Fonds consists of records documenting Bruce Allen Powe's work as a writer of fiction, reviews and articles, his work as Executive Director for the Ontario Liberal Association, and his public relations career and freelance work for Powe Communications. Records include journals, day planners, notebooks, correspondence and e-mail, research files, scrapbooks, manuscripts and other draft writing, and career-related memorabilia. Also included in the fonds are family photographs and personal memorabilia; Powe's M.A. diploma, thesis and related research files; files, memorabilia and photographs pertaining to his World War II military service; and photographs, memorabilia and other records pertaining to Powe's trip to Ghana in March 1957 as associate private secretary to the Canadian Minister of Mines and Technical Surveys.

Accession consists of records documenting Powe's writing career in the 1990s and 2000s, particularly the writing, editing, publication and promotion of his novel "Aldershot 1945" and the reprint and stage productions of "The Aberhart Summer", as well as records pertaining to his freelance work for Powe Communications and his personal life and family. Records in this accession include manuscripts and other draft writing, photographs of Powe and his family, research files, notebooks and day planners, memorabilia (including newspaper and magazine clippings), printed e-mail and correspondence, posters, drawings, scrapbooks and videocassettes.

Contracts

File consists of originals and copies of contracts and releases, copies of book title pages, correspondence and notes pertaining to publications written by Powe, including “Expresso ‘67”, “Killing Ground”, “Last Days of the American Empire”, “The Aberhart Summer”, “The Ice Eaters”, stage rights for “The Aberhart Summer” and “Aldershot 1945”.

New agreement with Access Copyright

File consists of correspondence, distribution reports, printed e-mail and Powe’s publication list pertaining to Access Copyright, the Canadian copyright licensing agency.

“Killing Ground” : e-mail

File consists of printed e-mail exchanged between Powe and a fan of his book “Killing Ground: the Canadian Civil War”.

Draft writing

File consists of mostly handwritten, unidentified drafts by Powe, notes, and newspaper clippings. Included in the file is a document entitled “The working methods of an author: preface prepared by Pierre Berton as an introduction to his papers deposited with McMaster University Archives” (Jan. 1990).

Archives : York University : donation of personal papers

File pertains to Powe’s donation of his personal papers to the Clara Thomas Archives and Special Collections at York University and Powe’s financial support for the Kent Haworth Archival Research Fellowship. Records include correspondence, printed e-mail, an inventory, background information and notes by Powe, and a transfer of ownership agreement. Also included is correspondence pertaining to Powe’s donation of photographs to the Provincial Archives of Alberta.

Speaking engagements : notes and research materials

File pertains to Powe’s speaking engagements at a 2011 Remembrance Day event, a Royal Canadian Military Institute Military History Night event in Sept. 2006, and about his book “Aldershot 1945”.

“Aldershot” : correspondence re: publication

File includes printed e-mail, notes, incoming correspondence and copies of Powe’s outgoing correspondence. Much of the e-mail is exchanged between Powe, his agent Bev Slopen, and NeWest Press manager Ruth Linka.

B.W. Powe memorabilia

File consists of correspondence, copies of book reviews, articles, course calendars, notices, and a PhD reading list pertaining to Powe' son, B.W. Powe, and his academic and literary career.

File pertains to a 2004 book review written by Powe for the Literary Review of Canada. Records include review drafts, a copies of the published review, printed copies of e-mail exchanged with editors Bronwyn Drainier and Robin Roger, notes, newspaper clippings, and an invoice. File pertains to stage productions of “The Aberhart Summer”, written by Conni Massing, based on Powe’s novel. Records include contracts for amateur performance rights, correspondence, memoranda, royalty statements, programs, a box office statement, an agreement between Powe and Massing regarding the stage rights, contact lists, and reviews.

“The Aberhart Summer” : stage productions

File pertains to productions of the play based on this book by Powe at Theatre Erindale (University of Toronto at Mississauga) and the Living Arts Centre in Mississauga in 2002 and 2003. Records in the file include printed e-mail and correspondence, photographs, programs, a pamphlet, a poster, a notice, newspaper clippings, and royalty statements.
