Accrual to the M.G. Vassanji fonds

Accession consists of printed copies of the business email correspondence of M.G. Vassanji. Some correspondence pertains to literary submissions and other administrative matters concerning the operations of TSAR Publications (including correspondence sent and received by Nurjehan Aziz), while the majority of correspondence pertains to Vassanji’s own literary career. Also included in this accession is assorted memorabilia about Vassanji’s career as a writer and awards received, including the Order of Canada and the Giller Prize. These records include newspaper and magazine articles about Vassanji; articles written by Vassanji and published in journals, magazines and newspapers; event programs, notices, flyers and menus; award certificates; and posters.

This Equivocating Self : essays

File consists of a draft manuscript of a collection of essays. Several of these essays appear in “Nowhere, Exactly” to be published in March 2024.

Notebook

File consists of a spiral bound notebook containing research notes and short stories or book chapters written by Vassanji.

Forward : Gandhi : an autobiography

File consists of two drafts of Vassanji’s forward in the book “Gandhi: An Autobiography: The Story of My Experiments with Truth” by Mohandas K. Gandhi. The edition of this book with Vassanji’s forward was published in 2011.

Knowing South Asia Workshop

File consists of correspondence, travel arrangements, workshop program and an interview transcript between Vassanji and two members of the South Asian Studies Council, Yale University.

Introduction : The Street

File consists of two drafts of the introduction, written by Vassanji, to the 2007 edition of Mordecai Richler’s book “The Street.”

The Globe and Mail advertising : “We the undersigned...”

File consists of correspondence, an original published article, and an invoice for a published statement condemning recent attacks on the United Talmud Torah elementary school library in Montreal, published on May 8, 2004. The article lists all people involved or who helped pay for its publication. The file also consists of brief notes from the undersigned as Vassanji organized the statement’s publication and wrote the piece.

File consists of a program and correspondence for Vassanji’s attendance at the festival.

Nostalgia : a novel : draft manuscript

File consists of a clean draft manuscript with the exception of an alternative title, “The Nostalgia Worm,” crossed out and “a novel” added on the title page.

Off-prints : article and interview

File consists of an article titled, “Community as a Fictional Character,” written by Vassanji, published in Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences, vol. 1, no. 1, 1994, and a transcript of an interview with Vassanji for Canadian Literature, autumn 2006.

File consists of several interview questions that include Vassanji’s handwritten answers.

Draft convocation addresses

File consists of annotated drafts of speeches Vassanji gave at convocations including Carleton University, York University, University of Toronto, and McMaster University.

Correspondence : publishers

File consists of records pertaining to the publication of “The Gunny Sack” mainly with Heinemann Educational Books Ltd. and Heinemann International. File also contains publisher reviews of Vassanji’s manuscripts.
