History research files and correspondence

Series consists of records pertaining to Gentles’ research and publishing in the field of English history. Includes files pertaining to: the publishing of various articles and book reviews, as well as his monograph, The New Model Army in England, Ireland and Scotland, 1645-1653 (Blackwell, 1992); the Toronto Research Group in Early Modern British History; and various research trips dating from the late 1970s to the 1990s. Series also includes records related to the publishing of a Festschrift in honour of British historian Austin Woolrych, with whom Gentles had a longstanding relationship. The volume, Soldiers, Writers and Statesmen in the English Revolution (Cambridge University Press, 1998), was co-edited by Gentles. Series also includes several files of correspondence related to Gentles’ history research activities, as well as one file of personal correspondence.

File consists of the contents of a binder labelled, "The Uncertified Human: Speaker's Presentation on Abortion," created by Uncertified Human Publishing Company, who also issued a pro-life magazine of the same name between 1973 and 1981. The speaker's presentation includes talking points, illustrative slides depicting fetal development and abortion, the text of a lecture in 20-25 minute and 30-35 minute versions, forty examples of "leading questions" for the audience, and a guide on how to respond to hostile questions. The appendix includes the essay, "Abortion and the Unwanted Child," by Ian Gentles, 1973, information sheets, and other short papers such as, "The Factor of Rape in Abortion," 1977, "Christian Theology and Abortion," and "Feminist as anti-abortionist." The file also contains two issues of "The Uncertified Human: Canada's Pro-Life Magazine," Vol. 6, no. 9 (February 1979) and Vol. 6, no. 10 (March 1979).

Accruals to this fonds consist of Hockin’s files from his work as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Investment Funds Institute of Canada, which discuss issues such as sales practices for mutual funds, industry standards and self-regulation, educational initiatives within the industry, and the impact of international events upon the market value of securities. Accession 2015-036 consists of files created by Hockin as Chair of the Expert Panel on Securities Regulation between 2007 and 2009, which include correspondence, research reports, documents on principles, regulatory models, and consultation with stakeholders, working notes, newspaper articles, and draft and final text of the panel’s report. This accession also includes notebooks kept by Hockin while serving on the Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund from 2009 to 2013, containing his notes and personal reflections on global financial stability, income models, quota negotiations, risk management, global liquidity, and other areas of financial policy, as well as the IMF's relationship with countries such as Greece, Germany, and Portugal.
