Fonds consists of the administrative records of the Caribbean Cultural Committee created and accumulated by Kenneth Shah in his role as a founding member, including material such as correspondence; band registration forms and regulations for band competitions; constitution drafts; financial documents; meeting minutes; Shah’s sketches for parade costume designs; and program proposals. Other materials include issues of newspapers and magazines that provided media coverage of the Caribana Festival each year; Shah’s personal photo and film collection documenting Caribana and other Carnival festivals in Trinidad and Tobago, Toronto, Montreal, and New York; Shah’s mas bands throughout the years; and promotional material for Caribana such as brochures, pamphlets, festival guides, event programmes, and flyers.

Photographs

Series consists of photographs belonging or taken by Shah. They include photographs and negatives of the Caribana mas parades and costumes created by Shah throughout the years, as well as other Carnivals and Mas parades across Canada, New York, and Trinidad and Toabgo. The series also consists of personal photographs of Shah’s family and friends.

File consists of a range of photographs documenting Caribana mas parades throughout the years, and personal photographs of Shah including a visit to Stonehenge dating 30/6/57.

Jamboree ‘58

File consists of photo negatives of Shah attending the 9th Annual World Scout Jamboree held in England. It includes Shah and friends visiting tourist attractions.

Trinidad Carnival

File consists of photo negatives of Shah in Trinidad attending Carnival, including Carnival costume.

Shah personal photos

File consists of personal photos of Shah with family and friends, including a visit to Hampstead in 1963, and Shah’s first marriage in 1970.

Moving image recordings

Series consists of videocassettes and film reels documenting Caribana throughout the years. Film reels also document Shah’s life and subsequent immigration from Trinidad and Tobago to Canada.

Ken Shah home recording

A sound recording created by Kenneth Shah. The recording has Kenneth Shah detailing his last lunch at home with his family in Trinidad, before his emigration to Canada. Shah also speaks about his mother, as at the time of the recording it was his mother's birthday. Also heard on the recording is Shah's father, his mother, and his eldest sister wishing him well on his travels.

The original box read: “A recording made on 5-9-1965 on the occasion of my mothers 52nd birthday and my departure to Canada at 117 Coffee St. San Fernando Trinidad. Faiz Shah.”

File consists of photographs documenting the Caribana mas parade in downtown Toronto between 1967-1972. File also includes photographs of costumes made by Ken Shah and a photo negative of a costume by Albert Moore ca. 1967 entitled “Peacock.”

Series consists of promotional materials for Caribana events throughout the years, Carnival events in Trinidad and Tobago, as well as other events Shah hosted or attended in both Canada and the Caribbean. Files include flyers, newspapers and magazines catered for the West Indian community in Canada and the Caribbean.

Caribana working files

Series consists of the working files belonging to Shah including materials from the Caribbean Cultural Committee, a non-profit organization in charge of planning and running Caribana each year from 1967-2006. Files include material created and accumulated by Shah in his role as mas producer and bandleader for Caribana, including: correspondence, band registration forms, schedules of events, and documents to organize the festival's various mas camps each year.

Expo 67

File consists of souvenirs from Expo 67. It includes postcards of the Trinidad and Tobago Pavillion, and souvenir mini albums showcasing all the Pavillions from the Expo.

File consists of posters, correspondence, a preliminary list of bands, a notice announcing that the Caribbean Committee for Cultural Advancement has secured a permanent address, news articles, and a list of directors and their responsibilities for Caribana '68.

Caribana – 1975 Jewels of the West Indies

A video cassette approximately 60 minutes long. The recording includes a documentary-style recording produced by Goudas Foods documenting Caribana 1975 and Shah’s band called “Jewels of the Indies.” It includes footage of Shah creating costumes, and footage of the Caribana parade itself.

Contrast 1975

File consists of issues Contrast Newspaper, a newspaper for the Black and Caribbean diaspora in Canada established in 1969. Topics covered include topics such as Bob Marley’s performance as Massey Hall, and Montreal’s Carifesta 1975.

News Clippings – 1976 Toronto

File consists of news clippings covering Caribana '76 events and related announcements such as the winning of a Wintario grant, mas preparations, and internal strife within the Carnival Development Association.

File consists of drawings for costume designs based on the 1977 mas band theme “People of Uzbek,” posters, letters of endorsement, news clippings, an honour roll list of participants from 1967 to 1976, parade float sketch for “Christmas in the Caribbean,” and a score sheet for the '82 Calypso Semi Finals.

Carnival Extravaganza ‘76

File consists of promotional material for “Carnival Extravaganza” an event held by the Carnival Development Association of Toronto celebrating the tenth year of Carnival in Toronto. The file also includes a program for a Carnival Art Exhibit held during the event at Harbourfront.

File consists of phone and business directories for the Toronto-area centering around Black, Guyanese and Trinidadian communities. They include, the Black Dial Directory, The Black Pages, and Where Is It.
