Fonds consists of records documenting Bruce Allen Powe's work as a writer of fiction, reviews and articles, his work as Executive Director for the Ontario Liberal Association, and his public relations career and freelance work for Powe Communications. Records include journals, day planners, notebooks, correspondence and e-mail, research files, scrapbooks, manuscripts and other draft writing, and career-related memorabilia. Also included in the fonds are family photographs and personal memorabilia; Powe's M.A. diploma, thesis and related research files; files, memorabilia and photographs pertaining to his World War II military service; and photographs, memorabilia and other records pertaining to Powe's trip to Ghana in March 1957 as associate private secretary to the Canadian Minister of Mines and Technical Surveys.

Accession consists of records documenting Powe's writing career in the 1990s and 2000s, particularly the writing, editing, publication and promotion of his novel "Aldershot 1945" and the reprint and stage productions of "The Aberhart Summer", as well as records pertaining to his freelance work for Powe Communications and his personal life and family. Records in this accession include manuscripts and other draft writing, photographs of Powe and his family, research files, notebooks and day planners, memorabilia (including newspaper and magazine clippings), printed e-mail and correspondence, posters, drawings, scrapbooks and videocassettes.

File consists of a group portrait of an unidentified family and photographs of Lillian and Wilbur Powe with others.

File consists of Powe’s University of Alberta’s BA and MA diplomas, as well as a University of Alberta Bachelor of Education diploma belonging to his father-in-law, Godfrey Brady.

Wedding scrapbook

Item is a scrapbook commemorating the marriage of Powe to Alys Maude Brady on 30 June 1949. Scrapbook includes a wedding invitation, newspaper clippings, letters, greeting cards, telegrams and other ephemera, as well as loose photographs of Powe’s grandchildren, unidentified family members, and a wedding portrait of the couple. Some photographs of Alys have been pasted in the book.

Photographs of Alberta scenery and parks

File consists of photographs of scenery in Banff and Jasper National Parks, including Lake Louise Hotel and Crowfoot Glacier, and one photograph of Powe. Locations of photographs annotated on verso in pencil.

File consists of photographs of Powe as a teenager, Powe’s parents, Wilbur and Lillian, in their yard, as well as photographs of scenery in Banff, Victoria, Vancouver, Seattle, and the Columbia Ice Fields in Alberta.

File consists of photographs of Powe’s sister-in-law, Sheila Schlesinger (sister of Alys Powe), her husband, Ernie, and their family.

Accession 1995-028

Accession consists of Bruce Allen Powe's diaries, personal correspondence and correspondence, writings, and other files relating to provincial Liberal politics (1960-1965), journals, his M.A. thesis and research files. There are manuscript drafts for his works "The Ice Eaters," "Expresso 67," "The Mounties Always Gets His," "Killing Ground," "The Last Days of the American Empire", "The Aberhart Summer", and other writings along with related correspondence. Also included are manuscripts for reviews, essays, articles, and press clippings of reviews on his published works. In addition, there is some personal correspondence and World War II papers and military service memorabilia.

File consists of a photograph of Powe in military uniform in Sept. 1943 and printed copies of a photograph of Powe used for a book jacket in 2004.

File consists of photographs of Powe while in the military during the Second World War, in Alberta and in London, England. Included are photographs of Powe with fellow soldiers and images of London’s Tower Bridge.

File consists of photographs and original negatives taken by Powe of the crowds around Buckingham Palace, Leicester Square, Lower Regent Street and Piccadilly Circus in London on 8 May 1945.

University of Alberta yearbook pages, certificate and photograph

File consists of selected unbound pages from the University of Alberta at Edmonton students' union annual publication, which includes photos of Powe and his wife, Alys, a certificate of outstanding service issued to Powe, and a photograph of Powe setting the type for the student newspaper.

Ghana independence celebrations : slides

File consists of photographs taken by Powe while in Ghana during independence celebrations in 1957. Photographs include images of individuals, buildings, natural scenery, and large gatherings of people. Some photographs in this file were taken in Canada.

Diefendollars

File consists of several versions of “Diefendollars”, novelty dollar bills worth 91 or 92.5 cents, produced by the Liberal Party of Canada and used as campaign propaganda.

Item is a studio portrait of Lester B. Pearson. The photo mat has been inscribed and signed by Pearson: “To Bruce Powe, in grateful appreciation for all that you have done to help. Lester B. Pearson. Ottawa, Dec. 25/63”.

Memorandum from Keith Davey

Item is a memorandum from Keith Davey, the national campaign director for the Liberal Federation of Canada, sent to Lester B. Pearson and Walter Gordon, praising Powe for his work and attendance at a Saskatchewan Campaign College. Included is a joke Diefendollar bill.

File pertains to “Expresso ‘67”, an illustrated book written by Powe with illustrations by Jeff Chapleau, published by Peter Martin Associates. Records are a newspaper clipping, a royalty report, correspondence exchanged between Peter Martin and Jeff Chapleau, and a receipt from M.G. Hurtig Booksellers Ltd.
