Writing and research files

Series consists of recordings pertaining to Doob’s research and scholarship interest in medieval studies, dance, and medicine. Series contains interview transcripts and notes, manuscripts, notes, drafts and publications, lectures, grant applications, research-related photographs, and reference material including dance programmes.

A significant portion of the series pertains to the National Ballet of Canada including research material for over thirty repertoires; interview material with Rudolf Nureyev, Celia Franca, Karen Kain, Erik Bruhn, James Kudelka, Rex Harrington, Dominique Dumais, and Glen Tetley; and the manuscripts of Karen Kain and Rex Harrington’s autobiography drafts.

Series also includes the draft manuscript of ‘Nebauchadnezzar’s Children: Conventions of Madness in Middle English Literature,’ and research material related to labyrinths in the middle ages and Chaucer.

Project and donor contributed description follows: "Sometime between 1987 and 1988, it's the summer season and the Jabbar family welcomes uncles and aunts over for a visit to Canada, staying at their apartment in Scarborough, ON. Family was always welcome at the Jabbar household and they are happy and willing to stay for weeks at a time despite the small space. The footage shows how multigenerational the gatherings are, which included S's grandmother who recently came to live with the family."

Project and donor contributed description follows: "In the Javeed family’s apartment in Scarborough ON, two boys aged between 3 and 7 create a video letters to their grandmother who resides overseas in India. Both boys are born and live in Canada. The videos document shifts in communication technologies, at a time prior to the use of communication apps like WhatsApp, used to keep in touch with family. Scarborough was quite diverse by the early 2000s, and the boys generally felt connected to their peers, although their mother remembers they had experienced racism and some issues at school. She attests that they grew up differently than she did as a first generation immigrant, wherein she felt like an outsider in Toronto in the early eighties. The family had a lot of discussions as they were growing up about these issues, and ensured the boys were familiar with current affairs."

Accession consists of home videos documenting Azada Rahi's participation in the Junior Toronto Raptors Dance Pak including rehearsals and performances at the YTV Achievement Awards.

Project and donor(s) contributed description follows: "Around 1994, 9-year old Azada Rahi living in a nearby co-op auditioned at the Cabbagetown Youth Centre to be part of the junior Toronto Raptors Dance Pak. The choreographer was Clarence Ford, who auditioned kids, teens and young adults from all over the city, and ran the Pak once the crew was established. He was a delight to work with, was extremely kind, and was great at keeping so many young people organized and focused.

For Azada, the years she spent in the Pak, encountering Canadian athletes and entertainers were "fun and weird". These tapes are the sole recordings of her dancing that she has had access to. Looking back at the footage proved surprisingly, hilarious, and a chance to reflect on herself as an uninhibited young dancer."

Series consists of records pertaining to Jarrell's work as a professor and administrator at York University. Series consists of records pertaining to Jarrell's various academic research and writing projects, including his book "Educating the Neglected Majority". Records include notes, lists, statistics, draft articles and manuscripts, bibliographies, copies of membership lists and directories, reproductions of archival records, publications, photographs, and Jarrell's research index cards, organized by research subject. Also included in this series are textbooks written and used by Jarrell to teach his classes at York University.

Correspondence

Series consists of Jarrell's professional correspondence and memoranda, including incoming letters and copies of his outgoing correspondence. These records pertain to Jarrell's work as a York University faculty member, his research and writing projects, his work as the editor of "HSTC Bulletin" (later "Scientia Canadensis"), and his participation as a member of the Canadian Science and Technology Historical Association (CSTHA). Some items in this series are photocopies, and some items have been marked according to subject by Martha Jarrell.

Series contains textual records and photographs pertaining to Sternberg's personal life, including medical information and personal correspondence. Included in the series is a file of Sternberg's correspondence with Canadian experimental artist and art educator Michael Fernandes.

Activism files

Series consists of records created or accumulated by Sternberg in the course of her political activities. The series contains materials relating to Sternberg's arts education and feminist activism, as well as a file containing Association for Film Art records. Series is comprised of textual records, photographs, videocassettes, a compact disc, and a poster.

Writing files

Series consists of draft and published copies of articles, interviews, and book chapters written or co-written by Barbara Sternberg. Also included are materials relating to Sternberg's Cinema Canada column, "On Experimental Film," as well as documents pertaining to an unrealized anthology on Canadian experimental film, and several photographs.

Professional and professorial files

Series consists primarily of textual records documenting Sternberg's professorial and professional careers. These records include curation and course proposals, notes, and ephemera; resumes; conference materials; interviews; research; copies, typescripts, and drafts of published and unpublished works; screening, talks, and tour records; writings related to screening introductions; exhibition records; film festival programs and publications; posters; and film periodicals and newsletters. Also included are materials pertaining to Sternberg's work with the Community Arts Centre, a selection of published works by or belonging to Sternberg, and a copy of George Clark's essay "To the Distant Observer: On the Films of Barbara Sternberg." In addition to textual records, this series includes posters, DVDs, photographs, and 35mm slides.

Filmmaking and project files

Series consists of records created or accumulated by Sternberg in the process of her activities as an experimental filmmaker, performer, and artist. Records include project files on complete and incomplete works, including but not limited to "A Story," "Transitions," "Like a Dream That Vanishes," and "Beating," and consist of notes, scripts, shot lists, research materials, grant applications, and correspondence. This series is primarily comprised of 35mm slides and photographs of varying dimensions. The series also includes multiple moving image formats, as well as an envelope of pressed leaves and a box of cloth figures.

Audio-visual materials

Series consists of: audio-visual marketing material for the OMDC; compilation videos of short films funded by the Al Waxman Calling Card Program; unedited footage of the International Film Financing event at the Toronto International Film Festival, 2009; a collection of short and feature films sent to Weyman as co-creator of the Al Waxman Calling Card Program and as Manager of Industry at OMDC. Series also includes taped recordings of episodes of the television show "Wojeck," produced by Weyman's father, Ronald, and a recording of the made-for-television movie, "Wojeck: Out of the Fire."

Ryerson University teaching material

Series consists of teaching material, including course-handouts and administrative material, related to James Weyman's appointment as an instructor at Ryerson University's School of Radio and Television Arts. Series includes "pitch books" created by students in BRD044: Business Aspects of Independent Television Production, which are detailed proposals for independent television programs presented to industry players at the "Annual Independent Television Proposal Competition."

Ontario Media Development Corporation / Ontario Film Development Corporation files

Series consists of: film press kits, reports, agreements, meeting minutes, contracts, correspondence, media clippings, business trip itineraries, which document James Weyman's career as a producer and Manager of Industry Initiatives at the Ontario Media Development Corporation (OMDC) (2000-2015) and its predecessor, the Ontario Film Development Corporation (1986-1999).

Notebooks

Series consists of personal notebooks and day planners which document Weyman's career at the Ontario Media Development Corporation.

Research

Series contains proposals, grant applications, reports, data, and administrative documents related to James’ research projects. A significant portion of the series pertains to the following two projects:

The “Bridging the Solitudes” project ([2001?]-2005) examined the racial, ethnic, cultural and financial barriers faced in post-secondary education by students from traditionally marginalized groups. Thirty students participated at York University and Seneca College during the project and regularly met during the ‘common hour’ to discuss their ongoing experiences, expectations, and aspirations for university and life.

The “Racism, Violence and Health Project” (2002-2007) was a $1.25 million study funded by the Canadian Institute for Health Research. Over 900 individuals participated in the study through surveys, in-depth interviews, two-year micro-ethnographies, annual community forums, and smaller community meetings. The goal of the project was to determine perceptions of both global and racism-related stress in the Indigenous African Nova Scotian community, the Caribbean Canadian community in Toronto, and the African immigrant community in Alberta; and to document the first voice accounts of Black men, their families, and communities about their experiences of violence (including the violence of racism). The research team comprised of Dr. Wanda Thomas Bernand (leader), Dr. Dave Este, Dr. Carl James, Dr. Akua Benjamin, Dr. Carol Amaratunga, Dr. Fred Wien, research trainees, and collaborators (including the Health Association of African Canadians, Nova Scotia Association of Black Social Workers, Victoria Road United Baptist Church, Women's Health in Women's Hands, Tropicana Community Services, Calgary African Community Association, Calgary Immigrant Aid Society, Edmonton Immigrant Association, Calgary Catholic Immigration Society, and Calgary African Caribbean Advisory Council).

Series contains drafts, manuscripts, and correspondence pertaining to the publication of authored and edited books and book chapters by James. A significant portion of the material focuses on “Seeing Ourselves: Exploring Race, Ethnicity & Culture” (1989) which uses a collection of personal comments and essays, written by students from a wide variety of ethnic backgrounds, to examine what it means to participate in the cultural and ethnic "mosaic" that comprises contemporary Canada) and “Life at the Intersection: Community, Class, and Schooling” (2012) which examines schooling and the education experience of youth in the Jane and Finch neighbourhood. Series contains documents related to James' professional interactions (community service, honours and awards, and correspondence) and professorial engagement (course development; graduate student supervision on topics such urban education, sports, practitioner research, and race and diversity; and university service).

His community service includes involvement with the Anti-Discriminatory Advisory Group; UNICEF: discrimination against ethnic minorities, immigrants, and indigenous peoples; Toronto District School Board (TDSB); Toronto Police Services; and the Youth Challenge Fund.

Professorial documents include syllabi, lecture notes, proposals, letters of recommendation, and submitted thesis and dissertations. Writing and related files

Records in this series document the wide scope of Gilbert’s writing projects and pertain in particular to his published books, “How to Win an Argument”, “Coalescent Argumentation”, “Office Party” and “Yellow Angel”, as well as unpublished novels, screenplays and stories, his unpublished textbook “Discovering Logic”, and his academic writing in the area of argumentation theory and gender and transgender theory. These records include draft manuscripts, screenplays, articles and stories as well as related correspondence, notes and research materials, publishing contracts, royalty statements, copies of published articles, and articles about Gilbert’s work.

Teaching files

Series consists of files documenting Gilbert’s work and activities as a lecturer and professor of philosophy at the University of Toronto and York University, as an undergraduate program director and administrator in the Department of Philosophy at York University, and as a speaker on the subject of cross dressing and transgender theory. Files pertaining to Gilbert’s consultancy work (through his company Effective Dispute Management) and talks on argumentation theory are also part of this series. Records in this series include course materials, lecture notes, notes, correspondence, memoranda, presentation slides, grant application materials, newsletters, enrollment statistics, course lists and calendars.

Student papers and notes

Series consists of Gilbert’s papers and notes from undergraduate courses taken at the City University of New York (Hunter College) and from his graduate studies at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo and the University of Waterloo. Also included in the series are personal ephemera from this period and copies of letters pertaining to the formation of the journal “Telos” at SUNY Buffalo.

Series consists of records pertaining to the research, organization and writing of Barndt’s book “VIVA! Community Arts and Popular Education in the Americas”. These records document the involvement of project partners, as well as the funding for and editing of the book. Records in these files are correspondence, e-mail, notes, proposals, pamphlets and brochures, video and audio recordings, papers, reports, and manuscripts.

Tomasita project files and audiovisual material

Series consists of records pertaining to research, writing and editing for two book projects by Barndt, Women Working the NAFTA Food Chain (1999) and Tangled Routes: Women, Work and Globalization on the Tomato Trail (2002). The records in this series document Barndt’s primary research including interviews with Mexican agriculture workers and managers, academics, and workers and managers in the grocery and fast food industries. Records in this series include audio cassettes of interviews, video recordings, annotated interview transcripts, book manuscripts and reader feedback, correspondence and memoranda, as well as secondary research materials including articles, reports and papers.

Series consists of thematic research files accumulated and organized by Barndt pertaining to education-related subjects including indigenous education, environmental education, feminist pedagogy, anti-racism education, gender and development, participatory research, popular economics, labour education, sexual diversity and curriculum diversity. Nicaragua literacy files

Series consists of research materials accumulated by Barndt pertaining to popular education and literacy in Nicaragua under the Sandinista government. Included in the series are reports, papers and statistics from the Nicaraguan Ministry of Education, as well as notes and non-government publications.

Four Shelter project files

Series consists of records pertaining to the work of Rahder and Associates for this project on behalf of women’s shelters in Durham Region and the Counties of Peterborough, Victoria, Haliburton, and Northumberland to identify under-served and marginalized women in their communities. Records in this series include proposals, correspondence, a contract, notes, meeting agendas, questionnaires, budgets, progress reports, research materials, training materials, executive summaries, strategic plans, and the project’s final report. Also included are records pertaining to the creation of a facilitator’s guide by Rahder and Associates for a YMCA anti-racist training program.

Publications, consulting and conference materials

Series consists of records documenting the scope of Rahder’s work as a planning consultant and academic and her involvement with professional organizations and groups. These records include conference materials, papers and reports written by Rahder, project proposals, technical drawings, photographic slides and reports relating to her consultancy work, research materials, drawings, correspondence and notes.

Planners Network files

Series consists of records pertaining to Rahder’s membership in and involvement with the Planners Network and its Toronto chapter, her participation and presentations at Planners Network and related conferences, and her work to coordinate Planners Network events and conferences. Series consists of video recordings of Crosbie appearing on a variety of television programs in promotion of her books or as a guest panelist, as well as audio recordings of radio interviews with or literary readings by Crosbie. Included in the series are audio recordings of her interview with Al Purdy in January 2000.

Series consists of records pertaining to Crosbie’s career as a writer, reviewer and editor. Records include draft manuscripts, poems and articles, research materials, page proofs, notes, invoices, correspondence, speaking notes, programmes, posters and photographs. These records document the writing, publication and promotion of Crosbie’s books of poetry, prose and non-fiction, including Miss Pamela’s Mercy (1992), The Girl Wants To (1993), VillainElle (1994), Pearl (1995), Paul’s Case (1997), Click: Becoming Feminists (1997), Queen Rat (1998), Dorothy L’Amour (1999), Missing Children (2003), Liar (2006), Life Is About Losing Everything (2012) and Where Did You Sleep Last Night (2015), as well as her writing for newspapers, magazines and literary journals. Series consists of notebooks, day planners and sketchbooks created and/or used by Crosbie, as well as a number of calendars and an address book. The notebooks in this series include a variety of writing, including general notes, lists, notes pertaining to Crosbie’s writing projects and PhD research, as well as personal writing and drawings. Some items in this series contain loose ephemeral items, notes, letters, and photographs.

Records of Maura Matesic

Series consists of records of the Canadian Law and Society Association retained by Maura Matesic in her role as treasurer, including: newsletters, conference programs, bylaws, minutes of meetings, financial reports, budgets, and documents dealing with its incorporation, journal, website, committees, and the Task Force on the Canadian Common Law Degree.

Photographs

Series consists of personal and professional photographs taken or compiled by Galloway over the course of his life. Subjects include promotional photographs of Galloway and his various musical projects, gig photographs, travel images, photographs of family and friends, and other subjects.

Sheet music and other material

Series consists of sheet music, scores, musical instruction books, and other related material created or compiled by Galloway over the course of his career.

General correspondence

Series consists of personal and professional correspondence, created or compiled by Galloway over the course of his life.

Contracts

Series consists primarily of contracts created throughout the duration of Galloway's career as a performing artist, booking agent and festival administrator. Series also includes some correspondence pertaining to contracts, as well as miscellaneous notes, tax records, and other material. Some overlap exists between this series and the Working Life series.

Working life

Series consists of records pertaining to the career of Jim Galloway, including those related to his work as a teacher, touring Jazz musician, radio host, booking agent and Toronto Jazz festival co-founder and administrator. Records include notes, correspondence, promotional material, financial records, festival and gig memorabilia, set lists and song lyrics, records related to specific creative projects, various music union records, draft articles, award documentation, records pertaining to Galloway's agent and record label, grant applications, and other material.

Early life and personal records

Series consists of records pertaining to Jim Galloway's early life in Scotland, as well as personal records created throughout his life. Records include notes, sketches and other documents from Galloway's early childhood education and tenure at the Glasgow School of Art, personal notes and correspondence, travel records, date books, passports and immigration records, and other material. Series does not contain records pertaining to Galloway's early musical projects in Scotland, which can be found in the Working Life and Photographs series.

Correspondence

Series consists of personal and professional correspondence between Eric Trist and a number of individuals, as well as correspondence created or received by Beulah Trist about the life and work of Eric Trist.

Teaching records

Series consists of lecture notes, syllabi, reading lists, articles, and other materials pertaining to courses taught by Trist over the course of his career as an academic.

Tavistock Institute records

Series consists of records related to the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations, of which Eric Trist was a founding member. Includes Tavistock publications and histories, notes and clippings by and about Tavistock members, and correspondence and other material pertaining to volume one of The Social Engagement of Social Science: A Tavistock Anthology, (University of Pennsylvania Press, 1990).

Writing and project files

Series consists of publications, presentation scripts, notes and other writings authored or co-authored by Eric Trist, bibiliographies of Trist's and others' works, and audio recordings of Trist and of conversations between Trist and Howard Perlmutter. Many of the publications in this series were used as source material for the book Social Engagement of Social Science: A Tavistock Anthology, edited by Trist (Tavistock, 1990). In such cases, this has been noted at the file level.

Early life and biographical records

Series consists of records pertaining to Trist's early life, education and biography. Early life records include family photographs, elementary school records, student records from Cambridge and Yale Universities, drawings and poetry created by Trist, and other material. Biographical records include: writings about Trist by others; curricula vitae; records related to Trist's honorary LLD from York University; obituaries and memorial records; and records pertaining to Trist's biography, Behavior, Technology, and Organizational Development: Eric Trist and the Tavistock Institute, by Richard Trahair (Transaction, 2015).

Photographs

Series consists mainly of photographs of, or accumulated by, Drache.

Writing and project files

Series consists of records pertaining to Drache’s academic writing and research project work. These records include drafts and published copies of his writing for journals, books and other publications, research and subject files on political economics, free trade and globalization, project files for initiatives undertaken while director of the Robarts Centre for Canadian Studies, and files pertaining to his research about Harold Innis and his role in the organization of Innis centenary activities held in 1994. Also included in this series are correspondence, conference materials, notebooks, proposals and grant applications.

Teaching files

Series consists of records pertaining to Drache’s work as a professor of political science at York University and as a visiting professor at the University of Toronto and McMaster University. These records are course materials including syllabi, course kits and lecture notes, as well as samples of his students’ research papers and other course work, CVs, correspondence and a proposal.

Correspondence

Series consists of Drache’s incoming and outgoing correspondence, mostly pertaining to his academic writing and his work as an instructor at York University and director of the Robarts Centre for Canadian Studies. Some personal correspondence is also part of this series.
