Retired Women Teachers of Ontario

During the late 1940s and early 1950s, small groups of retired women teachers began meeting in various parts of Ontario for fellowship, and to discuss issues of mutual concern. A group in Toronto known as the Rendezvous Club organized the inaugural meeting of the Ontario Association of Superannuated Women Teachers of Ontario in April 1956 for the purpose of persuading the provincial government to raise the level of pensions for retired women teachers to the same amount as that of male teachers. The organization grew steadily over the next 20 years, introduced a unique post-hospital insurance plan in 1963, and won the government's agreement to raise the pension rates for retired women teachers in 1967. The Provincial Office was established in Peterborough in 1971, when Cora Bailey was appointed the association's first Executive Secretary. Major changes were made to the constitution in 1999, when the name of the organization was changed to the Retired Women Teachers of Ontario. It continues to operate as a support system for the special interests and well being of over 5,700 retired women teachers. Meetings, excursions and other events organized by more than 50 branches throughout Ontario provide a forum for networking, socializing, and sharing information about health, hobbies and emerging issues such as telephone fraud. The branches also support numerous charitable causes such as food banks, women's shelters, the homeless, sick children, the Salvation Army and the Canadian Cancer Society, and provide support to members who are ill, home bound or have suffered a loss in their families. In addition, the RWTO commemorates the contributions of women teachers through published profiles, donations in memory of deceased teachers, and entries in a book of remembrance.

Egypt Migrations: a Public Humanities Project

Canadian Italian Business and Professional Association of Toronto

The Canadian Italian Business and Professional Association (CIBPA) of Toronto was founded in 1952 and incorporated on 21 December 1956 under its original name, the Canadian Italian Businessmen's Association (CIBA). The CIBA of Toronto began under the direction of a small group of Italian-Canadian businessmen and professionals, who included Anthony Andreoli, Sam Benedetto, Joseph D. Carrier, John de Toro, Remo de Carli, Eugenio Faludi, Neldo Lorenzetti, William Morrassutti, Vincent Paul, Sam Sorbara and Suilio Venchiarruti, who was the association's first president. Formed in response to the difficulties facing the large numbers of Italian Canadians in Toronto after World War II, the not-for-profit association assisted with the integration of new immigrants into Canadian society and raised funds for different causes. Throughout the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, the CIBPA Toronto supported the formation and/or development of a number of charitable organizations, including the Italian Immigrant Aid Society (IIAS), the Centro Organizzativo Scuole Tecniche Italiane (COSTI), the Federazione di Associazioni e Club Italiani (FACI), the Italian Canadian Benevolent Corporation (ICBC), the Columbus Centre and the Villa Colombo Home for the Aged, as well as other charitable initiatives. In addition to its fundraising and charitable endeavours, as membership in the CIBPA Toronto grew, the association held monthly dinner meetings, business and professional networking events, and other special events with the aim of promoting business and social interaction between its members and with the wider community, which is the primary focus of the modern CIBPA Toronto.

The CIBPA Toronto is governed by a constitution and by-laws, which detail the association's objectives to "initiate and foster programs and activities for the welfare and betterment of the Italian and Canadian Italian communities, to promote and strengthen the image of the Canadian Italian community within Toronto and Canada, and to initiate and foster social and cultural interest and activities among its members and the Canadian Italian community." The CIBPA Toronto is managed by an elected board of directors comprised of an immediate past president, president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer and Ladies' Auxiliary representative. The board of directors oversees a number of permanent committees, including executive, legal, membership and nominating committees, and other rotating committees. CIBPA Toronto membership includes categories for full, youth, student, life, honorary and corporate members. In 1983, the CIBPA Toronto joined CIBPA Montreal to form the National Federation of Canadian Italian Business and Professional Associations, which now includes chapters in Hamilton, Niagara, Halifax, Ottawa, Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie, Thunder Bay, Windsor, Winnipeg, Regina, Calgary, Windsor and Vancouver.

Desh Pardesh

Desh Pardesh was a multidisciplinary arts festival dedicated to providing a venue for underrepresented and marginalized voices within the South Asian diasporic community, particularly left wing and queer South Asian artists and academics. It operated from 1988 to 2001. The organization's mandate states: "Desh Pardesh is lesbian and gay positive, feminist, anti-racist, anti-imperialist and anti caste/classist. Desh exists to ensure that the voices and expressions of those constituencies in the South Asian community which are systematically silenced are provided with a community forum. In particular: independent artists, cultural producers and activists who are women, lesbians and gays, people with disabilities, working class people and seniors." Founded in the late 1989, the festival was originally conceived as "Salaam Toronto!" and administered by Khush, an association of South Asian gay men in Toronto. This day-long festival was held at 519 Community Centre in May, 1988. The Khush committee later developed into a coalition-based organizing committee to administer the newly named Desh Pardesh, which was held in March 1990, and was co-sponsored by Khush and The Euclid Theatre. Desh Pardesh was incorporated as a non-profit organization on April 7, 1994. In addition to organizing an annual summer conference and arts festival (featuring film screenings, workshops, issue-driven seminars, spoken work and literary readings, music, dance and performance art pieces), Desh Pardesh also hosted periodic arts development workshops, community outreach seminars, mini-festivals, art exhibits, and film retrospectives. It also served as a resource centre and referral service to various South Asian community groups and artists, cultural organizations and activists. In later years, Desh Pardesh worked in close collaboration with SAVAC (South Asian Visual Arts Collective). The Desh Pardesh festival and its administrative body closed in 2001 due to a financial crisis.

Music Gallery

The Music Gallery is a musician-run venue, located in Toronto, for the performance of electronic music, multimedia productions, dance, contemporary jazz and world music. It was established in 1976 by the Canadian Creative Music Collective (CCMC), a composer/improvisor collective initially aligned with the free-jazz movement. The Music Gallery was directed jointly by the CCMC's Peter Anson and Allan Mattes from 1976-1989 and soley by Mattes from 1980-1987. Jim Montgomery assumed direction in 1987, a position he held until 2005 when Jonathan Bruce became its interim director. By 1990, it averaged nearly 65 concerts annually and has hosted up to 150 concerts in a year. Through the 1980's and 1990's The Music Gallery was the home of the CCMC but also served as the home base of the Canadian Electronic Ensemble, the Glass Orchestra, the Evergreen Club Gamelan Orchestra, Hemispheres, New Music Co-op and Sound Pressure among other groups. It produced 'Ear It Live, a traveling festival of improvised music that toured Ontario and Quebec from 1979-1988 and sponsored an annual electronic music festival from 1979-1991. It has hosted residencies by artists including Derek Bailey, Mischa Megelberg and Barre Phillips. It has also operated it own record label, Music Gallery Editions, and is responsible for the issuing of some 27 lps, many of which are live performances taped at the Gallery itself including recordings of the CCMC, Lubomyr Melnyk, The Artists' Jazz Band, John Oswald, Peggy Sampson, Casey Sokol and The Nihilist Spasm Band. Music Gallery performances have also been featured on CBC Radio and CKLN-FM in Toronto.

Abbott-Ferguson Productions Ltd.

Abbott-Ferguson Productions Ltd. was established in the late 1970s by Roger Abbott and Don Ferguson, two of the principals of the Royal Canadian Air Farce comedy troupe. Together they acquired a 55% stake in Air Farce Productions Inc. which had been incorporated in 1978 to formally establish the ownership and management of the creative work of the group. During the 1990s Abbott-Ferguson Productions subsequently bought out the shares from other troupe members and co-owners Dave Broadfoot, Luba Goy, and John Morgan, becoming the sole owner of Royal Canadian Air Farce and its creative properties. After the death of Roger Abbott in 2011, Don Ferguson became the sole owner of Abbott-Ferguson Productions, and by extension, of Air Farce. Abbott-Ferguson Productions Ltd. remains active as of 2020. Until 2008, the primary focus of Abbott-Ferguson Productions was on the development, production, and delivery of Royal Canadian Air Farce radio and television programmes, as well as national concert tours; live stage productions; books; and home audio and video releases. The roots of Royal Canadian Air Farce exist in the improvisational theatre revue The Jest Society. Established in Montreal in 1970, The Jest Society took its name from then Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau's goal of making Canada a "just society." The original cast included co-founders John Morgan and Martin Bronstein, as well as Patrick Conlon, Gay Claitman, and Roger Abbott. Don Ferguson joined the group when it moved to Toronto in the fall of 1970. Patrick Conlon and Gay Claitman chose not to move and remained in Montreal. Luba Goy joined in January 1971. Favourable reviews caught the attention of CBC Radio, which engaged the group to perform on its weekly variety show The Entertainers. The group renamed itself Royal Canadian Air Farce in 1973 with the performing ensemble comprised of Roger Abbott, Luba Goy, John Morgan, Dave Broadfoot, and Martin Bronstein; Don Ferguson was one of the show writers. In 1974, Bronstein stepped away from performing to concentrate on writing and other interests, and Ferguson became a writer-performer. In 1977, Gord Holtan and Rick Olsen joined the group as apprentice writers. The Royal Canadian Air Farce radio shows were broadcast on CBC Radio from 1973-1997. This longevity marks their success in attracting and keeping a strong national audience with their satirical sketches skewering the cultural and political events of the day. Taped in front of a live audience, the shows were first recorded at the Curtain Club in Richmond Hill, Ontario, and then subsequently at the CBC's Cabbagetown Studios on Parliament Street in downtown Toronto. From 1984-1992, the troupe began touring across the country to record their weekly broadcasts, tailoring sketches to the local audience. Attempts at television during this time were unsuccessful as the medium was unable to accommodate the troupe's need for its topical content to be broadcast as soon as possible after recording. A one hour television special was broadcast on CBC in 1980, leading to a ten week series that was aborted by a CBC strike, and two subsequent specials on the network. In 1984, a live Toronto stage show was recorded and subsequently broadcast on Global television. A critical development occurred in 1991-92 when CBC consolidated its Toronto operations in downtown Toronto. The new Canadian Broadcasting Centre housed an extensive collection of costumes, a large wardrobe department, hair and make-up departments, and contained full carpentry and paint shops. The quick turnaround from script to broadcast enabled by this development led to 1992: Year of the Farce, which was televised as a satirical New Year's Eve special to such great ratings success that the troupe was able to begin its long run as CBC Television's highest rated weekly television series. The series ran from October 1993 until the end of December 2008. The radio and television programs ran concurrently until May 1997 when the radio show was discontinued in order to focus completely on television. Making the transition to the television series as performers were Roger Abbott, Don Ferguson, Luba Goy, and John Morgan. Dave Broadfoot retired from the cast in 1989 to pursue a solo career but, as a respected colleague and mentor, he made regular special guest appearances on the television series for many years including the final regular broadcast in 2008; Broadfoot passed away in 2016. Morgan retired from Air Farce in 2001, and the regular troupe was joined by many guest stars, some of whom subsequently became regulars. New cast members included Jessica Holmes, Alan Park, Craig Lauzon, and Penelope Corrin. The fifteenth season of the series was aired live under a new name, Air Farce Live, in 2007-2008. The final half-season ran from October until December 2008, and returned to the previous production schedule, which saw the show recorded in front of a live audience on Thursday evenings for broadcast on Friday. From 2009 until 2019 Air Farce reunited to perform its very highly rated New Year's Eve special broadcasts with a mix of performers. John Morgan passed away in 2004, and Roger Abbott remained with the troupe until his death in 2011. Long-time show writers Gord Holtam and Rick Olsen retired at the end of the 2008 season. Over the years Air Farce and its cast were recognized with many awards including the Governor General's Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement (Broadcasting) in 1998; a star on Canada's Walk of Fame in 2000; a Juno Award for Comedy Album of the Year in 1979; and the Earle Grey Award for lifetime achievement in Canadian television in 2000 as well as twice winning the viewer-voted People's Choice Award for favourite television program. The cast were the first Canadians inducted into the International Humour Hall of Fame in 1992, and were inducted into the Canadian Comedy Hall of Fame in 2001. In addition, cast members have been the recipients of multiple ACTRA awards. Other television projects produced by Abbott-Ferguson Productions include: three solo television specials performed by Air Farce mentor Dave Broadfoot; SketchCom, a series developed to showcase promising new comedians and comedy troupes; and XPM, a two-episode sitcom about a former Prime Minister starring Don Ferguson, Dave Broadfoot, Kathy Greenwood, and Jessica Holmes. In addition, Abbott-Ferguson Productions has been involved in developing and producing various comedy-related projects such as CBC Radio's comedy archive show, Comedy Classics, and other programs.

York University (Toronto, Ont.). Convocation Office

Prior to 1969 all the colleges and faculties of the university assembled together at a convocation, one in the spring and one in the fall. The growing size of the university soon made a single, united convocation unworkable. In the spring of 1969 Osgoode Hall Law School held its first, separate convocation, and in 1971 all the colleges (except Bethune) were called together separately in convocation. In 1972 Bethune and Administrative Studies began their own exercise, and they were followed by Fine Arts (1973), Environmental Studies (1974) and the faculties of Science and Education (1975).

York University Senior Common Rooms Inc.

The York University Senior Common Room was established at Glendon Hall in 1963. This Senior Common Room became the Glendon College Common Room in 1966 when the Founders College Senior Common Room opened on the Keele Street campus in that year. This latter establishment was renamed the York University College Faculty Common Room in 1968 and, as new colleges were opened on the campus an umbrella body, the York University Senior Common Room Inc., was established to serve as a license holder and victuals contractor for the several SCR's.

Membership in the Senior Common Room was restricted to academic and senior administrative staff, although honorary or special members could be adopted by the membership. The Senior Common Room Inc. was managed by a five-person Board of Directors who were all regular members of the SCR. The Senior Common Room Inc. was disbanded in 1976.

In 1987-88 it's name was changed to Joint Centre for Asia Pacific Studies (JCAPS) and its mandate broadened accordingly to include South-East Asia. During the same period, JCAPS achieved official status as a research centre both at York and the University of Toronto. In May of 2002, the University of Toronto ceased its involvement in JCAPS and the centre’s name was changed to York Centre for Asian Research.

Canadian Speakers' and Writers' Service Ltd. was begun by Matie Molinaro in 1950. Since that time it has represented the interests of several leading Canadian authors, performers and speakers including Marshall McLuhan, Harry Boyle, Mavor Moore, Celia Franca, Lister Sinclair, Don Harron, and several others. The Service also ran a writer's retreat north of Toronto until the late 1980s. Molinaro has also acted as a ghost-writer, written publicity, and translated material in her career as president of CSWS.

Co-operative Commonwealth Federation

The Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) was founded in Calgary in 1932 by a number of socialist, labour, agrarian, and co-operative groups with the aims of economic reform. With the signing of the Regina Manifesto (1933), the movement became an electoral political party and enjoyed great success in the province of Saskatchewan where it formed the provincial government for several years. The CCF also enjoyed limited success in Ontario (Official Opposition in 1943), as well as on the federal scene. In 1961, the CCF was succeeded by the New Democratic Party (NDP) after forming an alliance with the Canadian Labour Congress.

Communist Party of Canada

The Communist Party of Canada was founded in 1921 as a secret society and became a public party in 1924. Banned in 1940, it re-surfaced as the Labour-Progressive Party, returning to its proper designation in the latter part of the decade. Influential in trade unions, the Communist Party has had its greatest electoral successes in municipal politics, particularly in Winnipeg. It has suffered setbacks in the 1950s with the denunciation of Stalin and again in the 1980s with the decline of Communist parties in Russia and former Soviet-bloc countries.

The Avenue-Bay-Cottingham Ratepayers' Association (Toronto) was established in the 1960s as an advocacy group. It operated under various designations until 1970 when it acquired its present name. In the summer of 1970, the Marlborough Avenue Ratepayers' Association, a part of the Avenue-Bay-Cottingham group, began a dispute with Marathon Realty Corporation over the building of the York Racquets Club on Marlborough Avenue. The boundaries of the dispute widened when it was learned that Marathon planned to build Summerhill Square, a combined retail and residential complex on land it owned in the area. Marathon later sold the property and the Square was not built. Jack Granatstein, a professor of history at York University, was a Director of the Avenue-Bay-Cottingham Ratepayers' Association in 1969, president in 1971, and a prime mover in the Marlborough Avenue Ratepayers' Association. His description of the dispute is contained in his book, 'Marlborough marathon: one street against a developer', (1971).

York University Faculty Association (YUFA)

The York University Faculty Association was established in 1962 as the voice of faculty in University affairs, but it was not until 1974 that YUFA became the authorized bargaining agent for York University faculty members and librarians, as designated by the Collective Agreement. The Association elected officials include the Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson for Organization, Vice-Chairperson for External Affairs, Recording Secretary,Information Officer, and Treasurer. They are elected annually. In addition, there are appointed officers, the Grievance Officer, the Organizing Officer, and the Negotiating Officer, and representatives from the several constituencies (all faculties and the Library). Appointed officers serve a two-year term. The Association 's Executive Committee consists of all the officers, the past Chairperson, and the Chairperson of the Contract and Grievance Committee, and has general oversight of the Association between general meetings.

The Association has three standing committees: Contract and Grievance Committee, which reports to the Executive on specific grievances, oversees the election of local stewards and their handling of grievances, monitors the application of the Collective Agreement, hears reports and supervises the work of the Grievance Officer and the Organizing Officer. The Negotiating Committee is responsible for the drafting of the provisions of the Collective Agreement in cooperation with the Executive and Contract and Grievance Committee, presenting this positions to the membership for approval, negotiating the terms of the Collective Agreement, and appraising the membership of the proceedings of negotiations. The Nominating Committee is responsible for securing nominations for all elected positions, and for membership on committees.

Local stewards are elected for each constituency, one steward for every thirty-five members. There must be a minimum of four general meetings yearly, at least one of which is designated the Annual Meeting. The Executive and Contract and Grievance Committee shall meet six times yearly.

Professional Librarians' Association of York University (PLAYU)

The Professional Librarians' Association of York University was established in 1970. The objectives of PLAYU were to support and improve library service to the York community, to foster professional development of the librarians, and to promote the interests of its members. Membership was open to all professional librarians on campus, the Director of Libraries and all those who reported to that officer. The Association had a President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer, and an annual meeting. The Association played a role in establishing the professional status of librarians on campus. Librarians were placed on par with faculty and they were eventually admitted to the York University Faculty Association. With the development of the Library Council in 1976 and in the light of the librarians' membership in YUFA, the reasons for PLAYU's existence disappeared and the organization was disbanded in 1975.

Portuguese Canadian Democratic Association (PCDA)

The PCDA (1959-2007) was a Toronto based anti-fascist organization, composed of political exiles and other oppositionists of the Salazar/Caetano dictatorial regime in Portugal. The PCDA was very active in the Toronto, especially during the years leading up to and immediately after the Carnation Revolution of 1974 in Portugal. Besides engaging in political activism, locally and abroad, the PCDA also invested a great deal in cultural development, bringing important artists and intellectuals from Portugal and organizing high-cultural activities for the members of the Portuguese community of Toronto.

Among the first authors published by Wolsak and Wynn were Martin Singleton, Polly Fleck, Richard Lush, Marvyne Jenoff and George Miller. It published only one book in its first year -- an anthology of poems on the topic of jealousy entitled "The third taboo" -- but has now published 104 titles including six nominees for, and two winners of, the Governor General's Award for poetry. It has published works by Carol Malyon, Michael Redhill, Stan Rogal and A.F. Moritz, among others. Wolsak and Wynn is a member of the Literary Press Group of Canada.

Rendezvous Club

The Rendezvous Club of Toronto, a social club for retired teachers, was formed in 1937. The goal of the organization was to provide a way for members to maintain friendships made during the teaching years through social activities. Portuguese Canadian History Project

The Portguese Canadian History Project is a non-profit community outreach organization that aims to democratize and preserve the collective memory and historical knowledge of Portuguese immigrants and their descendants in Canada. Incorporated in 2008, Dr. Gilberto Fernandez and Dr. Susana Miranda founded the project, and were later joined by Dr. Raphael Costa and Dr. Emanuel da Silva.

In September 2009, PCHP partnered with the Clara Thomas Archives & Special Collections to facilitate the donation of archival records from individuals and organizations associated with Toronto's Portuguese community. In November 2015, the PCHP became associated with the Robarts Centre for Canadian Studies at York University, which hired Gilberto Fernandes as a postdoctoral visitor.

The Canadian Association of Latin American Studies (CALAS) was founded at York University on 12 June 1969. In 1976, CALAS became the Canadian Association of Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CALACS). The Association was the first Canadian organization to bring together scholars and activists from around the world engaged in teaching and research on on Latin America and the Caribbean, with a focus on expanding the study of Latin America and Caribbean in institutions of higher education. The Association holds an annual Congress and has published an interdisciplinary journal, the Canadian Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Studies, since 1976.

The Latin American Working Group (LAWG) was an independent, grassroots organization in Toronto, Canada, which carried out Canadian-Latin American solidarity activities from 1966-1997. Formed in response to the military coup and invasion of the Dominican Republic by the United States of America in 1965, LAWG's mission was to educate Canadians, develop solidarity links between Canadians and the peoples of Latin America, and advocate for an independent Canadian foreign policy. LAWG carried out activist research regarding the roles played by Canadian corporations and government aid policies in Latin America by working closely with union, churches, non-governmental organizations and academics in the North and the South hemispheres committed to human rights and social justice. It contributed to the creation and work of the Taskforce on Churches and Corporate Responsibility, the Inter-Church Committee on Human Rights in Latin America (ICCHRLA), the Central American Policy Alternatives (CAPA), the Roundtable for Peace, Mission for Peace, Canada-Chile Solidarity, Tools for Peace, Linking Ontario and Central American in Labour Solidarity (LOCALS), Common Frontiers, and other initiatives aimed at changing Canadian foreign policy. LAWG worked with several Canadian trade union humanity and social justice funds to facilitate north-south educational tours involving workers, teachers, Christians, health workers, and those from other sectors, as a way of deepening Canadians' understanding of, and mutual solidarity with, others living in this hemisphere. LAWG worked to provide insights into the reality of Latin America that it felt was not being provided by either the Canadian government nor mainstream media. Its first-hand information and primary research was published in its newsletter "the LAWG letter," "the Central America update," "LAWG labour report," and several books critically examining the role of Canadian corporations such as Falconbridge and INCO in Latin America. Over its 30 year existence, LAWG played a significant role in influencing Canadian public opinion, and that of churches, trade unions, and government policy-makers in relationship to Latin America. There is no connection between this group and the group with the same name in the United States.

The Organizing Committee of York University was instituted in July 1955, as a group of private citizens in Toronto concerned about the need for additional post-secondary education facilities in the Toronto region. These men were initially allied with the North Toronto branch of the YMCA, and in 1957 set about attempting to establish an institute of higher learning in northern Toronto under the proposed name, Kellock College. In the spring of 1958 the name 'York University' was substituted, a provincial charter was sought, and a proposed curriculum was discussed. By 1958 meetings had been held with provincial politicians and education officials regarding the charter and course of study, and discussions were going forward with the University of Toronto regarding federation of the new university with the established school until such time as York had its own facilities. The Committee had hoped to begin classes in September 1959, but the university did not open its doors until September 1960 as an affiliate of the University of Toronto. In March 1959, the York University Act was given Royal Assent, renaming the Committee as the provisional Board of Governors. It was replaced by the first regular Board of Governors in December 1959 through Order-in-Council appointments. The following served on the organizing committee: A.R. Hackett, A.D. Margison, J.R. (Roby) Kidd, T.R. Louden, E.T. Alberts, S.H. Deeks, N.T. Berry, A.G. Lascelles, A.D. McKee, P.R. Woodfield, and Air Marshall W.A. Curtis.

The International Commission for Coordination of Solidarity among Sugar Workers

The International Commission for Coordination of Solidarity Among Sugar Workers (ICCSASW) was an ecumenical church-sponsored organization founded in 1983. It emerged from the work begun by GATT(General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade)-Fly, an inter-church initiative for an alternative trade policy. GATT-Fly’s initial focus was the sugar trade, chosen and researched as a case study of the impact of international trade policy on developing countries. GATT-Fly’s efforts to bring about an International Sugar Agreement (to provide a fair return to sugar exporting countries) were unsuccessful, however their research and network building linked Canadian missionaries in sugar exporting countries with local workers’ organizations. This led in 1983 to the creation of ICCSASW, financed largely by church overseas development agencies. Based in Toronto, Canada, ICCSASW had a 10-member international steering committee of sugar union leaders.

ICCSASW aimed to provide an independent forum and build solidarity among workers across the political spectrum, through solidarity campaigns, national and regional seminars, international conferences and its monthly newsletter “Sugar World.” In 1998, ICCSASW ceased to exist due to lack of funding, although much of ICCSASW’s work has continued under the Geneva-based International Union of Food Workers (IUF), a trade secretariat. A more detailed administrative history and a list of contents written by ICCSASW executive secretary, Reg McQuaid, have been added by the archivist to file 2006-060/001(01) “Historical notes from the executive director about ICCSASW and SWIERL [Sugar Workers and Industry Education Resource Library]”.

The York University Transport Centre was established in 1969 following recommendations from the Vice President' s Committee on Canadian Transport Studies (1967). Its goal was to foster transportation education and research in the areas of national transportation issues, road transport issues and the natural transport network. The Centre, in cooperation with the University of Toronto Department of Urban Studies, established the Joint Programme in Transportation at the two universities in 1970.

York International began operations in 1969 as the Office of International Services. Until 1972 its limited role was to act as the internal administrative office for the York-Kenya Project. The expenses of the Office were paid out of the the Kenya budget.
In 1972 the Office of International Services received a new mandate from the university. A full-time Director was appointed reporting directly to the President. Its new mandate was to administer the York-Kenya Project, to obtain other international contracts, and to investigate the desirability of student and faculty exchanges with overseas institutions.
In 1984 the Office of International Services became York International. Its responsibilities include representing the University to government and international agencies (CIDA, Department of External Affairs, the International Division of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada, the World Bank, the United Nations) as well as lia6on with embassies and consulates of countries in which projects are going on. In addition, it monitors and assesses projects, co-ordinates visits, student and faculty exchanges between York and international institutions, provides central policy advice on international aspects of university life, promotes the use of special skills developed at York for international projects, provides contacts (with the Robarts Centre) with various Centres for Canadian Studies overseas, and encourages the business community to become involved in international educational and skills exchange programmes.

The Visual Arts Department was initially called a Programme prior to 1974 when it acquired Department status. It is the largest department within the faculty. The programme of study blends historical, critical and practical courses in two streams: art history and studio art. The latter includes courses in photography, painting, sculpture, drawing, and textiles. It offers both undergraduate and Master 's level degrees.
The Department is administered by a chairperson who has both line and staff responsibilities and is appointed by the Board of Governors on the recommendation of the Dean and the President. The programme chair plays a role in the recruitment and retention of staff, the development of curriculum and in research activities.
The chair handles the departmental budget, is the chief administrative officer, and takes the lead in setting the programme timetable. In addition, the chair acts as a liaison with the external community, and this is especially important with visual arts where outside experts and galleries are employed in the educational experience. Since 1974 the department has been served by Edward Fort Fry (1974-1975), Ken Lochhead (1975-1976), Joyce Zemans (1976-1982), Andrew Tomcik (1982-1985) and T. Whiten (1985-1988) as chair.

The York-Kenya Project was initiated by the Government of Kenya and the Government of Canada through the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). CIDA arranged for York University to administer the project. The project had three components: the establishment of a Planning and Evaluation Unit in the Kenyan Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning for which York provided a field staff; a Training Programme, through which Kenyans were educated at York to take over the Planning Unit and act as future teachers of economic planning; and a research component on particular topics proposed by the Kenyan Government, the York field staff, or the university.

York Youth Connection

The York Youth Connection began in 1974 as a summer day camp for under-privileged youth in the York University-Finch neighbourhood. Originally providing English as a Second Language, Heritage Language training and multicultural awareness for children, the summer camp evolved into a fine arts day camp that provides lessons and entertainments in the fields of dance, visual arts, theatre and music. The camp is a part of the York Community Connection.

The Vice President (External Relations and University Development) was created in 1983 as part of a re-organization of the executive responsibilities at the University upon the retirement of William Small. It was the successor body to the Vice President (Finance and Development), which itself was a successor to the Executive Vice President' s office. The financial responsibilities of the portfolio were replaced by responsibility for several university services including administrative responsibility for the Department of Communications, Physical Plant, Purchasing, Bookstores, Business Operations, Facilities Planning and Management, Ancillary Services, and Safety and Security. These responsibilities were added to the External Relations portfolio of the job which included Alumni Affairs, relations with governments and other external organizations and fund-raising. The position of Vice President (External Relations and University Development) was dissolved in 1985, with its responsibilities being split between the Vice President (External Relations) and the Vice President (Finance & Administration). George Bell served as Vice President (External Relations and University Development) and as Vice President (Finance and Development) for the duration of both posts.

The Vice President (Academic Affairs) acts as the principal interface between the central administration and the academic community at York, including the Senate, the Faculties, and certain academic support units (Centre for Support of Teaching, Department of Instructional Aid Resources, etc). The Vice President has budgetary, administrative and planning responsibility for the academic operation of the University, and is assisted by Associate Vice Presidents for Research, Faculties and Admissions & Recruitment. The Vice President (Academic Affairs) has Senate responsibilities, both as an ex-officio member and as the officer responsible for seeing that Senate legislation is carried out by faculties.
Within the faculties, the Vice President has responsibility for seeing that budgets reflect planning priorities. S/he approves academic appointments, acts as an administrative link between all Deans and the Senate, and promotes new academic endeavors. In the field of academic development, the Vice President often acts as a catalyst for new academic enterprises, particularly those involving several faculties. S/he may assist the emergence of graduate programmes or Organized Research Units, and sometimes provides of seed money. In 1974 the office of Vice President (Finance) was discontinued, with many of its functions and responsibilities being turned over to the the Vice President (Administration) and the University Vice President. Bruce Parkes served as Vice President (Finance) for the entire period of the office's existence.

The Executive Committee is the senior committee of Senate. It directs the flow of Senate business to appropriate committees, administers the process of nominating members to serve on Senate, and receives the reports of many of the other committees. Along with the Senate proper, the Executive has the power to create committees to deal with matters of general concern that are not the purview of any other Senate committee. The Committee acts as the Senate's liaison with the Board of Governors and must meet with its Executive Committee at least twice a year. The Executive also acts in the name of the Senate during the summer months. The Sub-Committee in Honorary Degrees and Ceremonials is attached to the Executive Committee.

The Theatre Arts programme was initiated in 1969, becoming the Theatre Department within the faculty with its own chair in 1974. These were essentially the same functions that the Assistant Vice President of the University had performed prior to the institution of a Vice President (Academic Services) in 1969, and Arthur C. Johnson filled both positions in turn. With the introduction of an Assistant Vice President (Academic Services) the role of Assistant Vice President of the University became more oriented towards student services.
Arthur C Johnson had come to the University in 1960 as Assistant to the President and was named Director of Campus Planning in 1961, Assistant Vice President in 1966 and Vice President (Academic Services) in 1969.

York University (Toronto, Ont.). Vice President (Employee and Student Relations)

The position of Vice-President (Employee and Student Relations) was created in 1976 as part of re-organization of the responsibilities of the University 's executive. The job gathered responsibilities of both the former University Vice President and the Vice President (Administration), to create an officer who had responsibility for labor relations, personnel services, student relations including student awards, the counselling and development functions, health services, and student societies including student government. As well, the Vice President had responsibility for administrative liaison with the colleges, and served on committees of the Board of Governors and the Senate. The position was re-named Vice-President (Finance and Employee Relations) in 1983. William Farr served as University Vice President and Vice President (Employee and Student Relations) for the entire time that the positions existed.

In 1972 the Research Administration Office was created from the former University Research Office as a clearinghouse of information on the availability of and application procedures for grants from external agencies. At the same time responsibility for it was moved from the Faculty of Graduate Studies to the Vice-President (Academic Affairs) for reporting purposes.

Safety, Security and Parking (formerly the Department of Safety and Security Services) is responsible for the operation and oversight of all parking facilities on campus and it facilitates the safe and orderly conduct of University business on a year-round basis. At the same time the office is responsible for accident investigation, Workers Compensation, inspection of hazardous conditions and wastes, pest control, radiation safety, health and safety education, indoor air quality and ergonomic assessment. York Student Security began in 1977 as a adjunct security service staffed by student volunteers. It is now a paid, unionized security service whose members participate in the Night Security Patrols, operate the Student Security Escort Service and work alongside the Parking Authority.

York University (Toronto, Ont.). Senate. Academic Policy and Planning Committee

The Academic Policy and Planning Committee (APPC) is the key committee of the Senate responsible for examining and formulating long-term and short-term academic policy. Its functions include recommending to Senate new faculties, departments, programmes, and research centres as well as recommending reviews of existing structures. In addition, it makes recommendations to the Board and the President regarding budgetary considerations for the academic function of the University, and in respect to tenure of faculty (but not of individual cases). Prior to 1980, there were several sub-committees of APPC including the Steering Sub-Committee (which acted as an executive to the APPC), a budget sub-committee, two planning sub-committees, a Non-Faculty Colleges Sub-Committee and a sub-committee on instructional aid resources. The Sub-Committee on Non-Faculty Colleges was charged with examining the academic, social and cultural roles of these Colleges and the structures necessary to make them work. The Sub-Committee' s mandate expired in 1981.
The Committee currently has two standing sub-committees: the Long Range Planning Sub-Committee which reports to APPC on long-range trends in education, the introduction of new disciplines, future social requirements, library technology, and new methods of promulgating and organizing research.
The Technical Sub-Committee is responsible for defines, obtains and analyses data and supporting documents related to proposals before APPC. APPC also has the right to establish sub-committees for particular issues.

York University (Toronto, Ont.). The Committee on Curriculum and Academic Standards (CCAS)

The Committee on Curriculum and Academic Standards (CCAS) was created in 1986 by bringing together the Committee on Curriculum Policy and Instruction (itself created in 1979 out of the Curriculum Committee), and the Committee on Examinations and Academic Standards (with the exception of the appeals function) The Committee is responsible for formulating policy and making recommendations on all matters concerning the improvement, evaluation and co-ordination of curriculum, teaching and learning in the University. It also co-ordinates and oversees all matters relating to examinations and academic standards and exercises initiative in consideration of the University’s grading practices.

The Committee on Scholarships and Student Assistance was responsible in the area of student assistance, for the awarding of all scholarships, medals, prizes and other types of awards, and had power to evaluate the terms and conditions of all such awards to insure that they met University regulations with regard to inclusiveness. The Committee was superseded by the Committee on Admissions, Recruitment and Student Services in 1979.

The Disciplinary Review Committee was struck in 1984 to consider the entire matter of non-academic discipline for university members, especially for those students who were not subject to college discipline. Its terms of reference were: to investigate those charged with responsibility for student discipline including College Masters, the President and the Office of the Provost; to establish a consistency of treatment and systematic appeal process across the varied jurisdictions in the University; and to make proposals for the establishment of a series of tribunals to appeal the decisions of disciplinary bodies and a University-wide code of non-academic conduct. While the Committee Minutes refer to it as the Disciplinary Review Committee, the final report refers to the body as 'Review Committee on Non-Academic Discipline'.

The Senate meets on the last Thursday of each month (September to June). At its first meeting it elects a Vice-Chair, who presides over the meetings in the absence of the Chair. At a regular meeting of the Senate, the Executive Committee presents nominations for officers of the body as well as nominations for the membership of the Standing Committees. The Order of Business for meetings is set down in the Senate 'Handbook', and the body adopts the rules of the House of Commons with regard to the conduct of meetings. The Chair is permitted to vote on all questions, but no member may have more than one vote. The Senate may resolve itself into a Committee of the Whole at which time the Chair of Senate shall appoint a chair to sit for the duration of the meeting of the Committee.
Statutory matters of the Senate include the creation of departments and faculties, the establishment of chairs in any of the arts and sciences, the creation of faculty councils to act as executive committees for the Senate. The Senate has power to regulate the admission of students, to determine courses of study and graduation requirements, to institute degrees and to establish rules and procedures to govern the business of the Senate. The passing of statutes requires a first reading, consideration by Committee of the Whole, and second reading. A non-statute may go through more than two of these stages in any one meeting.

The Assistant to the President acted as a communicator with academic and administrative staff, sat as secretary of several presidential committees, and took primary responsibility for writing the University Procedures Manual in the 1960s. The Research Associate was responsible for undertaking institutional research in the areas of educational development, the establishment of professional faculties at the university and related issues. The first assistant to the President was D. McCormack Smyth (1962-1963), who was succeeded by Timothy Reid (1964-1965), and Henry Best (1965-1968). Best had originally been employed as the Research Associate to the President (1964), and combined the two jobs in 1965.

The Retirement Consultation Centre was established in 1983, initially as an Advisory Board to consider retirement education and consultation for university faculty. In 1985 the Centre was established on a part-time basis, becoming full-time in 1987. In that year the Retirement consultation Centre expanded its mandate to include non-York clients. It offers personal counselling and a general education program dealing with retirement issues including pension plans, long-term financial planning, health, housing, legal matters and related social concerns tied to retirement.

The Senate Committee on Research (SCOR) is responsible for the establishment and review of policies for the development of research excellence. It explores initiatives relevant to research policy and makes recommendations on the research objectives of the University. SCOR approves the establishment and reviews the procedures for the University 's various types of research institutes and centres. The Committee insures that Senate is informed of all funds in the University that are provided for the support of research. It recommends policies governing the allocation of all research funds, and advises on policy guidelines of the University for their administration and expenditure. In addition, the Committee reviews the activities and proposals for establishment of new research institutes and centres, review the work of the Office of Research Administration and its sub-committees to insure that University policies with respect to research activity, openness and freedom are maintained.

The Curriculum Committee was established to co-ordinate and oversee curriculum development in the University, to review existing curricula and to examine and propose changes to them. It had the power to accept or reject any routine changes to programme proposals. It was charged in 1971 with power to exercise initiative with respect to policy matters involving curricula, including the specific issue of Canadian content. The committee was superseded in 1979 by the Committee on Curriculum Policy and Instruction.

The Co-ordinating Committee was established by Senate in 1972 to follow-up on the studies begun by the Joint Committee on Alternatives which had been established by the Board of Governors and the Senate to investigate York's 1972-1973 budgetary crisis and its academic implications. The Co-ordinating Committee was charged with furthering those investigations. It conducted meetings with the President concerning the budget, and established a sub-committee to deal with the computing needs of the university.

The Committee on Curriculum Policy and Instruction, successor to the Curriculum Committee, was created in 1979 to formulate policy and make recommendations on all matters concerning the improvement, evaluation, and coordination of curriculum, teaching and learning in the University. This included the examination of proposals for new degree and non-degree programmes. The Committee sets policy for and oversees the production of University calendars and fosters the rational coordination of resources for the teaching and learning goals of the university. There were several sub-committees of the Committee on Curriculum Policy and Instruction.
The Sub-Committee on Calendar Review had power to approve or reject any curricular proposal which was of a routine nature and to bring forth matters of policy recommendation to the Committee. In 1983 this Sub-Committee was re-named the Sub-Committee on Curriculum Review.
The Sub-Committee on General Education was charged with coordinating the efforts of the non-professional faculties and promoting general education at the University. The Sub-Committee on Teaching and Learning was responsible for investigating means of improving the teaching effort of the University, facilitating the exchange of ideas on instructional methods, and was to seek funds and allocate grants in support of instructional development from funds administered by the University. The Sub-Committee on Non-Degree Studies was to assume over-all responsibility for non-degree courses and programmes and to gather information about non-degree education throughout the University and in relation to the external community.
The Committee on Curriculum Policy and Instruction was absorbed by the Committee on Curriculum and Academic Standards in 1986.

This involved investigation and approval of all rules and regulations, consideration of grading practices, and reviews in other areas of assessment. It was also responsible to the Senate for all appeals of students in matters of grades and academic standing. In 1986 the Committee was absorbed by the Committee on Curriculum and Academic Standards, with the exception of its appeals mechanism which was assumed by the Senate Appeals Committee.
