Item is a handwritten letter from the Rev. John Stuart in Kingston, Upper Canada to his son James Stuart, personal secretary to Sir Robert Milnes, Lieutenant Govern of Lower Canada, regarding John's daughter Mary, who travelled to Montreal until James could deliver her to Elizabeth Mountain, the wife of Bishop Jacob Mountain in Quebec City. John Stuart discusses the affairs of his other children and his daughter-in-law, Mary Brooks, who was the daughter of the future governor of Massachusetts. The letter offers comments on family relationships and the status of women in the early nineteenth century.

The second half of the notebook lists the types of timber used in ship construction with notes and tables related to shipbuilding. This part also includes records for shipping masts "On account of Robertson Forsyth & Co." through Moss Cove, Quebec. The notebook was used by Mossington while visiting Lower Canada to procures ships' masts.
File consists of a notebook. Inside the front cover bears the inscription, "Thos. Mossenton May 16 1816," and on the opposite page is written, "unfortunately broke." Mossington began writing in the volume with notes and numerical tables devoted to HMS "Cherub," a Cormorant-class sloop built in Dover in 1806. This section also includes: a note written at Woolwich in 1816 addressed from Thomas Shore to Henry Canham regarding the skills of an apprentice shipwright who had completed three-and-a-half years of service (the text was used more than once, as the names of both the apprentice and employer were crossed out and replaced with others); "A cure for the Ague given me by a gentleman in Canada"; and a list of English bishoprics copied from "Bell's Weekly Newspaper" of 21 Feb. 1813. The notebook was flipped and the section entitled "Shipping Book" begun, providing information about the shipment of masts and lumber, as well as a possible crew list.
