The “Bridging the Solitudes” project ([2001?]-2005) examined the racial, ethnic, cultural and financial barriers faced in post-secondary education by students from traditionally marginalized groups. Thirty students participated at York University and Seneca College during the project and regularly met during the ‘common hour’ to discuss their ongoing experiences, expectations, and aspirations for university and life.

The “Racism, Violence and Health Project” (2002-2007) was a $1.25 million study funded by the Canadian Institute for Health Research. Over 900 individuals participated in the study through surveys, in-depth interviews, two-year micro-ethnographies, annual community forums, and smaller community meetings. The goal of the project was to determine perceptions of both global and racism-related stress in the Indigenous African Nova Scotian community, the Caribbean Canadian community in Toronto, and the African immigrant community in Alberta; and to document the first voice accounts of Black men, their families, and communities about their experiences of violence (including the violence of racism). The research team comprised of Dr. Wanda Thomas Bernand (leader), Dr. Dave Este, Dr. Carl James, Dr. Akua Benjamin, Dr. Carol Amaratunga, Dr. Fred Wien, research trainees, and collaborators (including the Health Association of African Canadians, Nova Scotia Association of Black Social Workers, Victoria Road United Baptist Church, Women's Health in Women's Hands, Tropicana Community Services, Calgary African Community Association, Calgary Immigrant Aid Society, Edmonton Immigrant Association, Calgary Catholic Immigration Society, and Calgary African Caribbean Advisory Council).

Series consists of records generated in the course of Principe’s scholarly research on the subject of Italian Canadian artists. Principe researched mosaicists and sculptors working in Ontario and Quebec, especially from a workshop situated in the town of Spilimbergo in the province of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, (Walter Del Mistro, Alex von Svoboda, the Connolly family, Remo de Carli, Giovanni Gerometta, De Spirt family, and Luigi Nasato). This research coincided with an exhibition of Italian mosaics at the Royal Ontario Museum, entitled “The New Mosaic: Selections from Friuli, Italy” (2002-2003), which he helped to organize. Principe researched the Italian Canadian painter Albert Chiarandini in conjunction with celebration of the 75th anniversary of the cultural organization, the Famee Furlane held on 29 May 2007. Series consists of materials related to Madeleine Boss Lasserre’s career and interests as a music educator of children and adults in Toronto, Ontario. Most of the material was created between 1925 and 1977, while Lasserre was actively employed with the Margaret Eaton School and the Toronto Conservatory of Music. A small subset of the records were created outside of this time period. Series consists of records created and accumulated by Peter Flemington as co-founder and Head of Programming and Development of VisionTV. Vision TV was the world’s first multifaith and multicultural national television channel which went on air in September 1988. Records in this series document the transition from the Canadian Interfaith Network, preparation for the successful application to the CRTC for a television license in 1987, planning for the channel’s launch in the fall of 1988 and subsequent day-to-day operations of the channel.

Includes: minutes, briefs, memos, policy documents, correspondence; programming files; CRTC applications and submissions; promotional materials including posters, press kits, viewer guides, press releases, and clippings; and files related to external partnerships and collaborations including the development of a new channel named Wisdom (“Canada’s Body, Mind, and Spirit”), later renamed ONE.

Series consists of records related to Peter Flemington’s work with the Rosewell Group, an independent collaboration amongst four friends (Peter Flemington, Doug Barrett, Des McCalmont, and the Hon. David MacDonald) who responded to the 1983 CRTC Call for Applications for a religious multifaith television service. Initially, their work centered on exploring the options and possible initiatives for Interchurch Communications. The Rosewell Group’s work leads to the creation of the Canadian Interfaith Network (CIN) in 1984, with the Rosewell Group continuing as the research arm of CIN to assist and guide it through the application process with the CRTC. This would lead to the creation of VisionTV in the fall of 1986.

Series consists of records created and accumulated by Silverman as a result of field research conducted in Ecuador in 1978, part of her first sabbatical project as a professor at York University, to investigate class formation and economic differentiation amongst banana producers in coastal Ecuador. These records document the early stages of a long-term research project and provide a broad overview of production in Ecuador’s banana export sector in the 1960s and 1970s. These records are primarily government documents and Silverman’s field notes, worksheets and coding forms. Series consists of records created and accumulated by Silverman primarily between 1969 and 1970, when she conducted field research in Bush Lot, Guyana, for her PhD thesis entitled “Resource change and village factionalism in an East Indian community, Guyana”. The results of this research were also published in her book, Rich people and rice: factional politics in rural Guyana, 1900-1970. This ethnographic and historical research examined local-level politics and the effect of economic resources on politics in Bush Lot, an East Indian rice-farming community on the coast of Guyana. These records document Silverman’s approach to research, which included casual conversation, participant observation, attendance at political events, formal interviews, primary source research and household surveys, and her process of aggregating the resulting data, as well as providing a comprehensive history of the village of Bush Lot and its inhabitants in the early- to mid-20th century. Series consists of records pertaining to Endicott's personal education and as an educator. First home-schooled by his mother, Mary Austin, during his childhood in rural China, Endicott continued his education at Vaughan Road Collegiate Institute, Toronto in the 1940s, followed by a summer Bible seminar at Camp Minesing in Algonquin Park, Ontario. From 1945-1949, Endicott earned his BA in the modern history honours program at the University of Toronto, studying under C.B. Macpherson, Northrup Frye, and Frank Underhill among others. In the 1960s, Endicott went on to pursue a teaching degree at the Ontario College of Education while working as secondary school teacher with the South Peel Board of Education. He subsequently completed his MA (History) at the University of Toronto in 1966, and his PhD at the School of Oriental & African Studies at the University of London in 1973. Endicott taught in the history department of Atkinson College at York University for 22 years until his retirement, having spent two sabbaticals teaching in China at Sichuan University, in Chengdu.

Series consists of materials used for the creation and defence of Stephen Endicott’s doctoral thesis on British imperialism in China in the 1930s. It includes interviews conducted during his two-year stay in London and extensive documentation from both governmental and business sources. These sources reveal the intense friction between a cautious Foreign Office (Sir John Simon) and a bold Exchequer (Neville Chamberlain) over what course of action should be taken in East Asia during those volatile years and the success of the large and powerful British capitalist and financial interests (Asiatic Petroleum Company [BP/Shell Oil], Imperial Chemical Industries, Hongkong & Shanghai Banking Corporation [HSBC] et al in the China Association) in pushing a forward policy in China despite the growing displeasure of a heavily armed Japan.

Series consists of records pertaining to a project started by Endicott, Edward Hagerman and John W. (Bill) Powell in 1978. Its purpose, among other things, was to interview surviving Western airmen from the Korean War era about their knowledge of bacteriological warfare, especially the US POWs (Prisoners of War) who had made depositions about their experience to their Chinese and North Korean captors. These records include a typescript and audio recordings of the autobiography of US Army doctor Major-General Crawford W. Sams, a copy of his classified report of a controversial, clandestine raid into North Korea, and an oral interview.

Series consists of Endicott's research files pertaining to his Series 4: United States Biological Warfare. Records include textual material including photocopies of previously classified documents, correspondence, and photographs relating to United States biological warfare activities during the Korean war period 1950-1953. These materials collected over a twenty-five year period, beginning in 1976, are the product of research in the national archives and several military archives of the United States, Canada, the Peoples’ Republic of China, and interviews in the Democratic Peoples’ Republic of Korea, Japan and Britain. Based upon this research Endicott and his colleague Edward Hagerman, also of York University, collaborated to produce the book The United States Biological Warfare: Secrets from the Early Cold War and Korea (Indiana University Press, 1998) in which they conclude that the United States secretly engaged in large-scale field tests of biological weapons in Korea and China, committing an international war crime. The book has been translated into Korean in South Korea. At the time these records were donated, Endicott maintained that American authorities continue to deny biological warfare activities during the Korean War, and he believed the topic to be the most closely guarded Cold War secret of the United States government.

These files include interview transcripts, annotated photocopies of archival records (consisting of correspondence, CIA and FBI security files, Canadian Peace Congress records, World Council of Peace records, Canadian government department records, etc.); articles, clippings, chronologies, personality files, graphic material, pamphlets, project outlines, manuscript drafts, correspondence, conference papers, etc.

Series consists of Endicott’s detailed and extensive research files pertaining to his books Bienfait: The Saskatchewan miners’ struggle of ’31 (2002) and Raising the workers’ flag: The Workers’ Unity League of Canada, 1930-1936 (2012). These files include interview transcripts, annotated photocopies of archival records (consisting of correspondence, RCMP and CSIS security files, Communist International (Comintern) files, Canadian government department records, Communist Party of Canada records, etc.), articles, clippings, chronologies, personality files, graphic material, pamphlets, project outlines, manuscript drafts, etc.

Series consists of newspaper and magazine clippings, journal articles, certificates, transcripts, conference programmes, posters and notices, sheet music and flyers. These records pertain to Mandel’s academic and other career accomplishments, his teaching at Osgoode Hall Law School, his writing and the publication of his books, his political activism, as well as his personal life, including written tributes to his parents and his activities as a singer and performer of opera and Yiddish music.

Series consists of files pertaining to Mandel’s work as a political activist. These records document the nature and breadth of Mandel’s involvement with issues including prison reform, abortion rights, the US invasion of Nicaragua, Israel and Palestine, the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia, and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Mandel’s advocacy work as a lawyer and his involvement with legal cases and submissions to boards of inquiry and/or commissions are also documented in this series. Records in this series include correspondence, research materials, legal documents, newspaper clippings, press releases, speaking notes and petitions.

Series consists of correspondence sent and received by Mandel pertaining to a wide variety of topics, but it primarily concerns his professional life, including his writing, political activism and media appearances. Many files include copies of Mandel’s outgoing letters as well as incoming correspondence.

Series consists of records pertaining to Mandel’s activities during his tenure as a professor at York University’s Osgoode Hall Law School from 1974 to 2013.

Series consists of pre-publication or draft versions of writing by Mandel for academic periodicals, newspapers and magazines, conferences, public lectures and speeches, on a wide variety of legal and political topics, particularly constitutional law, prison reform, and Canadian and international politics. Included in this series are reference materials and notebooks, as well as scripts co-written with Harry J. Glasbeek for their radio program, “A taste of justice”, and scripts and transcripts pertaining to Mandel’s contributions to a 1983 CBC Radio “Ideas” program.

Series consists of Greek language newspapers, magazines and journals accumulated by George Papadatos primarily during his time in Canada and relating to his work as a journalist and editor as well as to his interest in politics and his position as an active member of the Greek Canadian community cultural and political scene. The majority of the newspapers in the series were produced by and for the Greek Canadian community in Toronto and include a number of political and satirical publications as well as ones providing local news. Series includes issues of the newspaper Metanastis (The Immigrant), owned and produced by Papadatos, as well as Ta Nea, to which he contributed articles and served as editor for a time. A number of the newspapers in the collection were published by Deca printing house (owned by Dimitrius Aivalis) who played an important role in the Toronto Greek Canadian community as printer of many publications and ephemera relating to cultural and political, anti-dictatorship, events. Series also includes a variety of publications relating to the Greek diaspora across Canada and globally, including a few English-language publications that contain articles relating to Greek politics and culture, particularly items relating to the Trojan Horse coffee house. 

Series consists of photographs of, by or collected by George Papadatos and pertain to events held by the Toronto Greek-Canadian community during the 1970s TO 1990s, such as musical performances, dances, the Toronto coffee house scene, political meetings and rallies, parades. Some photographs relating to the Trojan Horse coffee house can also be found in the scrapbook in 2014-044/001(10).
