Scope and content
File consists of a newspaper article and letter from Hayden Carruth regarding his decision to turn down President Bill Clinton’s invitation to attend a celebration of American poetry at the White House, Jul. 1998, and photographs of Claire Wilks and Barry Callaghan in Prague and Zagreb to meet with translators and a publisher including images of street scenes, architecture, statues, horseracing, a Jewish cemetery, the Croatian Writers’ Union house, Branko Gorjup, and buildings damaged by war. Notebook also contains a press clipping announcing that the first W.O. Mitchell Literary Prize was awarded to Barry Callaghan, annotated handwritten prose, betting receipts, photographs of a reading by Callaghan at Burton Auditorium, York University, a published essay by Justice James Clarke entitled “Poetry from the sharp debris of bereavement,” handwritten annotations to galley proofs (presumably for the “Author’s Note” in "Barrelhouse Kings"), and an essay by Callaghan, “A Great Literary Feast,” about a visit to Beirut and a conversation with William Ronald, host of CBC Radio’s "As It Happens," published in a newspaper by Chapters.
