcelo Alvarez : In Search of Gardel

Series consists of translations, production notes, research materials and original film and audio elements of the Niv Fichman-directed musical documentary special featuring Marcelo Alvarez, an Argentine accountant, whose meteoric rise to the stage after winning a song contest. In “Marcelo Alvarez : In Search of Gardel”, Alvarez returns to Argentina to perform and record the tango music of legendary crooner, Carlos Gardel. Includes some archival footage. Co-produced by Rhombus, Sony Classical, La Sept Arte and NHK. The film won an award at the International Film and Video Award.

The Lanza Sessions

Series consists of original film elements of “The Lanza Sessions”, a 2000 celebration of the work of popular operatic singer Mario Lanza. Directed by David Mortin, the 55 minute television special features archival footage, interviews with contemporaries and performances by Richard Margison, (as the voice of Lanza), soprano Cassandra Riddle, and Tom Burlinson (portraying Lanza’s friend Frank Sinatra). Co-produced by Rhombus, Lanza Music Ltd. And Chairman Robert Girdwood.

Last Night

Series consists of scripts, production notes, media reviews, production stills and movie posters for the 1998 feature film “Last Night”. Written and directed by Don McKellar, the film follows a cast of characters as they struggle through the petty details and minor complications of the final few hours of existence, trying to arrange the perfect end. Features performances by McKellar himself, David Cronenberg, Sandra Oh, Callum Keith Rennie, Tracey Wright and Sarah Polley. Co-produced by Rhombus, CBC, La Sept Arte and Haut et Court.

Foreign Objects

Series consists of scripts for all six episodes, production notes, media clippings, production stills and original film and audio elements as well as stock footage relating to “Foreign Objects”, a miniseries broadcast on CBC, based on Ken Finkleman’s popular series “The Newsroom”. Finkelman reprises the role of George, a documentary filmmaker, who is forced to confront issues of evil, greed and the human condition (despite his preference for less complex commercially lucrative projects) in a series of six 30 minute episodes which aired on CBC in 2001. Particular material focuses on civil war in Kosovo, Western culture’s fixation on media and… Includes stock footage from CBC, the National Archives and other sources. Co-produced by Rhombus, Showcase Television and the CBC.

Five Days in September (aka See The Music)

Series consists of interview transcripts, musician schedules, original film and audio elements for the ‘reality-style’ documentary exposing the inner workings of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the institution’s efforts in 2004 to launch a new season under a new Maestro, Peter Oundjiian. Directed by Barbara Willis Sweete, the 72 minute documentary features candid footage of celebrity soloists such as YoYo Ma, Emanuel Ax and Renee Fleming as they rehearse, prepare and interact with fans during the week leading up to the premier performance with the orchestra.
