      History

Planet in Focus: International Film Festival is a Toronto-based incorporated not-for-profit organization dedicated to environmental media arts. Established in 1999, it promotes awareness and engagement with environmental issues through film exhibition and educational initiatives.
Its primary activity is the annual Planet in Focus Environmental Film Festival, held each fall in Toronto. The festival presents documentary, short, and animated films by Canadian and international filmmakers. The festival also includes workshops, panels, networking events, and the Green Pitch Award where selected filmmakers present proposals for production funding.
The organization also delivers year-round programming across Canada. This includes the Cross Canada Campus Tour for post-secondary institutions, the Green School Tours for elementary schools, the Eco Film Lab which provides filmmaking training for educators, and the Student Film Festival featuring works by students from kindergarten through Grade 8. In 2017, the festival also delivered the Attawapiskat Eco-Film Lab, a two-week filmmaking training program for youth developed in collaboration with Indigenous filmmakers and the Attawapiskat community.
The organization operates under the direction of a board of directors and staff, supported by volunteers and contractors. Planet in Focus was founded by Mark Haslam, a graduate of York University’s Master of Environmental Studies and Master of Fine Arts programs, who served as festival director from 1999 to 2004 and contributed to its early development.
