Youth Strategies

File consists of records related to youth strategies in education, housing, drug and crime prevention and anti-racism as compiled by MacNevin. It includes meeting minutes, letters of understanding, and planning documents related to initiatives funded by the City of Toronto and Toronto Community Housing. It also includes an academic paper titled "Public Spaces for Youth? The Case of the Jane-Finch Neighborhood in Toronto" (2015) by Michail Galanakis.

York-Finch General Hospital and Reactivation Care Centre

File consists of issue number 2 of the Finch Focus newsletter published by the York-Finch General Hospital. It includes a letter dated June 30, 1987 regarding the appointments of four new members to the York-Finch hospital's Board of Governors. It also includes a February 2018 Emery Village Voice article titled "York Finch Reactivation Centre" by Claudio D'Intino, which documents the history and 2015 closure of the York-Finch hospital, in addition to the opening of the Local Health Integration Network (LHIN)'s York Finch Reactivation Care Centre in 2018.

York West Early Development Instrument Results

File consists of the Early Development Instrument (EDI) results of the York West riding with data compiled by the Canadian Mothercraft Society and the Province of Ontario. It includes the riding's EDI results spanning 2004-2005, 2007-2008 and 2010-2011. It also includes presentation slides relating to the riding's 2014-2015 EDI results prepared by the Toronto Early Literacy Specialists.

File consists of a 2008 draft of the York University Secondary Plan prepared by the City of Toronto. This draft plan includes proposed amendments to the land use plan inclusive of and surrounding York University

Women Moving Forward

File consists of an information booklet, a programming toolkit and a feasibility study related to Women Moving Forward, an initiative of the Jane/Finch Centre. The information booklet includes a breakdown of the "milestones" that participants reach through the course of the program and testimonials from past participants.The programming toolkit includes guidelines and templates for staff usage. The 2014 feasibilty study assesses the potential of the Women Moving Forward program to continue to attract funding.

File consists of the report "Who Lived Where in 2006? A Neighbourhood Typology of Eight Canadian Metropolitan Areas" by Robert Murdie, Jennifer Logan and Richard Maaranen. It examines the metropolitan populations of Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa-Gatineau, Toronto, Hamilton, Winnipeg, Calgary and Vancouver through demographic descriptors such as: older working class, urban/suburban homeowner, old city establishment, young, single and mobile renters, disadvantaged groups and family ethnoburbs.

File consists of "Unequal City: The Hidden Divide Among Toronto's Children and Youth," a 2017 Toronto Child and Family Poverty Report Card jointly produced by the Children's Aid Society of Toronto, Colour of Poverty - Colour of Change, Family Service Toronto/Ontario Campaign 2000, the Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants, Social Planning Toronto and the Children's Aid Foundation.

Towards Indicators of Community Capacity : A Study in Four Toronto Communities

File consists of the community report "Towards Indicators of Community Capacity: A Study in Four Toronto Communities." The report examines indicators of quality of life in the Toronto neighbourhoods of Tobermory, Parkdale, Regent Park and Firgrove. Firgrove and Tobermory are communities within the Jane-Finch neighbourhood and the objective of the three-year qualitative research project was to compare four Toronto communities and determine the indicators of community capacity - the potential for the community to work towards and achieve their goals. This was measured through facilitating conditions offered by access to child care, spaces, services and programs, in contrast to barrier conditions such as unsafe meeting places and meeting times and a negative image of the community imposed by outsiders.

File consists of excerpts from the City of Toronto's 2014 Toronto Youth Equity Strategy document. MacNevin notes that its findings were adopted by Toronto City Council on 2 February, 2014.

It presents the history of the Toronto Association of Neighbourhood Services (TANS) in three distinct sections. The first section covers the period from 1918 to 1970. File consists of two copies of a summary of demographic breakdowns, information on community services and organizations, and community investment information for neighbourhoods 21, 22, 24, 25, 26 and 27 of the City of Toronto. It includes maps, demographic and status highlights, addresses and contact information for community groups. It also includes a community partnership and investment comparison between the Toronto Wards of North York West and North York East with Downtown West and Downtown East.

File consists of research papers, university blog posts and press statements that examine the relationship and partnership between York University and residents of the Jane and Finch neighbourhood. It includes the blog posts "Jane-Finch youth building bridges to university with 'transformative site' art installation at York U" (September 10, 2001), "Students from Jane/Finch high schools complete university courses" (January 20, 2016), and "York U unveils spectacular Inuit soccer player sculpture" (June 24, 2016). It includes York University's School of Social Work press release titled "Statement in condemnation of racist political speech: Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti's recent attack on Jane and Finch community members" (September 27, 2018). It includes the research papers "Campus Community Connections: Exploring Collaborative Planning Processes between York University and its Neighbours" (2015), "The University as a Neoliberal and Colonizing Institute: A Spatial Case Study Analysis of the Invisible Fence between York University and the Jane and Finch Neighbourhood in the City of Toronto" (2017) by Ardavan Eizadirad, "The morning after: Stakeholder reflections on the sustainability of a community-campus engagement center in the changing environment" (2017). Also included is an annotated bibliography compiled by Rubina Karyar and Laura Campbell in 2019 for the "Integrated Local Labour Market Research Project."

Studies in the Community Planning of Jane-Finch

File consists of research papers, speeches and reports that examine Jane-Finch through the lens of community planning. It includes two copies of excerpts from "How Energy is Creating Change from Within," a 1982 presentation by Professor Elspeth Heyworth, the 1984 research paper "Community Spirit of the Jane/Finch Corridor" by York University Student Beth Bow, "A Paper on Community Organization and Planning" by Peggy Birnberg and Peggy Edwards, who presented it at the Community Planning Conference in 1988, and an excerpt of "United Nations of Jane-Finch," a 1993 research paper by resident and York University student Richard De Gaetano. It also includes a 1980 proposal from the Jane/Finch Community and Family Centre to conduct prevention planning assessments to determine the services needed within the rapidly growing community. Jane/Finch Community and Family Centre President Helen Ede's 1978 workshop presentation notes for "Neighbourhood Planning - Social Evolution of the Jane Finch Area" are also included.

Ruth Morris Pamphlets

File consists of four pamphlets written by Ruth Morris. It contains two copies of her 1997 pamphlet "Keys to Hope and Action," her 1998 pamphlet "Overcoming Neighbourhoodism," and her 1999 pamphlet "The Jane-Finch Community Banking Project."

File consists of demographic research excerpts and notes compiled by Wanda MacNevin, including some that are undated. It includes maps of City of Toronto neighbourhoods and information on ethno-racial backgrounds, neighbourhood population numbers, photocopied photographs and tables of data.

Research files

Series consists of research notes, reports, academic papers and dissertations, meeting notes, books, presentation slides, speeches, correspondence, and exhibition text. It is arranged by research focus as compiled by the creator in the process of writing the book "By Us! For Us!" The focus of the first section is the history of the Jane-Finch neighbourhood from the first Indigenous settlements to the development of housing and infrastructure by settler Canadians. The second section focuses on demographic information about Jane-Finch through census results and academic research into the construction and development of housing in Jane-Finch. The third section focuses on the diversity of community residents and the socio-economic impacts that governing policies and public perception have had on their lives. The fourth section focuses on youth experiences and includes community-based programming for anti-drug and crime prevention initiatives for this age group. The fifth section focuses on assessments of the Toronto Metropolitan Police’s actions and residents’ resistance to cuts in community services, 1997 amalgamation of the City of Toronto and the Toronto Strong Neighbourhoods Strategy. The sixth section focuses on community organizations and community voices. The seventh section focuses on community-based initiatives to improve infrastructure and the standard of living and the community’s relationship with York University and its researchers. The eighth section includes books and a videocassette tape of the movie Teen Moms: Our Stories, produced by the Black Creek Community Health Centre.

Report on the Outreach Pilot Project

File consists of the "Report on the Outreach Pilot Project," prepared by the Mayor's Committee on Community, Race and Ethnic Relations, City of North York. Also included is Alderman Pat O'Neill's memo "Jane-Finch Project," which is a follow-up to the original report. This report recommended that the City of North York evaluate the effectiveness of their community-directed programs towards meeting community needs, promote-information sharing and program coordination among recreational and leisure programs, evaluate the consequences of planning initiatives on impacted communities, develop trust between government workers and community members, the establishment of a Youth Sub-Committee and the development of a feasibility report to assess whether a permanent Outreach/Streetworker Program would be viable. O'Neill's memo expands on the issues raised in the original report and makes additional recommendations for implementing programs within the Jane-Finch community.

Project Rebirth: Report on Community Needs as Established at A Community Conference

File consists of two copies of "Project Rebirth," a report prepared by Jane-Finch residents and community organizations to assess the community's education, employment, facilities, recreation services, immigrant services, and housing related needs and develop strategies to strengthen community-led anti-racism and anti-drug initiatives. The report summarizies key problems found in surveyed areas within Jane-Finch and proposes short-term and long-term solutions to improve quality of life in those areas.
