The notebooks in this series include a variety of writing, including general notes, lists, notes pertaining to Crosbie’s writing projects and PhD research, as well as personal writing and drawings. Some items in this series contain loose ephemeral items, notes, letters, and photographs.

Ontario Media Development Corporation / Ontario Film Development Corporation files

Series consists of: film press kits, reports, agreements, meeting minutes, contracts, correspondence, media clippings, business trip itineraries, which document James Weyman's career as a producer and Manager of Industry Initiatives at the Ontario Media Development Corporation (OMDC) (2000-2015) and its predecessor, the Ontario Film Development Corporation (1986-1999).

Ontario Medical Association v. Marilou McPhedran

Series consists of records pertaining to a libel lawsuit brought against Marilou McPhedran by the Ontario Medical Association (OMA) regarding a 2001 article titled "First, do no harm", written by McPhedran for the "Globe and Mail" newspaper. These records document the court appeal of Dr. Anil Mussani, who was found guilty of the sexual abuse of a patient by the College of Physicians and Surgeons, and the OMA's role as intervenor, the nature of McPhedran's response to the lawsuit, and negotiations for the settlement of the case. Included in the series are research and preparatory materials for the lawsuit, some pertaining to McPhedran's work as chair of the Task Force on the Sexual Abuse of Patients, which she headed in 1991 and 2000. The records in this series include legal documents and transcripts; reports; journal, magazine and newspaper articles; correspondence and memoranda.

Open College files

The series consists of personal and administrative files of Open College created and/or accumulated by Margaret Norquay including clippings, student packages, contracts, correspondence, notes, diaries, journals, reports and minutes from various projects and memorabilia documenting her role as its founder and as a professor. Series also includes drafts and scripts for Norquay's course "Ethnic Relations in Canada : Understanding People of Another Culture" and audio recordings, transcripts and notes from interviews conducted by Norquay with various ethnic groups as a part of her course work.

Opus

Series consists of 19 reels of 16mm film, including sets of A/B rolls, optical negative soundtracks and interpositive films for the first production of Rhombus. Directed by Barbara Willis-Sweete, Opus traces the development and performance of a piece of environmental music by Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer. The film received a certificate of merit from the Chicago International Film Festival.

Orchestral scores

Series consists of orchestral scores used by the Rex Battle Orchestra. Music sheets contain the parts for various instruments, sometimes featuring Battle's writing or notes.

Series consists of records pertaining to Mandel’s activities during his tenure as a professor at York University’s Osgoode Hall Law School from 1974 to 2013.

Other William Packer files

Series consists of records created and accumulated by William Packer that are separate from the Crowe dispute files and as such pertain to his academic career both as a student and as a teacher, including his time spent at United College in Manitoba, University of Toronto, City of Toronto Board of Education, and Royal Military College. The records regarding United College mainly address salary negotiations and the emergence of the Canadian Association of University Teachers. The series contains correspondence, newsletters, bulletins, drafts for speeches and interviews, curriculum vitaes, transcripts, certificates, contracts, visas, licenses, permits, and ephemera.

Parole board documentary

Series consists of records created and accumulated by Theresa Burke in her role as a producer for the CBC television program The Fifth Estate. These records pertain to a documentary project that followed prison inmates through their National Parole Board hearings. The records in this series document Burke's research work, the process of selecting subjects for the program, and preparations for filming. Included in this series are interview transcripts, notes, correspondence, production materials, newspaper clippings, parole board reports, audiovisual materials, photographs, forms and applications, and copies of court and prison records.

Pedagogical research and publication files

Series consists of records created or accumulated by Janice Newton as a result of her involvement with the York Assessment Forum and as chief editor of the anthology Voices from the Classroom: Reflections on Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (Garamond, 2001). Records include reports, minutes, correspondence, and other administrative and planning documents. Records also include teaching surveys completed by York faculty members, as well as notes, audio recordings, video recordings, and transcriptions created as a result of faculty focus groups organized and administered by Newton.

Series consists of scripts, production binders, correspondence, production stills and all the major film elements of the feature film, including original footage, release prints (one for the India Film Festival), interpositives, optical sound tracks and trims. Directed by Barbara Willis Sweete, the film covers the course of a weekend’s reunion between two estranged ‘best friends’ : a bright and popular beauty who married her high school sweetheart and became a farm wife and a sensitive ugly-duckling who fled her alcoholic mother and recreated herself to become an opera diva. Together they decipher the fragmented memories of a horrifying event that separated them as children and kept them apart. Co-produced by Rhombus and Odeon Films.

Series consists of greeting cards, postcards, correspondence, personal notebooks, photographs and a guestbook from Ingeborg's art exhibits. Greeting cards express holiday and birthday messages, in addition to remarks on Mohr's 50th wedding anniversary and condolences on Ingeborg's death in 2004. The postcards were sent to Mohr from family and friends with images of European cities such as Dresden, Vienna, Edinburgh, Paris, and Athens, as well as Canadian cities such as Montreal and Vancouver. In addition, the series includes two handwritten personal notebooks by Mohr in German from the 1950s, two notebooks of early poetry, and handwritten correspondence between Mohr and his friends from when he travelled to Canada.

Series consists of records created and accumulated by Peter Flemington in his capacity as a student at the Annenberg School of Communications and as a consultant and freelance filmmaker, producer, director and broadcasting executive. Includes: coursework; workshop materials; consultancy project files; correspondence, research notes, and reports related to an application for a license at the first CRTC hearings on Pay-TV; and three DVD’s featuring highlights of his career.

Also included in this series are files related to his work with Doug Barrett on an independent brief to the CRTC suggesting a model for a multifaith television service which the CRTC could license. This brief formed the foundation for the work subsequently undertaken by the Rosewell Group and the Canadian Interfaith Network.

Series consists of records pertaining to the completion of Crosbie’s PhD in English Literature from the University of Toronto, including her preparation for comprehensive exams and the research and writing of her thesis, “Contextualizing Anne Sexton: confessional process and feminist practice in The Complete Poems". Series consists of twelve photo albums created by Lloyd Mackenzie and seven of his Canadian passports. Photographs document Lloyd Mackenzie's childhood and adolescence in Toronto, as well as some photographs of his parents, family and friends; his military service as a clerk during World War II; his daily life, friendships and living arrangements in Toronto, England and Australia; and his extensive travels within Canada, the United States, Europe, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean and Australia.

Series consists of records pertaining to Rahder’s membership in and involvement with the Planners Network and its Toronto chapter, her participation and presentations at Planners Network and related conferences, and her work to coordinate Planners Network events and conferences. These records include conference materials, conference papers and abstracts, notes, memoranda, newsletters, correspondence and e-mail. Also included in the series are conference materials, papers and publications pertaining to the International Network for Urban Research and Action (INURA).

Series consists of manuscripts, typesets, cover art, research materials, photographic prints and negatives, correspondence and notebooks. Series documents how Rachel Zolf researched, wrote and edited her poetry. Series also contains information about Zolf's efforts to have her work funded and published. In addition, series includes reviews of Zolf's published works. Correspondence includes letters written by or to Rachel Zolf on the subject of her poetry. Correspondents include Di Brandt, Betsy Warland, Beverley Daurio, Nathalie Stephens, Margaret Christakos, M.NourbeSe Philip, Erin Moure and Charles Berstein.

Political and personal photographs

Series consists of amateur and professional photographs taken and accumulated by Jean Augustine during her personal and professional life in Canada. This series documents Augustine's personal and family life in Grenada and Canada from the 1940s through to 2005, including her emigration to Canada, her social activities as a young woman in Toronto, her life as a young mother, social activist, teacher and student.

Photographs also document her early involvement in the 1970s and 1980s in community movements, cultural events, social justice and political organizations, as well as her professional career as an elementary school teacher and principal in the Metropolitan Separate School Board, her activities as part of Premier David Peterson's 'transition team' in 1985 and her work as chair of the Metro Toronto Housing Authority. Events documented include the election campaign of American politician Jesse Jackson, the earliest celebrations of the Caribana parade in Toronto, women's rights events and protests, and local Black History Month celebrations.

Photographs also document Augustine's activities as a federal politician, including her activities on Parliament Hill, her administration of federal committees and the Secretariats of Multiculturalism (later Multiculturalism and Status of Women), as well as her election campaigns (including door-to-door campaigning; fund raising; speeches; debates and promotion), and local activities (including celebrations at her constituency office; round table discussions and meetings with community organizations; annual Christmas parties; summer picnics; community celebrations; banquets; and Remembrance Day ceremonies).

Photographs also document Augustine's extensive travel overseas in the Caribbean, the United States, South America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, Asia, Central Asia and the Far East, both in her official capacity as a politician and cabinet member, and as a tourist and traveler.

Series consists of pro-life literature and other records pertaining to Gentles’ research on bioethical issues, primarily abortion and assisted suicide. Also includes administrative and research records related to the deVeber Institute for Bioethics and Social Research (formerly the Human Life Research Institute), a pro-life think-tank of which Gentles is Vice-President and Research Director. Records in this series document Larry Grossman’s work with the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party as a member of provincial parliament and party leader. Includes: campaign materials; opposition research; polling data; policy papers; debate briefing books and research; press releases; campaign schedules/itineraries; clippings; and party convention delegate reports.

The events covered include the 1977, 1981, 1985 and 1987 Ontario general elections; Grossman’s unsuccessful campaign for leader of the party in January 1985 and his successful campaign in November 1985.

Series consists of project and writing files that are not specifically Open College files, or other named projects. These files are primarily related to Norquay's interests in adult education, cross-cultural interaction and communication, communication styles, diversity training and management styles, and include workshop notes and course handouts, correspondence, guides, exercises and quizzes, assessment tools, reference materials, readings, and reports either written by or accumulated by Norquay.

Project files

Series consists of records pertaining to Maguire’s activities as a dancer, choreographer, teacher and arts organizer. These records, which include grant applications, photographs, letters of agreement, correspondence, proposals and notes, document Maguire’s work as an instructor in dance in the Faculty of Fine Arts at the York University, her independent choreography and dance projects, and her involvement with community arts education and dance instruction.

Public engagement

Series contains documents generated from performances, including educational initiatives, performed primarily in Toronto and tours across Canada and the north-eastern United States. Also, includes work by other choreographers produced by the company. Series consists of programming targeting primary and secondary schools in the form of curricula, teaching materials, educational marketing kits, feedback forms. Majority of records refer to Noondance and Curriculum in Motion educational initiatives.

Documents include itineraries, newspaper clippings, correspondence, programs, press releases, grant applications, contracts, feedback/participant surveys, and lobby displays. Few choreographic notations appear in this series (those that appear are in the Benesh Movement Notation (BWN) style).

Additional material related to the company's public engagement can be found in the correspondence and organisational records series. Aside from lobby displays, research and creative material used to develop repertoires do not appear in this series.

Publication files

Series consists of records created and maintained by Pat Fleisher pertaining to her four art publications: Art Magazine (1969-1982), Artpost (1983-1992), Artfocus (1992-2004), and City Art (2004-2005), as well as her website, Artfocus Online (1996-2009). These records document Fleisher's work in the production of these publications, including magazine printing, article research and creation, procurement of advertisements and subscriptions, and magazine finances. Files in this series consist of correspondence, article drafts, photographs, artist bios and CVs, grant applications, invoices and financial statements, notes, art show notices, and audio cassettes. Also included in this series are copies of Society of Canadian Artists (SCA) newsletters from 1965 to 1968, edited by Fleisher.

Series consists of serial publications in which Alison Pick's poetry and short fiction were published between 1999 and 2010. These publications include "The New Quarterly," "The Fiddlehead," "Arc," "Fireweed," "Contemporary Verse 2," "Exile," "Prairie Fire," and others.

Publications, consulting and conference materials

Series consists of records documenting the scope of Rahder’s work as a planning consultant and academic and her involvement with professional organizations and groups. These records include conference materials, papers and reports written by Rahder, project proposals, technical drawings, photographic slides and reports relating to her consultancy work, research materials, drawings, correspondence and notes.

Published material

Series consists of draft articles, correspondence and reference material related to Lorch's published mathematical research as well as his numerous letters-to-the-editor, speeches and published articles on such subjects as academic freedom; racism, sexism and discrimination in academia; the civil rights movement; the international mathematical community and anti-Soviet bias in the Western scientific community. Also includes some material reviewed and edited by Lorch.

Rahi family videos

Accession consists of home videos documenting Azada Rahi's participation in the Junior Toronto Raptors Dance Pak including rehearsals and performances at the YTV Achievement Awards.

Project and donor(s) contributed description follows: "Around 1994, 9-year old Azada Rahi living in a nearby co-op auditioned at the Cabbagetown Youth Centre to be part of the junior Toronto Raptors Dance Pak. The choreographer was Clarence Ford, who auditioned kids, teens and young adults from all over the city, and ran the Pak once the crew was established. He was a delight to work with, was extremely kind, and was great at keeping so many young people organized and focused.

For Azada, the years she spent in the Pak, encountering Canadian athletes and entertainers were "fun and weird". These tapes are the sole recordings of her dancing that she has had access to. Looking back at the footage proved surprisingly, hilarious, and a chance to reflect on herself as an uninhibited young dancer."

Rahi family

Ravel’s Brain

Series consists of research notes, photographs, correspondence, production notes, film and audio elements of the documentary “Ravel’s Brain”. Written and directed by Larry Weinstein, “Ravel’s Brain” is described as a “musical/visual tone poem” exploring the final five years of composer Maurice Ravel (1875- 1937), who due to the degenerative brain conditions of aphasia and apraxia, was
able to produce music but not write it down or perform it. The project was initiated in early 1998 by Weinstein but was not completed until 2000, due to resistance from the Ravel estate.

Featuring the performances of the WDR (Sinfonieorchester des Westdeutschen Rundfunks) Symphony Orchestra and Radio Choir of Cologne, the film features interviews with Ravel’s colleagues, archival footage of his home in Montfort- l’Amaruy and his birthplace of Basque Ciboure. The bulk of the work was filmed on location in Marrakesh, a source of inspiration to Ravel.

The documentary featured staged dramatic scenes in which Thierry Costa played Maurice Ravel, Richard Cowan as Dr. Clovis Vincent and Jacques Dewitt as
Léon Leyritz. Some elements of the film may be reused from an earlier Rhombus production “Ravel”.

The project received three Gemini awards in 2002, best picture editing in a comedy, variety or performing arts program (for David New) and best sound in the same category (for Lou Solakofski, Peter Cook, Goro Koyama, David McCallum, and Jane Tattersall) and best production design (for Ambre Fernandez). It also received awards for best direction at Toronto’s Hot Docs festival and other international documentary film festivals.

Records of Maura Matesic

Series consists of records of the Canadian Law and Society Association retained by Maura Matesic in her role as treasurer, including: newsletters, conference programs, bylaws, minutes of meetings, financial reports, budgets, and documents dealing with its incorporation, journal, website, committees, and the Task Force on the Canadian Common Law Degree.

Red Violin

Series consists of scripts, multilingual translations, media coverage reports, photographs and the central prop for “The Red Violin”, arguably, Rhombus’ most ambitious and successful production to date. Written by Don McKellar and directed by Francois Girard, The Red Violin features scenes in French, English, Mandarin, Italian and German, requiring significant translation and subtitling.
Filmed on location in Chicheley Hall and Oxford in England, China, Cremona, Italy, Vienna, Austria and Montreal, the film traces the life and travels of the famous ‘red violin’, from its creation in 17th century Italy by the master Nicolo Bussotti (Carlo Cecchi), through it’s exodus from an 18th century Austrian monastery to 19th century Oxford, Cultural Revolution-era China to a Montreal auction house, where an appraiser (Samuel L. Jackson) and conservator (Don McKellar) try to establish its authenticity and provenance.
The film features actors Jean-Luc Bideau, Jason Flemyng, Sylvia Chang, Julian Richings and Colm Feore. Violin solos used in the musical score were performed by Joshua Bell.

The Red Violin received significant critical acclaim. The film swept the 1999 Genie Awards, picking up trophies for art direction (Francois Séguin), cinematography (Alain Dostie), costume design (Renée April), musical score, sound (Claude La Haye, Jocelyn Caron, Bernard Gariépy Strobl, Hans Peter Strobl), best screenplay (Don McKellar and Francois Girard), direction (Froncois Girard) and best motion picture. For the Jutra Awards of 1999, the film also took awards in the areas of art direction, best cinematography, editing (Gaétan Huot), best supporting actor (Colm Feore) score, sound, screenplay, direction, and best film.

It also won the 2000 Oscar for best original musical score (John Corigliano).

Religious Television Associates

Series consists of records created and accumulated by Flemington in his work with Religious Television Associates (RTA). RTA was founded as a production and consultation entity by the United, Anglican and Roman Catholic churches in 1964 and joined for a time – or on a per-project basis – by the Baptist, Presbyterian and Lutheran churches and other faith communities.

Records in this series include: correspondence; meeting minutes; files related to Flemington’s work as a producer on the CTV show Spectrum (1965-1968); research notes, correspondence and briefs related to RTA’s advocacy work on behalf of Interchurch Broadcasting/Interchurch Communication (ICC), including a study on cable television and community; production notes for a radio and television advertising campaign to raise funds for world development work on behalf of the Interchurch Campaign Committee; research and production files related to Flemington’s films on the topic of international development including three films about Southeast Asia for the CBC television show Man Alive: “How Long Does It Take a Tree to Grow Here? (Philippines), “No Way To Say No” (West Irian, Indonesia), and “They’ll Tell Me When the Tread’s Gone” (Malaysian territory in Borneo); research and production files for films about Japan: "Deep Currents Moving" (for the United Church of Canada) and "To Remember the Fallen" (for CBC’s Man Alive); correspondence, research notes, and draft scripts for two films about Brazil co-produced between RTA and Danchurchaid: “The Journey: From Faith to Action” and “People of No Interest”.

Also included are records related to the founding of Agency Film Seminar, an international group of filmmakers and producers for church agencies, brought together by RTA, Danchurchaid (Denmark), the World Council of Churches, and the World Association for Christian Communication. Flemington was the founding secretary/communicator.

Remembrance files

Series consists of correspondence relating to Hans Mohr’s death, photographs of his personal library, a collection of poems entitled Memento mori: paintings and poetry published after Mohr’s death, and a book of friends and family’s notes from the funerals of Hans and Ingeborg Mohr.

Research

Series contains proposals, grant applications, reports, data, and administrative documents related to James’ research projects. A significant portion of the series pertains to the following two projects:

The “Bridging the Solitudes” project ([2001?]-2005) examined the racial, ethnic, cultural and financial barriers faced in post-secondary education by students from traditionally marginalized groups. Thirty students participated at York University and Seneca College during the project and regularly met during the ‘common hour’ to discuss their ongoing experiences, expectations, and aspirations for university and life.

The “Racism, Violence and Health Project” (2002-2007) was a $1.25 million study funded by the Canadian Institute for Health Research. Over 900 individuals participated in the study through surveys, in-depth interviews, two-year micro-ethnographies, annual community forums, and smaller community meetings. The goal of the project was to determine perceptions of both global and racism-related stress in the Indigenous African Nova Scotian community, the Caribbean Canadian community in Toronto, and the African immigrant community in Alberta; and to document the first voice accounts of Black men, their families, and communities about their experiences of violence (including the violence of racism). The research team comprised of Dr. Wanda Thomas Bernand (leader), Dr. Dave Este, Dr. Carl James, Dr. Akua Benjamin, Dr. Carol Amaratunga, Dr. Fred Wien, research trainees, and collaborators (including the Health Association of African Canadians, Nova Scotia Association of Black Social Workers, Victoria Road United Baptist Church, Women's Health in Women's Hands, Tropicana Community Services, Calgary African Community Association, Calgary Immigrant Aid Society, Edmonton Immigrant Association, Calgary Catholic Immigration Society, and Calgary African Caribbean Advisory Council).

Series consists of material related to Hoffert's technological and theoretical interests including material pertaining to work begun at the National Research Council on music created using computer technology and carried out with a number of companies concerned with audio data and interactive technology. It contains business and research plans, copyright and legal materials, correspondence, reports, memoranda and other material for companies including McLeyvier, DHJ Research, Marquis Music, Time Out for Fun and the Cultech Research Centre, a project based at York University intended to investigate digital content use by residents in a housing development in suburban Toronto.

Research and lecture notes

Series contains notes for book projects ('Hegel's development', 'Phenomenology of spirit,'), as well as notes for lectures for a seven year seminar on 'Phenomenology', and related Hegel research.

Research and writing files

Series consists of records pertaining to Jarrell's various academic research and writing projects, including his book "Educating the Neglected Majority". Records include notes, lists, statistics, draft articles and manuscripts, bibliographies, copies of membership lists and directories, reproductions of archival records, publications, photographs, and Jarrell's research index cards, organized by research subject. Also included in this series are textbooks written and used by Jarrell to teach his classes at York University.

Series consists of material that documents Tenney's ongoing academic and professional interest in the field of music including material that documents his years as a professor of music at York University. It includes research material consisting of clippings, notes, drafts of articles and other material related to the the work of fellow composers such as John Cage, Edgard Varese, Harry Partch as well as Conlon Noncarrow. It also contains material that documents his interest in musical theory including drafts of articles written by Tenney as well as material related to his books "META-HODOS : a phenomenology of 20th century musical materials and an approach to the study of form" and "A history of 'consonance' and 'dissonance.'"
