Fonds consists of material related to Virginia Rock's research for her doctoral dissertation and other academic writing pertaining to the Twelve Southern Agrarians. Records include research notes and index cards, photocopies of newspaper clippings, book reviews, literary criticism, journal articles, and photocopies of material written by or about the Southern Agrarians regarding their lives and work, as well as their correspondence with Rock. The fonds also contains Rock's personal and professional correspondence, drafts of Rock's final dissertation and articles, records concerning her involvement with the Canadian Women's Studies Association, as well as materials pertaining to Rock's work as a professor at York University, including information about Stong College, syllabi, course kits and reading lists, information about symposiums she attended, and items relating to her work as an instructor and advisor for the Graduate Women's Studies Programme. Also included in the fonds are records pertaining to Rock's experience teaching American literature as a Fulbright visiting professor at Jagiellonian University in Krakow between 1962 and 1964. These records, which include photographs, correspondence and memorabilia, document Rock's activities while in Poland as well as her return visits to Poland in later years and her general interest in the country. An issue of the Polish magazine "Ameryka," featuring an article about Virginia Rock, has been added to Special Collections; an English translation is available in the fonds.

File consists of a letter sent to Rock pertaining to arrangements for the visits of John Steinbeck and Edward Albee to Krakow and Warsaw in Poland. Included are Polish newspaper clippings pertaining to Steinbeck's visit, including one featuring a photograph of Rock with Steinbeck.

Jagiellonian University 1364-1964 : doctorates honoris causa

Item is a publication produced for a ceremony issuing honorary doctorates from Jagiellonian University's Academy of Medicine and College of Agriculture on the occasion of the university's 600th anniversary. It consists of letters addressed to each recipient of a honorary degree, written in English. Included is an invitation to the event, written in Latin.

File consists of photographs taken by Rock in Poland. Included are photographs of street scenes in Krakow, the Wawel Castle, the Jewish cemetery in Krakow, a Juvenalia student celebration and parade (1963), the Lajokonik (May 1964), 600th anniversary celebrations at Jagiellonian University, Robert Kennedy visiting Jagiellonian University in 1964, the American Embassy, and buildings in Warsaw.

File consists of photographs taken by Rock in Krakow, Poland. Included are photographs of the Rynek Glowny, St. Mary's Church, Slowacki Theatre, the town hall, the old wall and other street scenes.

Photograph of Jerzy Beres and art show programme

File consists of a photograph of Jerzy Beres with one of his sculptures, taken by Rock, as well as a programme for his show held at Galeria Krzysztofory in Krakow in 1964. Photograph annotated in pen by Rock on verso: "Jerzy Beres in his apt. His design. (An American sculptor introduced me)."

File consists of photographs of Rock while living in Poland and teaching at the Jagiellonian University between 1962 and 1964. Photographs mainly depict Rock, friends and colleagues at social gatherings, as well as city scenes and buildings in Krakow. Some items in this file have been annotated on verso by Rock to identify people and/or events depicted in the image.

Kartoniki : z obrazami liczbowymi

Item is an educational card game designed to teach children how to count, accompanied by an instruction booklet written in Polish and a handwritten note written in English explaining how to use the game. Cards feature illustrations of acorns, squirrels, houses, cats, balls of yarn, rabbits, carrots, green circles and dogs.

Polish stamps

File consists of first-day covers featuring cachets and stamps issued by the Polish government, collected by Rock. Also included in the file are extra copies of unused stamps, including some featuring illustrations of cats by Janusz Grabianski (1964).

File consists of clippings of newspaper articles about or featuring Rock, including articles about her return to the United States after teaching in Poland and a notice pertaining to the awarding of her honorary doctorate from York University in 1994.

Interview with John Kirejczyk, Toronto, Ontario

Item is a text translated from Polish of an interview conducted by Jozef Kurdybelski with a Polish immigrant to Canada, John Kirejczyk, in Toronto on 20 January 1972. The interview details Kirejczyk's decision to leave Poland and his experience in Canada.

American Studies Seminar materials

File consists of records pertaining to Rock's participation in this American Studies seminar on "The testing of democracy: America between 1929 and 1945", held on 12-31 July 1964 in Falkenstein, Germany. Rock taught the literature section on the theme of social protest and reaffirmation. Included in the file is a seminar pamphlet, student assignments, a list of lectures given by Rock, a list of participants, and a report written by Rock about the seminar.

Letter from Virginia Rock en route to Poland

Item is a carbon copy of an unaddressed letter written by Rock while sailing from the United States to Copenhagen, on her way to Poland. The letter consists of Rock's detailed descriptions of life on the ship and the people she encountered. It is likely that this is a letter to her parents, as she addresses her father in the body of the letter.

Articles by Virginia Rock about Poland

File consists of clippings of a five-part series written by Rock about her return to Poland during her sabbatical year, published in Stong College's newspaper, The Walrus, in 1974. Also included in a copy of Rock's article, published in Entre Nous, about her trip to Poland in 2014, when she reconnected with her former students from Jagiellonian University, where she taught in 1962-1964.

File consists of draft versions of this paper written by Rock for the 2004 Hawaii International Conference on Arts and Humanities, as well as e-mail correspondence from Esther Shannon, Wendy Robbins and Thelma McCormack regarding the death of Carolyn Heilbrun and e-mail exchanged between Rock and Janice Newton about the abstract for this paper. Included in the file is a paper by Thelma McCormack entitled "Feminism after fifty" (1993), an untitled paper, handwritten notes, and articles about Carolyn Heilbrun.

File pertains to Rock's position on the executive of the CWSA as treasurer between 1995 and 1998. These records include e-mail correspondence, conference planning materials and programmes, financial statements, a preliminary 1998 post-conference report, an Association constitution, executive meeting agendas, Association restructuring reports, proposals and minutes pertaining to the Association's annual meetings.

File pertains to Rock's participation in a panel discussion entitled "Place vs. region in the Southern imagination", part of the American Studies Association conference held in Memphis, Tennessee, in October 1981. Included in the file is correspondence exchanged between Rock, the panel chair Sarah M. Howell, Peter W. Dowell, Robert White and Elizabeth Evans, and numerous annotated versions of her conference paper and related notes. A copy of Robert White's conference paper is also included in the file as well as an overview of the panel's subject matter.
