Task Force on the Sexual Abuse of Patients files

Series consists of records created and used by Marilou McPhedran while serving as chairperson of two task forces on the subject of sexual abuse of patients by physicians. The first of these independent task forces was commissioned by the College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1990 and included members Harvey Armstrong, Rachel Edney, Pat Marshall, Roz Roach and coordinators Briar Long and Bonnie Homeniuk. The records in this series pertain to task force hearings and meetings and document the process of preparing the task force's preliminary and final reports. These records include McPhedran's resource materials and first-person testimonies submitted to the task force. Also included in this series are records created when the task force was reconvened in 2000 to review the impact of the Regulated Health Professions Act. Files in this series consist of reports, correspondence, memoranda, legal documents, notes, newspaper clippings, financial statements, academic papers, photographs, electronic documents, and video cassettes.

United Nations : gender mainstreaming : published material

File consists of published baseline data on gender mainstreaming in United Nations entities. Also included is a pamphlet from Canada’s Human Security Program and a published report from the Prairie Women’s Health Centre for Excellence on including gender in health planning.

File consists of a newsletter update, clippings, correspondence and the publication from the United Nations Development Fund for Women, “Progress of the world’s women” volumes 1 and 2, 2002. The records pertain to the United Nations Security Council resolution 1325 on women, peace and security.

File consists of articles, book reviews and international law reports pertaining to sexual violence, war crimes, and women’s rights.

“L20” : global health

File consists of communiques and a draft background paper on global health, developed in Costa Rica, used to support the creation of a L20 process for governments to effectively address common health challenges. The file also contains newspaper articles pertaining to the United Nations.

Implementation plan for the NATO policy on combating trafficking in human beings

File pertains to McPhedran’s efforts for Canada to share a draft training module to expedite the development of effective training materials that could be used in all NATO training centres for peacekeepers. McPhedran worked at having senior Canadian military and/or NATO leaders to deliver the draft module at an upcoming NATO workshop, “Curriculum Development on Combating Trafficking in Human Beings,” to be held in Geneva, Sept. 30 – Oct. 1, 2004.

American Convention on Human Rights : international

File pertains to the Canadian adherence to the ACHR and includes an interim report of the Standing Senate Committee on Human Rights. File also includes correspondence between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Pierre S. Pettigrew, and the Minister of Health, Ujjal Dosanjh and the controversy around abortion language in the ACHR.

Judicial round tables on “Access to justice and legal empowerment of the poor” : program materials

File pertains to McPhedran’s work to arrange, facilitate and execute this series of round table discussions between members of the Canadian judiciary and judiciary from Peru, Jamaica and Ghana, held in Ottawa, Winnipeg, Saskatoon and Montreal in Nov. 2011. Records include a letter, draft programs, participant biographies, terms of reference, reports, background information, attendee lists and notes.

Bar Ad protest re: sexist materials and exams

File consists of draft correspondence, correspondence, notes and newspaper articles pertaining to a protest by students, including McPhedran, in the Ontario Bar Admission Course regarding sexist content in course materials.

File consists of contact lists, agendas, minutes, correspondence, notes and copies of newspaper clippings pertaining to the activities, meetings and membership of the Committee for '94, a predecessor organization to Equal Voice. Members included McPhedran, Libby Burnham, Maude Barlow, Michele Landsberg, Christina McCall, Joyce Weiland, Rosemary Speirs and others.
