Fonds consists of records pertaining to the personal and professional activities of Karen Connelly. These records include manuscripts, in various states of development, for Connelly’s published writing, particularly her books "One room in a castle" (1995), "The border surrounds us" (2000), “The lizard cage” (2005), and “Burmese lessons” (2009), as well as draft poems and stories. Journals from Connelly’s travels through Asia in the mid-to-late 1990s are also part of the fonds , as are personal journals kept between 1984 and 2011, correspondence sent and received, travel and personal photographs, literary memorabilia, and notes for Connelly’s speaking engagements and lectures.

File consists of contracts, agreements and correspondence mostly pertaining to Connelly's work as a writer-in-residence, a writing instructor and to the commissioning and publication of her writing.

File includes e-mail correspondence exchanged between Connelly and Hannah McGregor, Marlene Goldman, Smaro Kamboureli and Sherene Razack, who all participated in a colloquium titled "Desire, empathy, vulnerability: representations of the 'foreign' in Canadian women's writing".

File includes correspondence pertaining to the publication of "The lizard cage" and Connelly's Orange Broadband Prize for New Writers win in 2007.

Text of Villa Gillet speech

File pertains to a roundtable held at Villa Gillet in France, at which Connelly presented a talk entitled "Lustful reading vs. an ocean of shit". A French translation of this text is included in the file, as are the English translations of the texts of other presenters (Pedro Rosa Mendes, Jean-Yves Cendrey).

Accession 2006-025

Accession consists of material that documents Connelly's personal and professional life and includes notes and drafts related to published and unpublished poems and short stories as well as complete drafts of her poetry collections 'Grace and poison,' 'This brighter prison,' 'The disorder of love,' and 'The small words in my body,' her travel memoirs 'One room in a castle' and 'Touch the dragon' and her novel 'The lizard cage.' It also includes personal correspondence consisting of letters received by Connelly as well as copies of letters sent by her to friends and family, which were subsequently used in the writing of her works of travel literature. The fonds includes copies of letters of received from Margaret Atwood, Timothy Findley, Dale Zieroth, Don Coles, Michael Redhill, Nino Ricci, Nancy Holmes, Libby Oughton, Silver Donald Cameron, Susan Swan and Steven Heighton, among others. It also includes Connelly's personal journals for the years 1984 to 2003 in which she documents events in her day to day life, her thoughts on literature and art, ideas and sketches for stories and poems and in which she recorded her observations based on her extensive travels through Thailand, Burma, Spain, France, Greece and Canada.
