Mr. Goudas Past & Present

A video cassette documenting the story of Spyridon “Peter” Goudas, creator of “Mr. Goudas Foods” and his involvement and friendship with Kenneth Shah and Caribana. Contents of the tape include: The Early Years, Arrive in Canada, Starting a Business, the Famous 813 Club, Variety of Commercials, the Caribana Story, and Scenes from 1975 & 1990 parade. Kenneth Shah is interviewed throughout the tape.

A sound recording created by Kenneth Shah. The recording has Kenneth Shah detailing his last lunch at home with his family in Trinidad, before his emigration to Canada. Shah also speaks about his mother, as at the time of the recording it was his mother's birthday. Also heard on the recording is Shah's father, his mother, and his eldest sister wishing him well on his travels.

The original box read: “A recording made on 5-9-1965 on the occasion of my mothers 52nd birthday and my departure to Canada at 117 Coffee St. San Fernando Trinidad. Faiz Shah.”

Fonds consists of the administrative records of the Caribbean Cultural Committee created and accumulated by Kenneth Shah in his role as a founding member, including material such as correspondence; band registration forms and regulations for band competitions; constitution drafts; financial documents; meeting minutes; Shah’s sketches for parade costume designs; and program proposals. Other materials include issues of newspapers and magazines that provided media coverage of the Caribana Festival each year; Shah’s personal photo and film collection documenting Caribana and other Carnival festivals in Trinidad and Tobago, Toronto, Montreal, and New York; Shah’s mas bands throughout the years; and promotional material for Caribana such as brochures, pamphlets, festival guides, event programmes, and flyers.

Caribana working files

Series consists of the working files belonging to Shah including materials from the Caribbean Cultural Committee, a non-profit organization in charge of planning and running Caribana each year from 1967-2006. Files include material created and accumulated by Shah in his role as mas producer and bandleader for Caribana, including: correspondence, band registration forms, schedules of events, and documents to organize the festival's various mas camps each year.

Promotional literature

Series consists of promotional materials for Caribana events throughout the years, Carnival events in Trinidad and Tobago, as well as other events Shah hosted or attended in both Canada and the Caribbean. Files include flyers, newspapers and magazines catered for the West Indian community in Canada and the Caribbean.

Photographs

Series consists of photographs belonging or taken by Shah. They include photographs and negatives of the Caribana mas parades and costumes created by Shah throughout the years, as well as other Carnivals and Mas parades across Canada, New York, and Trinidad and Toabgo. The series also consists of personal photographs of Shah’s family and friends.

Moving image recordings

Series consists of videocassettes and film reels documenting Caribana throughout the years. Film reels also document Shah’s life and subsequent immigration from Trinidad and Tobago to Canada.
