Administrative history
The Faculty of Fine Arts was instituted in 1967 with programmes in the visual arts, film, music and theatre. The programmes of study combine research and practise and emphasize an interdisciplinary approach. In 1967 it was the only Faculty of Fine Arts at a Canadian university.
Within the faculty there are departments for each of the areas of study. The departments are responsible for budgeting, for policy implementation and for co-ordinating the tripartite functions of the faculty: teaching, research and creative work. In 1974 a Master 's degree was first offered in Visual Arts and by 1983 there were graduate programmes in Art History, Dance, Film & Video, Music, Theatre as well as Visual Arts.

Archives and Special Collections has copies of the minutes of the Faculty Council (1970-1991), as well as minutes of some of its committees (1975), which are housed in the Ephemera collection. These are the official minutes of these bodies to the extent that they have been prepared and distributed to members of the bodies and the University community. They may or may not be identical to records kept by the recording officers of these bodies. In addition to archival records, Archives and Special Collections has gathered other material from the Faculty of Fine Arts which is housed in the Ephemera collection. This material consists of printed material and ephemera, including announcements of performances, exhibitions, conferences, programmes and public events, calendars, exhibition catalogues, handbooks, newsletters, professional publications, programmes and reports from the several departments and art galleries (Fine Arts on Markham, IDA, McLaughlin Hall) associated with the Faculty.
