Letter from Rev. John Stuart to James Stuart

Item is a handwritten letter from the Rev. John Stuart in Kingston, Upper Canada to his son James Stuart, personal secretary to Sir Robert Milnes, Lieutenant Govern of Lower Canada, regarding John's daughter Mary, who travelled to Montreal until James could deliver her to Elizabeth Mountain, the wife of Bishop Jacob Mountain in Quebec City. John Stuart discusses the affairs of his other children and his daughter-in-law, Mary Brooks, who was the daughter of the future governor of Massachusetts. The letter offers comments on family relationships and the status of women in the early nineteenth century.

Letter to William Martin

File consists of a handwritten letter written from a brother and sister to their father in Kent, England, describing their decision to leave Hamilton, Upper Canada, due to unrest in the colony and to escape British tyranny, and to move to Rochester in the state of New York.

Fonds consists of material that documents his career as a writer and broadcaster and, as such, includes correspondence with publishers, fan mail, research material, newspaper clippings, reviews of his work, notes, drafts and galleys related to his novels and works of non-fiction. The writing files include photocopies of his own letters written to his mother when he was an internee in England and manuscript and photocopies of letters written to Koch from Daria Hambourg and used as research material for his novel, "The Brothers Hambourg". Fonds also includes transcripts of interviews as well as written reminiscences in the form of letters from many former German internees; these letters were subsequently used as resource material for his book "Deemed Suspect: A Wartime Blunder". Fonds includes a complete set of published copies of his books. The broadcasting files contain correspondence, memos, notes and drafts of scripts, scrapbooks and other material that documents his long career with the CBC.

File consists of one issue with reference to a letter from Halifax mentioning that "while the southern provinces are impoverishing themselves by a voluntary restriction on trade, that colony is happy in the manifold increase in its inhabitants, and its advantageous situation for the fisheries; the art of shipbuilding was also considerably advanced, and they had begun to raise hemp and flax in great quantities."

Summons to Moses Holt to give evidence

File consists of a handwritten subpoena prepared by John Reid, Clerk of the Peace, to Moses Holt of William Henry to appear at the Court of Quarter Session to give evidence as a witness against Louis Ethier upon an indictment for petty larceny. -- Related documents can be found in the Sheldon and Judy Godfrey collection, 2003-060/001(06) and (08).

Certain subjects have been arranged outside the general subject organization of the prints such as "Personalities" (15 metres); "Personalities/politicians" (ca. 4 metres); "Armed forces personnel" (ca. 8 metres) largely of the World War II era, provably used in reports of missing/wounded/killed in action. As well, there are photographs of groups of servicemen, again largely World War II era. Finally, there is a group of photographs of personalities who were associated with the Toronto Telegram, predominantly from the period after Bassett bought the newspaper (post 1952). The series also includes many photographic images purchased from wire services for the purposes of illustrating national and international stories.
